it costs about a quarter of a MILLION dollars to graduate parsons. i finished in the 80s and went on to a very successful career, but most of my classmates either dropped out, or finished and ended up working mundane retail jobs. and while it was always an expensive school i made enough to pay back my loans and live very comfortably. truth be told, most students today won't get jobs in design and if their parents aren't rich they will spend their lives trying to pay off an education that was completely useless. it's only worth it if you are completely dedicated and you're good enough. unfortunately most of the students who are there aren't.

@@sharonyeunkim i was an art director specializing in magazine publishing. i worked for 19 years until i had my first child. fashion is obviously very different, but there is one similarity. they are very youth oriented, and you can only be young and hot ...until you're not. good luck to you in your pursuits!

ive learned this myself and i’ll leave it here for all of you. these problems are problems with any industry. they are universal. if you are interesting in theater for example you will do research and talk to people who are theater grads and get data from them, and then conclude that it isn’t so profitable etc and you should find something else to do. the thing is that you didn’t research and invest enough time to know if fashion would be the same. there is stiff competition in every industry, undoubtedly. you would think that you could “play it safe” and become a lawyer or doctor to make good money etc but the system has ways of weeding you out as well. realize also that everyone else who learned what you just learned will also be thinking “ok i’ll play it safe” and go into law school as well. making competition for law school even stiffer. you will never find an industry that has jobs lined up that either don’t suck like hell or doesn’t pay anything at all. in reality the world is tough, but you are strong enough to make it. the “dream” whatever it may be can be accomplished, but you are right to think it will require some time and passion. patience people. no one knows what they are doing after graduation. your parents don’t know what they are doing either. after highschool it’s all up for grabs. open track. no more milestones unless you say there are. it’s marriage and childbirth and death. make the most of it. do something for a few years and see the results first before you quit on it, especially if you love it. you will only regret what you didn’t do, not what you did. patience is why people don’t succeed in an industry. you have to fail a lot, and everyone is looking to be an overnight success. if you want the fashion industry, make cloths, put out content, build a community, get offers and jobs that way. you have to be proactive in any industry, no exceptions. these realities about fashion are universal.
@sharonyeunkim
@sharonyeunkim 3 жыл бұрын
agreed 1000%! You must be proactive in any industry and I am not denying that. If you don't work hard forget about "making it anywhere" Again this was MY personal experience in fashion and it wasn't worth it for me considering my objectives and long-term goals. But I would not be surprised if it was easily worth it to others. It's all about preference, individual character and circumstances. Thanks for your insightful comment. This was needed!

Good for you for knowing yourself and what's best for you. I'm sure you will do great at whatever comes next. I went to Parsons when I was 18 and I always wish I had taken a year or 2 before applying. When I was there a lot of Parsons students were over 25 and already had experience or a direction. It's not uncommon to be in your 30s. No question the school and its demands are rough, but if you make it after 4 years you're going straight to the front of the line for those jobs.

Thank you for this! I personally went to parsons for fashion design (graduated year 2014) and only because I had great professors that trusted to do my own thing that I survived... and actually had a somewhat thriving brand after! But then I decided to work more on the business retail side of fashion. But so many of my classmates ended up quitting fashion or doing something not related to design in the industry. I feel like a big misconception incoming students (including myself) have about fashion is that the best way to participate in the industry is as a designer and that is so far from the truth!

sharon yeun kim good. I’m with Lane Crawford Joyce Group in Hong Kong working on sustainability and corporate responsibility, and I got my “in” at that company because my brand was stocked there before. I have to say personal connections and “unintentional networking” helped my career a lot. I mean, given the current public health situation and political situation in hk retail is obviously affected. But other than that I think for my own career I enjoy being in a more curatorial and consultancy role rather than purely design. For now at least! Hope your career - whatever you are pursuing is going well!

if you were struggling with the workload at a school no one has ever heard of, why would you transfer to parsons? the amount of work, not to mention stress that they throw at you *IS* the education! they run you into the ground because that is the best way to prepare you for the job, whatever it is. if you were unable to keep up with the course load at your previous school there is no way you will be able to handle the concentration camp that is parsons.

Let me keep it real with you high school students. Be very careful with going to school for fashion design. Okay, go to school for a more well rounded degree that can get you a good job after graduation. Look at what the coronavirus pandemic has done to many industries people are jobless. You need income to live out your dreams. Fashion design school will not give you talent that is something you’re born with, there’s plenty of free sources on KZfaq on how to sew, pattern making, 3D fashion (Clo3D) etc or a local studio class. Fashion design students post graduation are BROKE.. read that again, B R O K E. Be very strategic.
