You can tell she came in wanting to be taken seriously and because her ideas were not something they’d personally use they tried to discredit her until she brought up figures. And then when it came to negotiating on the second deal she was rightfully confident because she’s not some first time entrepreneur she’s already a proven success, so don’t insult her by forcing her into a crazy deal like that. Capo reportedly did sales of $70 million last year so James obviously knows his business and the fact that he had his company appraised by experts is also in his favour. He did everything right, The Sharks were just too high on themselves and did like that they had someone in the Tank not intimidated by them and would not allow himself to devalue his company for their investment and endorsement. Well done James. He will probably end up more wealthy than any of them.

I agree with the wine guy. They discounted the value of his company way too low. It was an insult. If they think they they could make "hundreds of millions" from the IP and the patents, then they should be happy with his offer. The reason they were so disappointed and upset is because THEY lost so much by him walking away. And if they were SO disappointed, then it means that they were way too greedy in their offer. Maybe this guy doesn't know how to negotiate and bring them closer to his offer, but he sure know when to say no.

I disagree. I'm glad his wine company is doing well, and it's very likely due to his patent IP. But I still think the sharks are correct. I think they would have made a *LOT* more licensing that patent to other companies across different sectors. THAT would have revolutionized the wine industry, and brought in _significantly_ more money. If his wine was good enough to stand on it's own, it would continue to grow. If it's just a generic wine in a convenient packaging, people are buying the packaging. If people are buying the packaging, the packaging is where the money is at.

But it also got me thinking: How can a 5M/year not have money to expand and how can only 200k help?

That wino was so annoying. He ended up selling his business. His idea was novel, but now there’s several similar cups of wine available that are much cheaper and taste better. His brand of wine never received good reviews. I believe someone called it “stale look-aid”. He sold it for $5.9 million, which is good, but he could’ve made tens of millions if he’d partnered with the sharks. He called the Samuel Adams founder who would’ve given him the money if he believed in it. He only came on the show for publicity, he tried to look smart but ended up looking like an arrogant fool.

Just so everyone is clear, Kevin is completely wrong about Copa’s business. He tried to take Zip’s wine and make it into a packaging company (exactly what Kevin wanted) and it failed. Meanwhile, Copa was acquired for 6m. This guy had the right idea all along. If he were to have separated the IP from the business, any stakeholders in the IP business would have a conflict of interest with stakeholders in the copa business. By selling the packaging to other wineries, copa loses what differentiates it from every other wine on the shelf.
@moondoggie87tarot70

The wine company was worth Peanuts compared to what he would have made licensing out the packaging to major brands. It's the difference between starting a small niche toothpaste brand and selling Crest and Colgate and every other major toothpaste brand in the world the rights to put their toothpaste in your tubes. You get paid for every tube they sell. He made 6 million when he could have made 60 million.

If you really think about it, his brand works because of the patent. I don't think his brand would have had that increase in sales if the conveniency of it was available elsewhere. So by selling the patent, he would be dealing a considerable blow to Copa de Vino. So I can see where he came from. But refusing a deal with 3 sharks in partnership? That was wild.
