Shane's Re-enactment Longbow. I Make an Ash Longbow & Launch an Arrow Cam. Viking re-enactor. I never sell or give away bows - but a good friend asked me to make a re-enactment bow, a low draw weight longbow, and I set myself the challenge of meeting the exact requirements - 30lbs @ 28 inches draw. That should be easy I thought. How wrong I was! Tillering a bow has always been hard for me - but tillering to an exact draw weight took me to a whole new level. Quite a challenge for me. The bow is made of ash, fraxinus excelsior, which was growing in our wood just a few weeks ago and was taken down as part of tree thinning to give other trees space to grow. From wet wood to a longbow in just a few weeks.

Oh I am delighted for you David. I hope your new bow brings you pleasure and your club embraces you and provides a great environment in which to enjoy archery. I have found in my few, short years of novice bowmaking and archery that it is possible to find and enjoy the company of non-judgemental and supportive archers. I hope your club provides the same fellowship as I experience with the guys I shoot with. Good luck and keep me posted. Mick

Mick, great work! Something passed to me that has helped me tremendously on hitting a weight target is to only draw to intended weight from short string to finished bow. If you perfect your tiller from shortly past brace to full draw and never pull more or less than intended draw weight on the string, then you will hit weight most of the time. I also tiller to about 10 lbs over end goal draw weight. My whitewood bows sometimes lose 3-5lbs shooting in, and sometimes the tiller changes shooting in as well. If it doesn’t, the additional weight is easily scraped evenly away. These are things you probably already know. But if not, they helped me a ton. Thanks for your videos mate. Watch every one.

Thank you! Yes, on this bow I never exceeded the intended draw weight and that really helped - your comment here will I'm sure help many who read them. I found it tough because it was the first time I'd really tried and tillering is always a challenge anyway - so getting both as best as I could tested me. I stopped on this one five pounds over then tweaked it down to 30lb very gently. After shooting in, so far , so good! Thanks for a very useful reminder for all of us novices. Mick

I’d have to agree with you on your statement about tillering being the most difficult part. The worst is when you have a near perfect tiller but your chasing a certain weight and screw up the tiller in the process.

Hi Kyle, ouch I bet that hurts. I still struggle with tiller so I'd need to go for a very long walk if I got a perfect tiller then ruined it! Thanks for watching. Mick

Thanks Mike, another lovely bow to add to your bow making experience, I'm finding it very educational watching guys on all rungs of the ladder of this vast and skilled craft and like you most of them are happy to share their knowledge and experience, so I'm not far off having another go myself having failed the first time through lack of knowledge. On watching an expert shooter I'll take his advice which was for better accuracy try to keep the bow around the 50lb draw weight, also apparently a well tillered low weight bow is more effective than a more powerful bow poorly tillered.
@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Both your last comments are true - but I know more than a few who can demonstrate accuracy with bows well above 50lbs. That said, I found 40lbs an ideal weight for targets and also for early bow making. Good luck and Happy New Year.

Hi Mick, Firstly I would like to say how much I love your channel and how educational it has been to me. I was sad to see you had to stop bowmaking and archery. I am a novice as you are with a very keen interest in traditional archery, however I have never made a self bow like this. I have experience from making two or three bows out of boards (pine, and ash boards backed with carbon fibre tape). These bows were flat bows with glued on risers so are nothing like an English longbow that I would like to make. I have just felled my first ever ash stave and it is similar in diameter to the stave used in this video. It is almost perfectly straight the entire length of the stave. I hope to make an English longbow style bow from this, so with the traditional D section, somewhat similar to what you have built in this video. I am aiming for 45+ lbs at 28" but as it is my first attempt at a selfbow I will be happy with any working bow. I have a few questions I feel you could help me with: I see you don't often remove the bark from your staves when seasoning and a lot of the time leave it on the bow altogether or don't remove it until after tillering. I don't want a bow with bark on and am wondering should I remove all the bark from the stave now for the seasoning process or is this not a good idea. I have tried finding an answer online for this but haven't been able. My aim is like this bow, to get it seasoned as quickly as possible. With my preferred draw weight in mind have you any recommendations for dimensions? The stave is well over 90 inches in length now so I can really have it as long as I want, I feel like maybe a 78 inch bow would be best (76 inch nock to nock) . I also would like an idea for width and depth dimensions, I am feeling maybe a max width at the handle of 1.25 inches or should I go a small bit wider? also depth i dont really have any clue either, maybe a similar 1.25 inches and have the bow tapering out to 0.5 inches at the nocks. Finally, there are some unavoidable knots half way up the stave I am just wondering do you think I should perhaps incorporate these knots into my handle section as the bow will bend less through the handle and as such there will be less pressure on these knots, maybe helping prevent the bow from breaking because of them? Sorry to be an annoyance with this big essay but I really want to try my best to get this right. Thank you.

Love your videos. I'm always impressed with the lack of string follow you end up with your bows. The only English style I've tried so far ended up with far more than I wanted. Perhaps red oak isn't suited for the design, but the far more likely culprit is my novice attempt at tillering.
@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Timothy. Never used red oak - or any kind of oak - so I can't comment on that. This bow may end up with a little bit of string follow - possibly an inch. Yes, I know what it's like to be a novice at the tiller! I think I shall always feel humble when I stand in front of a piece of stick that I want to bend!

That is a work of art I do love it. ps grandsons bow is progressing nicely not having scales I got him to lift part full paint cans until we found one he was just capable of lifting to shoulder high it seems to be fine I am guessing about 4 Kg I will hand select some 8 mm dowel for arrows and go get some turkey feathers from a friends farm lots of wild turkeys there. not sure of how to make heads yet maybe 22lr empty shells. Giving the bow a few weeks extra drying now while I recover from knee replacement surgery.

Mike Goodlock Hi Mike. Good luck with your first bow. I still find tillering a challenge and difficult to get right. I’m totally self taught so I guess that’s made it harder. Best advice I can give is just have a go and don’t give up if it doesn’t work out first time. Work slowly and put it down if you are stuck. Take pictures of it on the tiller as it’s bent. I find shape easier to judge from a photo sometimes. You can still use an imperfectly tillered bow - so measure your success in any way that gives you confidence to make another. Good luck.

I have noticed your long bows are around 70-82 inches long what I don’t know what is you thickness and width of your bows. Going to buy my equipment today. How long do you let your wood dry before you work on it. To make a good bow that will last. Thanks for all your help.

This comes in very timely Mick, I've got a couple of ash saplings I want to harvest for bows. I may need to let them dry more slowly though, as I want something a bit heavier in draw weight. Did you leave the bark on until the end, and then just scrape it off with your pocket knife? I guess that would be a good way to "chase the ring" as they say. Cheers!
@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, good luck with your saplings. As to drying, that bow went from green to ready in a few weeks - it was harvested 17th February this year so about six weeks felling to working bow. It would easily have made a 60lbs bow so drying time need not be extended too far. I debarked it with a small knife but I have made an ash bow and left the bark on - which can look nice. On this one I simply wanted a clean-backed bow this time for Shane. If the wood is allowed to dry for a long time, the bark might pop off during tillering. Take care Michael. Mick

I like the bow. I must commend how you actually filmed first couple of minutes weeks ago and waited till today to actually publish video instead of doing each week part videos. Not that I have anything against videos in parts, it's just good to see a different approach sometimes. I also like the music, especially medieval themed one at the beginning and how you are experimenting with "quick drying technique". I don't ever use anything aside from it. Btw, it is also a cool coincidence that I am working on two ash bows myself. One is flatbow and is waiting to be fully dried (shaped and left alone -> quick drying) and other one is supposed to be warbow which I will start next week after Easter.

Thank you Harald! Do you prefer single videos rather than a series? Good luck with your two bows 👍
@haraldbearclaw1856
@haraldbearclaw1856 6 жыл бұрын
I prefer both. For example I find it interesting to wait how the bow will turn up over the weeks as it is more realistic than doing whole bow in just one day, but I also like a bit of a refreshment when you mix things up a little. For example what you did now or if you make a fast lapse video of whole process. You are a very good film maker in any case. I'll let you on a little secret. I might put some recurves on my warbow haha! There are sometimes depicted on ancient manuscripts and Mike Loades shows them in his book and documentary. Not sure if I am pointlessly messing things up but I want to experiment a little. I am never claiming historical authenticity.

Oh great, thanks for the feedback. The thing with a series is: I don't know when I start the series whether I'll succeed or not which adds bags of tension for me as I get near the end! Never recurved tips before on any bow, maybe sometime soon!

I do get a little string follow, though not much. Maybe very gentle tillering, never exceeding intended draw weight during tillering and using a profile suitable for the wood may contribute.

Im from the middle east and yew was also once native to here (now it is almost extinct due to to use for chemotherapy drugs). I the only thing i have a problem with is how can you calculate bow dimensions to the draw weight you want? Any help would be appreciated. Best regards, Rashid.
@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Rashid and greetings. My honest answer is: I don’t know. The bows I made were from a variety of woods and each was different. I never tried to pre calculate the dimensions based upon desired draw weight. With consistent and good staves, I am sure that a good bower could calculate bow dimensions based upon desired draw weight. But I can’t!! I always worked with the wood I had and attempted to achieve what I wanted - sometimes successfully, sometimes not. I am sorry Rashid that I can’t help you any more than that. Good luck and many thanks for watching my videos.

@@MickGrewcock Thanks for the reply mick, i see what you are saying, its an acquired skill that you learn from making the bows it seems. I think a good base for a lower end war bow(80-100 pounds) would probably be with an initial width of 1.5 inches and a depth slightly less than that in the handle, tapering to a half an inch width and depth at the center. Appreciate the help and hope to see more videos soon.

If the bow is created while the wood is green would that cause it to crack down the road? I have lots of Ash in my area and I have taken an immense interest in English longbows and would like to create my own. I have found your channel immensely helpful in my search for information!
@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 6 жыл бұрын
I have made bows from green wood successfully and with no failures. I use two methods. One: make the bow green, don’t bend it, allow it to dry - it will dry much more quickly than a whole stave. When about 10% moisture, tiller and finish the bow. Two: make the bow green and finish it including tillering in the green. You can get a working bow with either method but the green bow will be weaker and and have poorer performance. I have bows made each way and none have broken.

There's always damage Chris - but fortunately never (so far!) to the camera. First attempts from an 80lb hazel snapped the arrow clean in half. The second one, this time from a 100lb yew warbow, snapped the camera mount on loose. This one flew quite well but sheared the camera mount on impact. Almost there though and I've many ideas when I get to right.

dad&son gaming ‘Character Bow’ is a term sometimes used for a self bow (a bow from one piece of wood) that is of characterful appearance - usually the presence of knots, twists, bends and other features of the wood that are revealed in the making of the bow. These bows are usually harder to make than those crafted from ‘perfect’ wood. Mick
