As great as Shaq is, the dude is full of himself and he's been full of himself his entire life. The dude just didn't have the kinesthetic feel for shooting that natural shooters do. The God holding him back excuse is just a lame attempt to keep his ego from being truly humbled.

I put more of that on his weight tbh. He was lean back in college and in his first few years in the league. According to a Reddit post, Shaq shot 52% on non-clutch free throws and 50.4% on clutch free throws, defined as those taken during a one-possession game in the 4th quarter, from 2000-2011 . This suggests that Shaq's free throw shooting was not significantly better in clutch situations. Another source notes that Shaq's career free throw percentage in the NBA Finals was 48.4%, which is still below average.

I remember not really complaining about shaqs free throw conversions as much as usual in the playoffs. That ‘06 finals run in particular comes to mind, but that could be overshadowed but wades ridiculous amount of FTs he took

The big guys with their bigger arms struggle with their free throws, Wilt, Shaq, Dwight, Deandre Jordan and Andre Drummond to name a few. It's hard to be finesse with free throws because of their bigger biceps

Critics can argue about his fitness or free throws, but Shaq belongs in the GOAT conversation. 4 Chips, 3 FMVPs and 1 MVP. His peak has to count towards his legacy. His dominance is unrivaled. He probably has 2 more chips if not for Kobe’s all time worst series performance in 2004 (up there with LeBron’s 2011) and Wade’s injury in 2005. It’s hypothetical, but goes to show his rule over the early 2000s (along with Duncan - kudos to him).

I couldn't find the 4th quarter stats from the 1995 finals so I had to exclude them but after looking at the 4th quarter of every finals game Shaq played: In 26 games played he shot over 60% from the line in 5/26 4th quarters. Some of these quarters he didn't shoot any free throws so its really 5/19 (60% is a low bar anyway but we are talking about Shaq here). In these 5 finals series he shot 161/340 from the line which is 47.35%, in the 4th quarters he shot 51/108 which is 47.2%. So he actually got worse at shooting free throws in the 4th. These are the free throw tallies if you were curious: Pacers 2000: (0-1 , 9-16 , 1-7 , 6-11 , 0-0 , 1-7) 76ers 2001: (1-6 , 0-0 , 0-0 , 0-0 , 3-6) Nets 2002: (8-16 , 2-2 , 3-6 , 4-5) Pistons 2004: (0-0 , 1-1 , 0-2 , 3-6 , 3-4) Mavericks 2006: (1-2 , 0-0 , 2-2 , 2-4 , 1-4 , 0-0)

From Physic standpoint, taller people need a higher angel to hit the free throws. Its easier for smaller people to hit the free throw, that's why most of the best free throw shooter have the hight like JJ, he was one of the best ft shooter in Top 10.

The 3 point line was introduced until 1979 and Shaq was drafted in 1992. Bigs shooting 3s was not the norm. Now it is but that is mainly because of European players.
