Sharing WiFi using TpLink Travel Router TL-WR902AC
This method works in Hotels and on ships etc. I am not condoning any breach of contract that you may have agreed with the provider and I take no responsibility for your actions in this respect. It is your responsibility to check the small print.
We shared our WiFi to multiple devices with only one paid plan. This is currently possible with most, but not all android devices. It is not possible to do via IOS devices without a WiFi router.
When we moved about, we took the router with us connected to a power brick. Occasionally it was necessary to go through the quick set up (15 seconds) to select the strongest signal when moving to another location.

Hi! Do I need to make any settings so that the MAC addresses of the devices connected to WR902AC are not visible? Is it not necessary to set MAC address cloning in the settings?

Hi. Nice review. If you spend a bit more money you can get a better product with the GL.iNet GL-MT3000 (Beryl AX) Pocket-Sized Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Travel Gigabit Router. I have this travel router and it uses OpenWrt with the Luci front end for a nice gui experience. Cheers! ❤️👍🏻😊

How many meters is the wifi available around this router. Just in the room?

I'd say about 40 meters in free space, of course the distance will be considerably reduced by walls, especially if they are metallic.

As I am reading on some of the ships prohibited list, routers are becoming one of them. Are you concerned that they would confiscate your router once you are on board?

I haven’t seen that, but the router is tiny and I doubt it would be seen. At wrist all they could do is take it and give it back at end of cruise. Android phones natively let you share the connection anyway. are they going to confiscate all android phones?

I am wondering about a couple of things...Once we set the router up and assuming that it stays in the stateroom for the duration, what about one single device that we might be carrying around on the ship? Will that device connect and "bump" the router off? Note: I plan to buy 2 devices/1 person, even with the travel router. That way, I am thinking that I can stay connected, out of the stateroom, with one of the phones. Should I do the initial setup of the travel router using my laptop, instead of using one of my other devices, such as the phone?

You can only have the one device on one plan on MSC as it binds to the first MAC address you connect with. You need a device plan for each device. On P&O it’s different connecting a second device turns the first off, well a screen comes up asking you to do that. You can use the same plan switch between devices. The beauty of the travel router is that as long as you are in range you can connect multiple devices on the one plan. We often carry ours arround the ship powered by a USB battery bank attached by the other half’s hair bands 😅

@@CaptainKevinandCarol So, We do have a USB battery bank and could follow that scheme. Back to the set-up on the TP-Link...You said do not go into the Client Settings screen? I already have my 2.4 and 5GHz channel names and passwords set-up from previous use (not on a ship). So, after selecting the strongest of the ships WI-FI channels, go to the browser and access the login screen for the ship's Internet? In my case it will be RC's VOOM. Type in my credentials and wah-lah? Now, for any other device I want to connect, I will choose the appropriate 2.4 or 5GHz channel on my travel router?

Wouldn't it be better to first sign in to the ship's Wi-Fi with a phone and then clone the MAC of the phone to the router, and then login to the router with the phone? This way you could turn the router off when you are not in the room and use the phone elsewhere on the ship. As long as the ship's connection does not see the same MAC twice I don't think there would be a problem.

Or just use a power bank and bring the router with you everywhere 👍
