Wow! The maple at 11:00 is so nice to me. I can totally see what you were going for. Like painting, if you squint it helps your eyes see the shape, the "value" of the tree silhouette

I defoliated an oak, it was stricken badly by mildew, I treated it with anti fungal spray and removed the leaves, the 2nd crop of leaves were good, but it took so much energy, it never recovered after winter.

I have begun my first air layering on green maples. I was trying to remember where I had a surplus of moss. Other than my garden (near zero sun so I made moss juice and now instead of grass) the south side of my roof is covered in moss. I filled a five gallon bucket in minutes.

Try the Acer serrulatum or Taiwan maple it's subtropical with leaves very similar to the Japanese maple not suited to full tropical areas though.

Thanks for another great video Peter, I was just getting ready to prune my 2 largest maples, a few hundred trees now and it's getting hard to keep up with them, lots of JBP need to be shaped before they get too thick.

I'm in Texas USA, our temperatures have been over a 100° Fahrenheit for a couple weeks now and the couple maples that I have are just struggling to live. Is there a maple suited for a hot dry climate? They seem so fragile once the weather heats up. Amazing work you do!

Japanese maples dont like the heat and dry atmosphere and they need freezing temps in winter to do well.

Even in San Francisco we sometimes get hot dry weather. My friend's collection then went under shade cloth, and she watered two or three times a day when we had those conditions.

I have a very difficult nursery stock hupps Japanese maple that I could really use help with just getting into bonsai so really at a basic level want to air layer and make two out of it because it is got a long straight base really wondering how well they respond to air layering and what would be the best time of year to do it

Any general purpose insecticide will do! Dont overspray and only do it in the evening! Alternatively you can use soap solution, vaseline or just rib the blighters off with your fingers!

Peter i have a question alot of my maples this year have suffered from leaf burn and all the leafs have dried out what is the best method to do to help these trees get their leafs back?

@@peterchan3100 i live in new york. I dont have much shade cause i have soo many trees and some have to stay in the sun. I cut all the dried out leaves off and left the petiole but what can i do now to ensure the tree will bounce back. They are young japanese maples exotic ones that are maybe 6 years old. Thank u peter

The tree at 6:30, is it a grafted cultivar? You mentioned propagating the cuttings, but I have heard with grafted cultivars that it typically isn’t possible. Curious to know if there are some which it is possible even if they were grafted?

I've heard the same, like the roots aren't as strong/healthy etc. But He's done quite a few videos of cultivars that he's grown rooted cuttings from. He also has quite a few cultivar maple bonsai for sale on the website, that I'm assuming are not grafted.

Some of the conifers may tolerate shade and some like Camellia like to be grown in shade - but as a rule all plants need sunlight to grow well

First thing coming to mind would be yew, if the poison is no concern. But generally look at plants naturally growing inside forests, in understory conditions beneath the canopy of taller trees. E.g. hornbeam might be another good candidate. Even vigorous Japanese maple cultivars (or the original wild form) could do o.k., avoid red or lace leaf or dwarf varieties, though.
