Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 730,000 subscribers on KZfaq. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

Hey Shane... I’m a paramedic. I strongly, STRONGLY advise you to get a check up. Just to be on the safe side, head injuries are nothing to play with.. I’ve seen bad outcomes while my patients waited to be checked out. Also, your ankle needs to be looked at as well. We want you as healthy as can be and we care about you.

This made me cry just imagining the amount of fear packed into a short period of time.. my sister is very medically fragile, blind, and in a wheelchair, and we are native Californians. When i visit my in laws in Colorado with my kids....my worst fear ever is falling while walking on the ice. It is so hard. I am overweight with some minor disabilities myself, and have full body control (relatively speaking) I cannot imagine the terror Shane felt and how helpless Hannah and Liz felt in those split seconds. So glad everyone is okay. Small tip that we have learned with our wooden ramp, roofing shingles nailed to the ramp helps create grip for the wheelchair and them being black heats up in the sun melting the ice. Definitely a lot cheaper then the grip they sell. So super glad Shane is okay and super sorry for the injures that came from this. Those metal ramps really do suck and are so freaking heavy. I agree with the majority of the other comments, PLEASE get him checked out, just to be sure.. it's always better safe than sorry. I had a good friend who was having pain in his ankle/leg after he had twisted his ankle while out on a run. He said he just had a twisted ankle and he was just fine, fast forward 18 days- his leg was still bothering him & I knew something wasn't right, he was a very strong & healthy 40 year old man, why would his leg hurt when he twisted his ankle? When I told him he should go get checked out, he said that the doctors would laugh at him, & call him a wimp. He passed away from a blood clot on the 19th day after his "twisted ankle". Minor falls or accidents can turn serious. It only takes a couple of hours to go see a doctor.. My friend would still be here if he had taken my advice! I'm glad you weren't hurt more seriously though Shane, but how scary for you Hannah. Prayers for you! 🙏

I just can’t get over the fact that the Jaco- arm, which Shane almost wasn’t even going to get, saved his life. This incident alone justifies the Jaco- arm in my opinion. I am really glad that you survived Shane. All the best for you and a fast recovery. Furthermore, I’d like to say, Hannah and her mother deserve our deepest admiration for how they dealt with the situation. I have also been at Hannah’s place, and it is extremely nerve wracking and panic inducing to encounter such a situation. So, once more, very well done Hannah (and your mom as well of course). P.S.: Shane, do yourself a favor and get checked please.

@@afshinommi1682 Oh my!!! You might actually be right. Luckily in the future they'll have a permanent ramp, so this won't be a problem anymore. And as someone who is also stubborn about going to the doctor in these situations, PLEASE GO TO THE DOCTOR Shane! I may be a hypocrite in saying that, BUT you just had a 400lb wheelchair fall on top of you, and you could have broken bones or internal damage that you are unaware of (sometimes you don’t always feel pain for these things), and leaving them left unchecked could be serious and create even bigger problems.

And he is right in my opinion. We should tell the people that we love that we love them. Considering the environment I grew up in, it was just not „normal“ to show your love to someone. If you did, then all you got were people saying things like: „Haha, he is in love with her, he is in love with her“, going on for months and months. After an experience like that, you eventually stop showing love to people, which is sad.

Everyone saying why is Hannah laughing, there's a reason. If you've ever dealt with a traumatic experience you know that your body finds ways to deal with it. Some people go into shock and can't speak, some people laugh almost uncomfortably because they know how bad it could have been (I am someone who deals with things the same way), or people get angry. There's 1,000 ways you could react to trauma. She has her own way. It's obvious it isn't due to her "not taking it serious" 🙄 So glad he's okay though. Keep an eye on him for a bit. ♥️♥️

@@yanetcortez3789 That’s fantastic that your children have been there for you all along and accept all abilities. My daughter is 9 and doesn’t walk or talk. I’ve said from the beginning of this journey and far too few understand or appreciate people with special needs unless they have needs or care for someone who does. I was guilty of not understanding before my Kaitlyn arrived. I wish kids were more exposed to people with special needs in school. The earlier the better 🙂

Jesus, that is terrifying. Hannah isn’t going to let you go down any ramp without her for awhile.

It’s not about “let,” at all. Hannah doesn’t strike me as controlling. She seems pretty understanding to me.

@@punky19761 I don’t think they meant it like that. The way yall coddle Hannah and Shane is ridiculous. They’re saying she’ll be scared for him to do it by himself, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong w that comment. And since you wanna take things literal, it IS about “let.” Either she lets him, or it doesn’t happen. Period.

@@punky19761 i don’t think it was a comment regarding disability. If something really scary happened to someone you loved like they broke their legs falling down icy stairs you would be hesitant the next time they did walk down stairs “hey you okay?” “Need help” “there’s ice okay just watch for that” I think that’s more what they meant. You’re right it’s not a matter of let, but if she asked if he needed help, and he said no, she might be a little more persistent, “hey, please let me help because I’m worried”. It’s not controlling, it’s loving someone and wanting to make sure they are safe and knowing you have the ability to make something safer.
