I think ending of the show makes perfect sense. It's surprising but when you think of it you would realise it was hinted throughout all episodes. And the character was portrayed so well you understand where it all came from. Also, about green color. I'm pretty sure it symbolizes toxicity and alludes to poison. Especially since some of these vibrant green pigments that were used for wallpapers in the past were very toxic(like Scheele's green).

I felt that way about pink. The medicine in the blue bottle was pink and Adorable/Amma wore a lot of both

(NO SPOILERS 💜) from the perspective of someone who watched the show without reading the book, I still thought it made perfect sense! the ending didn't seem to come out of nowhere to me at all (and now that I've watched it twice, I've noticed even more hints peppered all throughout the narrative, which is amazing!). my only issue with the ending was that it ended! 😂 I was so absorbed, I wanted it to go on for so much longer

That's so interesting to hear your thoughts about the color green and the wallpaper. I had no idea about any of that and I kind of want to go back and watch the show again now! I agree with you that the show was better than the book and I also agree that the ending was abrupt. I think that the tiny additional scene that ran during the credits helped a bit, but I also found myself wondering if people who hadn't read the book would grasp what really happened at the end. I loved seeing the dollhouse and all of the tiny details!

Very interesting to get your thoughts on book and dramatization, Helene. It sounds like this is an example of a story being successfully translated from one medium to another. I was in high school in the mid or late 70's when Irwin Shaw's excellent "Rich Man, Poor Man" was made into a multi-part television production and that may have been when the term "mini-series was first used. I've read about how the movie version of Virginia Woolf's novel "Orlando" is an exceptionally good example of a novel being dramatized and being true to the original story. ---You mentioned Led Zeppelin in your video and in my You Tube "up next" column is a video about the American zeppelin Shenandoah!

I loved the HBO show so much that I listened to audiobook right away after show ended. I was surprised to find that I was annoyed by the book. The little sister was way more whiny and it didn't help who read the book really did an annoying voice for her. I actually would only give the book a 3 out of 5 where I would give the show 5 out of 5. It bothers me how we as a culture think that women are innocent and nice all of the time. I am so grateful that Gillian Flynn has the insight to challenge this misconception and brings to light the evilness that hides in some women.

Without spoiling anything, we should tell people to watch until the end of the end credits. You get to see the summary of the murders in a few quick pace clips. Sounds creepy but it was perfectly done. You see just enough to understand what happened. Jean-Marc Vallée is a genious!!

I think you did a great review. One thing that I thought added to the creepy factor was when Camille was driving around the town it seemed like a ghost town. The only other people on the streets where these creepy rollerskating kids and the Chief of Police. One thing I would like to comment about is that the show seems to allude to the fact that the Chief and Allen may have known something Adora was doing was not quite right, but I didn't get that feeling in the book.

Having just see the TV series, I would like to know more details about the ending. What did they skip about the acts of Ema and what happens after Camile figured it out?

Yes I would like this explanation as well please. I just finished the series, & started searching KZfaq because I rewatched those flash scenes over & over on HBO Max & even tried pausing to no avail. You’re comment is what I was going to ask for.

I have such mixed feelings about reading this book! I didn't have any interest in reading it for years but then when I heard a TV show was being done by HBO, I got curious about it. I currently have it on hold from the library and was planning on reading the book and then watching the series. I loved the experience of reading then watching Big Little Lies and was hoping for a similar experience of contrasting a good book and a good TV series. I'm still not sure if I want to read this book though... I don't need any help feeling depressed... it's something I battle already. Maybe I'll break my rule in this case and watch the adaptation without reading the book.

Exactly. Whose life is so wonderful and relentlessly happy that they need to go looking for depressing and anxiety-ridden books? How can a book or TV show about the murders of young girls or women be appealing to anyone, especially women? Isn't there enough hate and cruelty against women and animals in reality? Why make up stories about it for "entertainment purposes"? I feel sick just thinking about it.

I also really loved the show. The only person I think I imagined differently was Richard. He didn’t look like I thought he would and he was a lot more serious and somewhat mean. Him and Camille didn’t feel as close and flirty as they were in the book.

Read the book yesterday and watched the show today…I will always say books are ALWAYS SOO MUCH BETTER. Too much change in the show, I think the book was amazing a bit slow in the beginning but still way better then the show. (Personal opinion)

when I read th book, I listened as I read along, and the reader really aged down Amma when she read her dialogue, which made me kind of resent the character even when she was being nice, but Amma in the show was incredible! her performance was outstanding, and she really made the show so much more enjoyable for me

Loved the show, but decided not to read the book bc it was so dark throughout the entire story. However, I work in a library, and it came across my desk so I did read the end and was very glad I did. I discovered some details that the abrupt ending of the tv series didn’t include.

One of few drama series that I’ve watched more tan once. I can’t fully indetify with Camille’s upbringing(the series was perfect, just my childhood was different). But I’ve struggled with a lot of her problems .. Honestly SPOILER? • all those flashbacks to the mental hospital and her roommate... wow. I was in shock.. I haven’t felt these emotions in.. well I can’t honestly even remember.

I think part of the point of the pig slaughterhouse scene in the book was alluding to Amma's sadistic character. Camille follows her there and observes how Amma seems to enjoy watching the pigs being treated poorly and nearing death. I haven't watched the full tv series yet but I definitely had feelings that Amma was a potential suspect.

The show is definitely better than the book, more crisp, just may be except the ending. It was very blunt and indiscernible for people who haven't read the book.

I had planned to read Sharp Objects but thankfully watched your video first to warn me of the animal cruelty. I'm not interested in reading it now. I remember the animal cruelty in her book Dark Places and don't want to endure written scenes of violence to animals again. Why must she always write about cruelty to animals? Ugghh! Thanks for your video, Helene!

I don't know how any book with animal cruelty in it could earn 4 out of 5 stars, I also find it pointless to read or write a depressing, claustrophobic book, but somehow you did manage to make it sound not bad. :) I won't read it, though, I can't stand cruelty to animals. Would rather read something uplifting, if I could find it.

You won't read it because of cruelty to animals? How about the fact that the book is revolved around murder of human girls? Never mind that, right? Let me guess, you are a vegan. You know that this is all fiction right? So of course it can earn a 4 out of 5 stars. Don't be a pansy.

the descriptions are very brief even though they are vivid. i feel very depressed when i read about animal cruelty, but i was able to get through it because the perspective is one of empathy. its a couple paragraphs about pigs at a slaughterhouse. of course its upsetting, but since the main character is sickended and saddened by it, it made it easier to read.
