Shark spotting: how a drone app is helping to keep Sydney's surfers safe in the water

Jason Iggleden, the creator of a new app called Drone Shark, talks to Guardian Australia about why he decided to start simultaneously filming surfers on Sydney's eastern beaches while monitoring for sharks.
The app, which was designed for surfers who want footage of themselves catching waves, is a 'first in the world', says Iggleden. It also reports on surf spots and conditions, and provides drone footage of predators lurking off the beach.
Iggleden believes drones are a more effective and ecological way of keeping surfers and swimmers safe than shark nets, drumlines and helicopter patrols.
If Iggleden spots a shark, he contacts lifeguards, or if it's urgent, uses his own megaphone to shout out to surfers.

People always say not to worry because it’s so rare but I think most surfers would appreciate this kind of peace of mind. I know I would here in central california

Great use of technology to make surfing safer. I believe it’s same military naval aerial strategy to counter stealth submarine warfare.

I can just see a further development of this technology leading to some sort of 'strike' against the shark to ward it off.

Wow a shark spotted in the water who would have guessed , With the ever increasing pressure on oceans and the plundering of stock no wonder they are coming in close to eat. The 1000's of sharks with towles sitting on the beach do far more damage than the one in the water.
