I created this lesson because of a little discussion that went on quite a while ago in the comment section of one of my videos. Could I convince you after watching this video? If not, you can also do a little experiment. Re create the situation and go ten times for the nine ball into the side, and ten times into the corner pocket. Track down how many attempts were successful and compare the results. If you did, I would love to hear your results here in the comment section. One important note: The closer the nine ball is located to the center of the table, the more likely it is to play position for the side pocket. The closer the nine ball is to the short rail, the more likely you are to go for the corner.

You have an excellent point, Sharivari. The side pocket is so hard to control that i forced myself to become a sports expert at it, in my own limitations, to be more effective as a player! I trained and trained to get as good as i could since i didn’t want to get stuck when left with no option other than that. You should do more of “avoid this” videos! Like the combo, banks, kicks and etc that aren’t used by pros when playing a serious game. Great point you brought out! Always a great video whenever you publish!

Good point . However in my opinion , no one would choose the side pocket . There are a couple of reasons : 1 - if you are just practicing you can play any way you want it does not matter but in a match it is hard to completely avoid the pressure which would make you deliver the cue slightly faster and you do not even realize that . 2 - in most of the case people use LD or CF shaft which definitely makes the cue ball travel further than the ordinary one so they would more likely end up shooting into the corner pocket . Correct me if I am wrong .
@6mdm
@6mdm 3 жыл бұрын
@@linhanhdang8835 My studies have shown the speed of stroke is the key factor in distance of cueball travel, not high or low deflection. My mechanical device that allows same speed of stroke showed very little difference between lowest deflection and high deflection cues. I believe the different contact point on object because of low deflection makes people think the cueball runs more. With outside english low Deflection causes a thinner hit allowing more speed to remain on the cueball. This accounts for players saying they can “hold” the cueball with low D on inside english shots ( this causes a a precise thicker hit than expected with a high deflection cue) which in turn, takes more energy from the cueball. I demonstrated this to a top world class player and he said his perception of the dynamics were changed forever. Thank you for your openness to information. It will make you a great player if you aren’t already.

In my experience, the OB1+ Classic shaft (12.75mm) and the Predator 314-3 (12.75mm) have similar deflection. The Predator Revo shaft has slightly less deflection and feels weird upon impact with the cue ball. The Cuetec Cynergy Carbon Fiber (12.5mm) has slightly MORE deflection than the OB1+ and Predator 314 but feels just like a maple shaft when I hit the shot. I currently play with the Cuetec Cynergy with the Tiger Sniper tip.

The advantage of CF from my perspective is not deflection, it’s that it requires zero maintenance, and never warps. I have a revo 12.9, love it, cue for life.
@6mdm
@6mdm 3 жыл бұрын
@@mkyhou1160 the 11.8 hits even better. It allows a 12-15 inch bridge , aim object ball as though you are putting zero english on it, then pivot ( backhand only) with a ton of inside spin and magic! I noticed the 12.8 deflects doing this and causes an over cut at higher speeds. A shorter bridge can help with higher speed shots if using revo 12.4 ( or is it 12.8? . I forget. Too many shafts!

Yep, very important concept, thx! Several thoughts: This concept is also especially valuable when we’ve got BIH and the next OB is close to the side pocket. It seems so obvious (“correct”) to shoot the ball in the side BUT there are many easy and much safer position lines available by shooting it to a corner pocket. (Have read that pro players choose the corner pockets for shape, when the table is congested early in a rack - but then more likely use the side pockets when the table is very open. This works for pro level players who can play pinpoint precision to get that pure line on any average side pocket shot.). But your example is no way an “average” side pocket shot (!) and seems pro player would always choose your position play as it has that much larger position window.

Hi Shari. My wife and I really have learned quite a lot from your well-thoughout tutorials. We thank you and commend you for your excellent content. One challenge we both face that I'm not finding much information/videos about is shooting techniques for when balls are touching/kissing: cue kissing one or more object balls, etc. I recall you did a video that touched on this topic, about how to properly split up groups of 2 kissing object balls but we both think a tutorial video covering this topic more broadly would be very helpful to many of us.

The distance from the object ball to the pocket is not talked about here. Do you know how many times I’ve seen great players rattle a long shot to a corner? Sometimes you play a little harder position to get a much easier shot. I set this up and was on the nine to the side about 19 of twenty shots,( first shot). 15 of twenty going down and up for the corner. I think nerves could be a factor also. I hit too soft going for corner position. As I feel pressure, I slow roll balls and have had great success. I really believe in playing the score and keeping in touch with your emotions during major match play.

Absolutely. I was one of the people that questioned the going for position to get a shot in the corner pocket compared to the side pocket. To me, getting a good shot in the side pocket was dead simple. Getting position and a good shot to the corner was not difficult, but to me there are more problems getting position to the corner than the side. Getting position to the side was super simple Over running position to the side pocket would require a player to really not be paying attention. There is very little precise speed control needed, so I am not sure why anyone would seriously overrun this shot if they were going for the side pocket. In the end run it is personal preference and how someone feels more comfortable. I have no problem with getting position to the corner, but to say getting position to the side pocket is harder or the shot is harder is just not true for many of us. You mentioned you got easy position to the side pocket 19 out of 20 times. I have done this same shot at least 1000 times and probably got position and made the shot in the pocket 99% of the time. Getting position and making the shot to the corner about 85% of the time. There really is no right or wrong, it is what works for you. But shooting for position for a shot in the side is the easiest for me.

at about the 9 minute mark you shoot really hard, just to get shape into the corner pocket using two rails. I've noticed that a lot of people will miss shots when shooting hard, especially when shooting into the corner pockets and the balls are often rejected, even sometimes ejected from the pocket even though you did not hit the side rail or the inside of the pocket cushions. I agree that most of the time you want to get position for the corner pockets... but you should have left yourself a better angle on the 8-ball to get out to the center of the table easier. From that position, I would simply roll forward and shoot to the side pocket. The harder you have to hit the cue ball to get shape, the more likely you will miss the ball you are currently shooting.

After watching hundreds of hours of Efren Bata Reyes during the lockdown I concluded that part of his magic includes shots to the side pockets that most of the other pro players cannot or do not play. On the other hand, if Efren has a weakness, it appears to be long cut shots down the rail. Personally I prefer shooting into a corner pocket; guess I need to practice more side pocket shots.

Good lesson, thanks. But, I disagree with choosing to play the 7 ball in the corner in the second example. In your demonstration, you played a one rail position, cutting across the position zone, close to the 7, when there was a natural angle to play it two rails with some outside spin. You would risk over-running this position if you hit it too hard, but it's a more natural shot than using inside spin as you did and potentially leaving a back-cut or under hitting and leaving a long shot. This is just my preference of course.

@@jamesdavis8731 hmm.. interesting that shooting into a smaller pocket across twice the amount of distance would be the easier shot for anyone. Plus the margin for error on position is about a balls width.. you fall outside of that then suddenly you have a pretty difficult shot in the side. @@myrontedrow3242 he is wrong. For many of us getting good position and making the shot in the side pocket is EASIER than trying to get position to sink the ball in the corner. For me, the side pocket position is much easier. The only way to get into any serious trouble is to seriously over hit the set up shot. It comes down to personal preference. I think a lot of players struggle with side pocket shots, and Sharivari might be one of them. I play a lot here in the Philippines and most Filipinos have no issues with side pockets at all. A friend of mine, from the UK, plays position for many side pocket shots and it seems to open the game for him. If you are good at hitting shots in six pockets, it is better than being good at hitting shots in four pockets. I struggled for years with many side pocket shots. Then after getting my ass kicked by him, and many other Filipinos, I decided to really work on side pocket shots. It has made me a much better player. So for many of us getting position for the side pocket is easy, or easier than position for the corner. Both should be practiced though.
