Shang Tsung is an iconic MK villain, and while he has some unique strengths in MK1, he's not quite a boss character that you might expect him to be. Due to his complex nature, mastering Shang Tsung's abilities might take a bit of time, but thanks to our guide from Faysal, the process should go much smoother!

AN IMPORTANT NOTE FOR EVERYONE PLAYING SHANG: Old Shang's claw special and Young Shang's bed of spikes are both considered projectiles by the game, and therefore do no damage or hitstun to the opponent if they have Sub-Zero kameo with ice armor active. I found this out the hard way. Sub-Zero cameo feels like his worst matchup by far.

I've been running stryker with shang and man, that character reqlly makes shang look great. He helps shang fill the screen with tons of garbage with his grenades, gives him safe mix after his 4,1,2,1 string, gives him restands off his bnbs, and gives him REDICULOUS oki after his bnb. You can blow up wakeups with grenade oki, you're super plus, the explosion can somewhat cover up if you're going for strike or throw. Stryker honestly is am incredible kameo for shang imo.

Cool guide! Maybe I missed it in the video but you can be in young form and still get old forms extensions off of forward 4. I have an example video up. It’s f4,1, stance switch,2,1 etc. Can be done too fast or too slow but you can still get that optimal punish as young Shang.

In my experience Sub-Zero is one of his better Kameo’s. Ice armour completely removes most counter zoning, it gives him access to shape shifting with the freeze and the tackle can help him out in mid range.

What you think bout goro for shang? I just picked him up last night and cant decide in a kameo goro is so good with combos

@@HalcyonEX I’m not super familiar with Goro but he doesn’t really give him that much aside from a few pop ups, which isn’t something he really benefits off of.

Goro can make is back 1,2 safe you can combo off literally every string and you have combo potential with his low grab also shokan stomp for zoming people and smooshing them

@@HalcyonEXpersonally I use Shujinko and Lao mainly. And I’ll only use Lao if it’s a matchup where I don’t feel like Shujinko will be useful

Pick sub when you know the opponent likes to throw a lot of projectiles for zoning or chip.

Use scorpion you get a low overhead. You can also get good conversions and a 28% young shang combo 30% amplified

Yeah the rough part about that though is that once you use it once it's over. You don't need to block low after old shangs forward 3. So people just low block the kick and then stand block. Then you get blown up.

@@johnnynometer just throw it out if you can't get in, people just don't expect it. Young shang gets a viable combo as well. Also you can get out of pressure easily with scorpion to zone

Its really weird to me that no one is talking about the fact that he only has one overhead and its really slow. All you have to do is block low and they'll never hit you. All these mind games with Lao dont mean much when you can just block low.

Blocking low means chip damage and chip damage adds up.

You explain it really well. But I have to get rid of this: Shang's look has been so worsened. He looked much better in part 11. Alone these stupid Wolverine blades look so shit. Which developer had this lousy idea?
