A Secret History of American River People

A Secret History of American River People

5 жыл бұрын

In early June, we took the shantyboat to the Santa Cruz Harbor Boatyard to do some work on the hull. This requires us to launch the boat in the harbor, motor to the boat lift, and get pulled out. We spent a long long weekend repairing dings in the hull, replacing the skeg elbows, painting the hull and repairing some sun-damaged fiberglass on one side. Afterward we painted the entire hull a shiny burgundy. Good times.
The shantyboat is part of a larger project, A Secret History of American River People, a project to build a collection of personal stories of people who live and work on the river from the deck of a recreated mid-century shantyboat over a series of epic river voyages. The project examines the emerging crises facing current river communities dealing with economic displacement, gentrification, environmental degradation, and the effects of global climate change.
Thanks to Jeremiah and Benzy who helped all weekend, and to Nate, Brianna, and Jessica who helped out on the treacherous crossing.

This is so amazing, I'm on a journey in life where I really want to build all my own things, my own car/transportation, etc. And this boat really inspires me, like the tiny house movement, I plan on building one of these one day.

Great project and job on the boat. I would suggest you cut away about 4" to "6 of the side walls and run a fiberglass flashing so the deck water will naturally run off instead of soaking into the walls. It is a dream of mine to live on a boat in Lake Chatuge Hayesville, NC. I am 73 so time is running.

Wow. Nice content. Sure wish we had a river system like yours. Here in N.C. all rivers are dammed up by DICKHEAD power co. The. I CW. Is all we got. But that’s great to.

I didnt see spreader bars on the straps of the lift? Did you just strap it? I did that once on a fiberglass houseboat hull and it cracked the hull....?? too much stress on the chine?? You must have one hell of a strong hull?

Looks bleddy lovely. If you ever fancy coming over to the United Kingdom I'm all ears for tips how to make a good strong yet lightweight hull for a river shanty boat (salt water). Looking for videos of hull construction techniques hence coming across your video. Loved it. Maybe one day I should visit your part of the world as like many I'm addicted to boats.

I have drawling made up similar to yours. I’m going 24x8 with 3ft sides. I live on the Ohio River in Aurora Indiana. You came right by me. I plan to use 2x4 framing under deck with 3/4 marine grade plywood for the hull and decks. I have afew questions. How deep is your hull and what HP motor did you run? I’m thinking 25-30hp 4 stroke. With a 9.9 on my Jon boat just incase. I plan to go from Aurora IN. To my property on Mobile Bay Alabama.

@@asecrethistoryofamericanri6968 I would like that as well but first on my list would be either the Osage or Gasconade rivers. They are beautiful and still natural.
