Film by Eric Minh Swenson. Music by Sa Gee.
Shane Guffogg has been visually exploring the painting titled "Ginevra de Benci" by Leonardo da Vinci for 2 years, investigating small details of line and color that he pulls out and conceptually transfers on to canvas, to which he then responds and adds to in what Guffogg likes to call his visual conversation with Leonardo.
Guffogg began Ginevra de Benci #24 in his country studio in Central California in the spring of 2011, working on it again in November and December of 2011 before rolling it up and bringing it back to LA in January of 2012. Guffogg restretched the canvas and continued working on the painting and at that time also started what was to become Ginevra de Benci #50. Guffogg use of a glazing technique taken from the old masters in which he applies up to 80 plus layers makes for a slow build up of paint, creating subtle variations of tone and light that allows light to penetrate in through the layers and reflect back out toward the viewer, giving the illusion that light is being created from within the work.
