That's the problem though. Who listens to people who say "don't do this, i did it!"? It's why I never tell me daughter "don't do drugs, I did that." Like any other human being, she's gonna think "why's it ok for you and not me?" instead, i let her mom be the example. Daddy did drugs, Mommy didn't, look who's productive and who's scrambling to get by even after quitting the drugs TWELVE YEARS AGO? Let her use the information to make up her own mind. Criticizing someone else for YOUR mistakes is being a hypocrite, and THAT, more than anything else, is why people won't listen.

And the recent Jokic remarks. As well as Phil Jackson asking Kobe to do less so Shaq felt like he was getting more done. He has also admitted he relied a bit too much on his natural gifts as opposed to sharpening his skills. So for me personally, cool dude and incredible talent but he gets a bit too much in his feels about certain things and lashes out negatively. Which makes me less of a fan.

Dr. Shaq once told about calling his family together for a meeting and telling his kids. "Look, you're not rich. I'm rich and you are my children." Wise beyond his years.

Derek Bell did the same when he signed for the Pirates as a free agent years ago. There was a point where Bell hadn't had a base hit all season and he wanted to leave and give the money back.

We still respected Shaq in Boston. He gave us memories and moments. People who stick around and give a show are still loved. We loved seeing him even if he wasn't exactly what may have been expected. It's like Blake was the last few years. You still love to see him on the team. He may be one of the last ones off the bench but he's still such a vital part.

That's true every player goes down at some point. Not everyone like LeBron, Curry and others can play into their twilights after the prime years are over. I think Shaq's last good years was in Phoenix. But he realized it and left the game how he wanted. I respect that.

For y’all that don’t understand he still took the money! Yes, he told them to keep it but legally and contractually speaking they had to give it to him. So he still got the money lol.

If he stayed in shape he coulda averaged 15-8 in Boston.. but at that time it was the middle of the shooting big transition.. shaq had no chance to compete with that..

y’all talking about the 1.5 clear minded . he was on the back burner of his career knew it and was a brick layer . when do people normally make decisions they regret? when they’re emotionally vulnerable such as anger or sadness 😂

I’m retired military, played every sport growing up, I’m 58 now! About ten years ago, I played pick up basketball with some younger military men at an Air Force Base near my home, and for the first time I realized I’m not getting back on defense and there was nothing I could do about it! I calked for a sub and never played full court again! I still workout and play golf, but Father Time is undefeated!

Shaq was Shaq anymore. The guy that showed up in the neighborhood to play basketball with the kids. The dude that called into radio station morning shows sending belly laughs across the country. The dude approachable in public making peoples day everywhere he went. Shaq is much bigger than current basketball skills. He touches lives around the world.

There’s grieving for fans, too. I started idolizing Shaq when I was around nine and remember viewing him as indestructible. Then, he started aging and I always thought, ‘he’s going to turn into Shaq again…’ I cried when I watched a game of his in Phoenix because I knew it was over. Love you Shaq!

The thing is that as our favorite athletes get old, we also get old. Following a career makes you reflect on your own mortality a bit. You also come to terms at some point that your life is a certain way, and whatever you accomplish, it eventually turns to dust with you and eventually you're completely forgotten. Before I leave anybody with a sense of existential dread, that doesn't mean life is meaningless. We live for our own satisfaction, for our friends and family, and every once in a while for a stranger, and for the 0.01% of us great enough to be athletes, the fans.

This man is one of the greatest human beings in the world, his accomplishments in the NBA are nothing compared to his accomplishments as a father, a son a friend, a mentor and even an idol to certain kids n adults alike. this man will never know how much good he's done to those around him.
