i have a copy of that book you wrote 30 or 40 years ago. that book was a gift from my mother in law. and the begining of me getting hooked on bonsai trees..thank you peter, you are amazing.

The owner asked for a restyle. What Peter did here is exactly that. I can see in years to come this will develop nicely. Art is subjective.

Imagine the face of the owner when he comes in to collect this tree 😂 Like growing your hair out and then asking the barber to take a little off the top and you walk out back where you were a few months ago, except this is 20 years! 😆 Can't help but laugh. But I know it's necessary and better for the longer term. Just funny when you see something pruned back so much. Keep the vids coming, I love this channel

I learn so much from your conversation as you speak out loud while creating your work of art. Experience and innate sense of instinct can perhaps be learned over time, but I do believe that those who become masters of any craft have that inbred something that sets their work above others. For those not possessing such qualities, they can admire and even understand the eventual outcome, but the process of getting there lies only in the genius of such a mind that is naturally given to the understanding of what actions are necessary in order to arrive at a chosen destination. As you said, there are many ways to achieve a beautiful piece, but one has to be able to calculate the right cuts, wiring, etc. in order to achieve a satisfactory result.

The last video I watched from Herons: "I never call a tree ugly or wrong or bad" This video: "This is really ugly. There is a triple fork, it is very very ugly" I kinda liked the tree from the beginning. Guess thats why you are the master and I am a bloody beginner :D

i think this is the only video where i dont agree with him removing that much of the tree.. so much material to work with at first, and in the end just looks like any other bonsai

The comments are quite illustrative. People are timid, they're afraid to use the tree as raw material for human art. If you were to chop down a tree and saw it into logs, and then carve the logs, the same people would see nothing wrong with drastic carving on these blocks of wood. And yet when the tree is not killed, but kept alive, they're very unhappy for the tree. It seems rather backwards. This shows why a great bonsai artist like Peter Chan is so rare, even though so many people try. Bonsai cannot be done only by repeating what is natural for humans. Enjoying the end result, which is years away for this tree, is much easier. But the thought process that you have to use to get there is rather sophisticated, and you have to respect and trust some of the traditional knowledge, while also having your own creative vision. That balance is hard for most people, they either want to do it entirely their own way, or follow traditional narrowly in a boring way.

I'm surprised at the people complaining about the transformation. The tree wasn't grown right to look good as a cascade.

Honestly, I liked it both ways. I tend to like shaggy, dense looking tress as it is (just my personal preference). But the end result defiantly looks well on its way to something beautiful as well.

This is one time, I think he trimmed it back to much. I like the longer branch as a cascading tree.

Bold moves. My front would have been another 1/4 turn clockwise. You end up with half of the carving out of frame but there is good movement, and there is a space in the lobe that you can see through. It was thrilling to witness how fearlessly you tackle the subject. I really wish I could see all these trees as the mature.

The end result is typical yet beautiful.The challenge should have been giving it a cascading shape. This was taking the easy way out and a similar look like any othe bonsai. I thought the original shape was also very good one for cascade

Great job Peter! You turned that shaggy pot plant into a compact and dramatic bonsai.

I'm wondering if this could be used in a penjing? A long oval pot with the tree planted at one end overhanging a display of rocks, moss, and maybe several other small plants.

The off cuts can be used to make tiny longbows that would suit a borrower, or gnome. The trick is to have the denser dark wood on the inside.

I am rewatching this recording for a third time,. the strategy of the intervention confirms the character of the trunk, and as such it is a strong new beginning for the aesthetics of the tree. But I was wondering, would it have been an option to keep one of the branches of the trident, and use one of the earlier branches as a lead 'up', to suggest a triangle, with one heavy weight to the left? Or does a yew tree grow too slow for this? I know a yew tree grows new leaves and branches on trunks, but possibly, these would have needed too long a growth period to create such an alternative..

Interesting solution. I think I would have kept the semi-cascade and wired the branches into pads, but there are a lot of different ways to get a good result.

A shaggy dog.... Now clipped to resemble a poodle 😊. A few notches in the thick branch would have made it to cascade with the ade of raffia and thick wire. That could have been a solution.

So you can make major cuts and root pruning in winter. What kind of conditions is the tree going to be kept under while it recovers through the winter?

Can you root cuttings and airlayer well established yew bushes I have 2 hedge for we planted 41 years ago. (Nursery stock in 1/2 or 1 gallon pots) we planted along the front of the property at the sidewalk on both sides of the driveway. We groomed am trimmed back over the years. They need a major pruning and topping this year. I'd love it if I could take some we pune and start to bonsai it.

The man is a mathematician. Looking at the tree from the beginning, for me, I would think "what a mess". I'm a rookie but the point he made in the beginning that to shorten the spread of the tree would highlight the trunk and therefore make the tree look ancient hit home for me..Later, I'm sure he would remove bark and carve from the point where he cracked the tree and that would add tons of character..
