Shane & Alex - Jamming and Discussing SX Electric Guitars. In this video Alex and I are playing the VTG series guitars from SX. These guitars are affordable and sound and play great. We would compare these to the Squier Classic Vibe guitars in terms of quality.

I've got two of them, a tele and a strat, I've had them now for about five years, still play like the first day, no problem. In Spain they sell them with the original Fender headstock shape, greatings from Mallorca, Spain

Bought an sx "natural" ash strat over the internet 6 years ago... took it out of the box and was shocked at how ugly it was with wood so mismatched it looked like it was made out of two orange crates glued together... figured I'd play it for a few minutes before I boxed it sent it back... still have it and love it. Lesson learned: looks and tone are two different animals.

Hey Shane! Another SX user coming out of the woodwork here! Although I have a bit of an anecdote to add. I grew up in Union, NJ where the original Rondo Music shop sat on Route 22 West (the music store that originated the SX brand) for nearly fifty years (think they opened in 1962 or 1963 and unfortunately closed in 2005 or 2006). I started playing drums and guitar at a young age and this was the main spot my dad and I shopped at for all of our gear. It was a small shop but loaded with Peavey, Marshall, Fender amps; Gibson, Peavey, Fender, Squier, Ibanez, Ovation guitars (back when you used to get a case with the guitar!); DJ PA lighting equipment; tons of sheet music and tab books; percussion/drum area; lots of DOD, Boss, Ibanez, Marshall etc pedals up front. There was no other music store of that caliber in the area until Guitar Center came in around 1997 and ultimately put them out of business. I remember when the SX guitars premiered and my head spun because of how beautiful they looked (compared to Squier Bullets etc which were in my price range). My dad and I immediately bought one of their Jazz basses; it was kind of a transparent sapphire blue with a pearl pickguard and maple fretboard. We still have that bass and I use it weekly at bar gigs. Thing is solid, sounds great, plays great. Only thing I ever changed were the pickups because the originals were a bit microphonic. I love playing that thing. In late 2005, I left the touring band I was in, sold a decent amount of touring gear, and stopped in (just before they closed down) and bought one of the butterscotch blonde Teles with a black pickguard/maple neck. That guitar inspired me and shaped the music I played for the following bunch of years. Something about it was so exciting. It was round, spanky, and fun to play. It could handle heavy fuzzed out rock, could play jazz and soft music sweetly, and I would put it up against any guitar I was using prior on tour. Once again, I did change the pickups. I turned it into an Esquire, changed the bridge pickup to a Duncan Broadcaster, added an ashtray bridge (originally came with the modern plate bridge), redid the wiring, sanded down the lacquer on the neck and fretboard etc. I’ve strung that thing up in various wild alternate tunings, beat the hell out of it at gigs; it still looks beautiful. Been playing it constantly for thirteen years now. Everyone always asks ‘What kind of Tele is that?’ as knock-off became more and more abundant after 2005. I have a habit of taping off the headstock logos on most of my guitars just to mess with people in the crowd because unfortunately I know there are people out there who judge you by the quality of your gear. If they ask, I’ll tell them. On my Squier Mustang I have a piece of green and sharpied on ‘This is a Piano.’ Which is a knod to the Kinks, but still. Anyways, I’m elated to see these SX videos that you’ve been displaying being you are a fabulous KZfaq reviewer. People really have been catching onto these over the years so it’s wonderful to see someone with lots of viewer’s respect play these beautiful guitars. Keep at it and you’ve made an old Rondo Music store/SX lover happy over here in the states :) Justin

I share what you mean about their Tele. I love Strats but decided I should have a Tele - I tried Bullet Tele and it was pretty good but wrong colour. I tried Player Tele in Lake Placid Blue - worst fret job that the Bullet but decent quality. Then I saw STL Tele for £139 in LPB - thing was like a Player but at Bullet price. Set up out of the box. I love the neck on these SX. As I get older it's easier to hold. Such a bright sound from the maple fingerboard. The stock pickups sound killer on a tube amp. Alas I broke the bridge PU when I was shielding it - but I got an IronStone pickup Alnico and it is such a great tone. Great to read about your music background - keep spreading enjoyment to your audience.

I just purchased an sx furrian that's the 3 pickup version Nashville Tele. I almost purchased the fender model but, I accidentally came across this sx guitar and at 5 times less the price than the fender I just had to try it. Wow! Very little setup or adjustments were needed. The sound, feel, and, playability of this guitar is amazing, I could not be more satisfied. The only advantage that the fender model has over the sx are the noiseless pickups and, that's all. The pickups that are in the sx are powerful and, sound Great just like single coils should. It's a no brainer, try an sx guitar before they change the price! I cannot believe they sell this guitar at this price. I am a musician for over 50yrs. and, I just cannot believe what deal this is.

Great Video! I own a SX strat and I love it. I picked mine up at a cash converters brand new for 80 Euros. Like all guitars they need a bit of setup. Mine had a small bit of fret sprout which I sorted and the Kluson tuners wore out over time so I replaced them with 18:1 Gotoh. The only "mods" I done was to add a N-Tune Tuner and I changed the White pickguard from white to pearl. Thanks for another great video!

As long as the guitar sounds and plays great, looks can be altered easily

Shane & Alex, I've really been enjoying your various SX Guitar reviews! You're completely validating my opinions, which date back to 2004, when I first found them, along with Agile Guitars. I currently own three SX Hawks-- all with different, very affordable mods. Back in '04, when I had money, I owned thirteen different models between the two brands! The Agiles are made to perfection in South Korea and are $200-$300 dollars more than the SXs. But I would take my two Agiles over most Gibsons, which cost thousands more than my Agiles. My '04 Agile- 3500, (LP clone) features an ebony fretboard with Abalone inlays, Grover tuners, a pair of killer sounding Wilkinson Alnico-5s, a 3/4 inch flame maple cap, triple-bound body, neck and headstock-- all for $350 in '04. And they aren't even much more expensive in today's dollars! You guys should check out the various Agiles, if you haven't already. Keep up the great work, I'm a subscriber now.

Shane, wasn't looking for one, but picked up a lake placid blue sx strat today - not setup! I was told stores normally do a setup on the SX guitars before being sold. Probably why they generally play well when you get them from a store. But just raw out of the box - they're like most other Chinese guitars and need fret edges smoothed, frets polished, action / truss rod / nut / pickup adjustments. Still good value though!

I have a Gibson SG and i love my SX statorcaster it has great warm tone and holds up against any mid range guitar imo. The finish on the fret ends wasn't the best but can be done easly enough without huge expense. Its the only thing i can pick at. Imo its the best value guitar but i would not buy online. I recommend seeing, Playing and feeling the guitar before buying as quality may vary as all instruments are as individaual as us really no matter who mde them. Sounds great on my 80V Valvestate Marhall amp with just a footswitch nothing more needed really.

Just for kicks I looked these up on Reverb and the shipping to get them to the states costs the same, if not more than the price they are asking for the guitar. Puts it higher in price than a Classic Vibe over here. Its crazy Classic Vibes are so much more expensive down there when they are coming out of China which is a bit closer to you than the states.

My 1st electric guitar bo't 7 years ago is/was an SX strat copy. I have accumulated too many guitars since then, most of them so called entry level. Epiphones, Squiers, Aria, Peavey, Washburn, Tone, and many more. I rotate "my inventory" and I devote 1 to 3 hours every day to playing them. I can't get enough of it. I've become really good at setup. Low action, fret levelling, all of it. I feel it's important to let you know that my SX never fails to impress me every time it turns up in my playing rotation. Folks on KZfaq speak of guitars with superior fit and feel. Well my SX is that. It has that je ne sais quois that I can't account for verbally. If my house caught fire, I would grab the SX out of the closet and go. I have a Gibson in there but it's too dam heavy and doesn't have fit and feel. I would buy two more particular SX's based upon my excellent experience but shipping is prohibitive. I'm assuming that all SX's are still as good as mine of course but it remains a brand for which I have great respect!!

Everyone here in this comment section seems to be a proud owner of an SX guitar 😂 I know I am too. I got the natural ash strat, just because it looked gorgeous and it was dirty cheap used, and now it is my main axe. I did put in a set of Texas Specials and a Graphtech nut. I must say the tall frets are great for soloing, but not so much for complex jazz chords as it requires finer finger pressure control not to press a string out of tune. But I wouldn't take a strat to a jazz gig anyway, lol. Love this guitar! 💚

Awesome guitars, I bought my first SX back in 2012, and since then I have kept all of them except for the "Liquid" model SX, which is kind of their take on the Jazzmaster, and which was awesome, but heavy and awkward to hold...whoever said that they are DISPOSABLE and "made of cheap Chinese components" are completely wrong, yes, they are inexpensive, but SO WHAT.... I''ve dug into them internally and everything is quality made on the inside too with decent soldering and wiring and great ceramic magnets, and the bodies of Alder, basswood, mahogany, and ash...my first SX tele, which is a p-90 model, has a baseball bat size neck that's beyond fantastic, and I wouldn't trade it for anything similarly priced...I love'em!! I'm so sick of SNOBZ...

Would you recommend one of these strats over the Squier affinity series Strats? Great video 👌🏼

I know this an old comment, but mainly for others, I have the SX Tele and rate it way higher than the Squier Affinity version (which I’ve owned before), I’ve heard tell it’s around on par with the Classic Vibes but I’ve not played that so I can’t comment. As for the Strat version I’m going to buy one in 2 weeks without ever playing one, I just have real confidence.

hey Shane , can I ask an unrelated-to-this-video question ? Was wondering if you've ever checked out or reviewed any of those Pratley stompboxes (or any other stompboxes , for that matter) .. any thoughts on those , or .. ? Anyway , great vid - nice sounding guitars there - cheers !

Hi Shane, I got a chance to pick up an SX standard series Strat, Do know how it compares to the Vintage Series. BTW it's left-handed as are we.

Yeah, I think they did stop for a while. Didn't see a lot around oz for a few years as well. But they seem to have been pumping them out again for the last few years.I've actually had a tele style from them that's got a Tele style headstock as well.

Hi Shane, I know this is an old video but I'm really enjoying your channel. I want to buy my first electric guitar and I'm trying to decide between an SX Strat (I've seen them in SSS and HSS configurations) at $240 or a Yamaha Pacifica 112V at $400. Both are in within my budget. I've seen you play both of them so I thought I'd ask, which would you buy as a beginner? Do you think the Alder body, Alnico V pickups and splitable humbucker is worth the extra money?

They are both nice. I think overall the SX feels like a more premium guitar in terms of the finish but the HSS option is very versatile. The Pacifica's are really great value but have more of a natural finish on the neck versus the vintage gloss of the SX. Other than that, they are pretty comparable.

Hi Shane, another great tube mate. Cheers from Bris Vegas. Can't seem to find a stockist up here for these, but I am intrigued by the teles. I have an Affinity Strat and have realised that the neck is a bit thin for my liking. Will unload it and chase a 'mustard' coloured tele down. Have a good break OS.

Same . In Brisbane too. I think Arties music in Aspley had them and Binary music in Redland bay. Maybe they can get Tele in . I am interested too. PS got a Strat and the are great

Hey great thanks Jeff. I checked in with Arties and they have limited stock but can order them in. Binary seem to have more quantity and $20 cheaper.

In the USA we get these thru rondo music out of Massachusetts! The headstocks are different from yours because of copyrights! I have two teles an sx ash and a Douglas thinline! For the money they can't be beat!
