1. Use Note Cards because they give you something physical to hold and study 2. Take Active Breaks - Get up and move around or do some physical activity 3. Relate what you're learning to real life experiences, we prefer concrete evidence or real life examples 4. Study with others 5. Keep Hands or feet busy while studying 6. Be active while studying eg study while doing cardio at the gym or on a walk or chew gum while studying 7. Teach what you've learnt 8. Act or Trace our shapes

So great you're addressing this topic. Schools in general absolutely do NOT consider different learning styles effectively.

Exactly!! Trying to bring more awareness to this. Even as adults we still need to learn new information, and it helps to know how we learn best. Using a balance board with students, especially the younger ones was a game changer.

I’m a former ‘gifted’ student who was never taught how to study and the different learning styles. Due to my disability it’s hard to learn how to study unless those answers were given directly to me. I relied on memory alone during school. I’m going back to study since I didn’t do well at university and hopefully this will help me. I’m a primary kinaesthetic learner and a secondary visual learner.
@SharpCookie

Yes, I can completely relate. Most of us were never taught how to study, and it really impacted how we did in school. Be sure to also check out the visual learner video, so you can combine both styles. Good luck with your studies!!

I’m a now cognitive neuroscientist and a former audio engineer I can tell you right now you’re on the right path and don’t lose faith. I was a gifted student too and not put in the right programs and had a major affect on my reality. It sucks but we have to adapt. You are brilliant. Even posting this you are bold. KEEP GOING. I PROMISE YOU MORE THERE IS MORE. I’m also designing a clothing line specific to kinesthetic learners. This “disability” has taken me to heights most humans can never experience. Embrace your oddities. I love you. -Lucy

You're so welcome!! You sound like a wonderful parent who is doing everything you can! The most important thing you can do now is talk to him about kinesthetic learning. Use that language and explain to him what it means. You can even have him watch the video with you. It's amazing how much progress can be made when kids start to understand themselves on a deeper level, and they have words to describe it or even google it on their own and learn more about it. Self awareness is so critical. You can even explain to him the other types of learning so that he has a greater appreciation for how different people absorb information in different ways.

I keep denying that I'm a kinesthetic learner because public school literally gives us no chance at using our learning style. Then I realize that my best playing test in band I practiced while I was pacing and not looking at the music. My best psychology test I've taken had an experiement done to illustrate one of the vocabulary words for that unit. I learn pretty effectively by reading a textbook, but it's always better when I apply it.

Have always thought that I am a visual learner. But then I took a learning style quiz given by my lecturer and was surprised to find myself kinesthetic. I tried to watch your video and just realized I have been doing exactly the same as the tips you've given except for the note cards. But one of the weird thing is I'm quite weak when it comes to handcrafting (art, cooking)

We had to watch this for school and i just came here to say you called me OUT. Like I saw the option and googled it and went "oh yeah that kinda sounds like me." And then you came for my neck with the fidgeting bit lmao. You brought that up while i was twirling a pen through my fingers and I just sat there like 0-0. I really appreciate the study tips. Most of these could be because I have adhd but I'm sure it works both ways.

9:16 Awesome Content 🎉 Get a tutor on video call, like zoom, to help verbally explain the study material. And recite the study material to your tutor as if you were teaching it to them. Create a scenario about and enact a mini-skit about your study materials. For example, that mergers and acquisitions… You can act as if you’re in a conference room, arguing over the details of the merger. You can even make it a KZfaq video! Journey method - take a walk/route and go over your notes via reading or listening. Then repeat by specifically walking the route the same way and reading/listening to your notes at the same synchronized timing. Use prompts/landmarks to help memorize concepts/definition of your study material. Thank you so much! ❤

I've worked with kids that have ADHD. It takes some patience and adaptability. In the beginning you may have to switch subjects and tasks frequently to maintain attention, but over time, sustained focus can be improved like any other skill. Encourage daily reading as much as possible, this really builds that muscle.

You are a life saver, thank you for sharing your tips! I have a question: How can we kinesthetic learners stay focussed in lectures (many words and seated for long periods), and absorb lecture notes or lengthy essays? I have trouble reading and focussing on journal papers for example. I zone out really quick. Thanks!
@SharpCookie
@SharpCookie 4 жыл бұрын
Great question! Bring some blank index cards with you to class and make flashcards of important points while you're listening to the lecture. This will keep you focused and your hands busy and then you can use the flash cards to study with. Also, take a break when you start zoning out and go out of the room and just walk and stretch a little bit or get some water. Even if you miss 5min of the lecture, it'll be more important for you to get a break so that then you can re-focus when you get back. For notes and essays, try to partner with someone or make a study group. You'll learn much more if you talk it out with someone rather than studying solo.

Also don’t be hesitant to setting up your own audio recordings to listen back to it as much as needed. It will create new nuero-pathways of learning. Hope this added to the brilliant sharp cookie. I’m a cognitive neuroscientist so this speaks to me. Hope it finds you well. Love the brilliant message!

@@lucyferno I started doing this because I tend to tune people out if the subject is boring, too lengthy, or too wordy! When I record the lectures, I turn on transcripts so I can CTRL + F and find the keywords I am looking for, then I focus on creating my own learning/presentation material because I am now able to hone in on the important information without overloading. :)

Thank you thank you thank you thank you! This helped a lot. I think I'm mainly a kinesthetic learner, but also sort of a verbal learner.

Many thanks for your video and comments - very enlightening. I try these on my 5-year-old son to see if they help him focus.

In these challenging times where everything is taught online via tutorials, I would like to know how to stay awake to watch them atleast once in order to prepare flash cards to learn later. I've tried note-taking but that process makes the video tutorial last even longer. The same applies to teaching for learning - I can teach only if I watch the tutorial in the first place. It's like a vicious circle and depending on others to buddy up isn't always possible. Taking breaks just distracts me to come back to the tutorial after the break as it is too boring just sitting and staring and trying to keep the attention span. Do help! Any more ideas are greatly appreciated.

Don't ever sit while watching. Experiment with standing up while watching or pacing or going for a walk or walking on a treadmill or using a stationary bike (if there's a way to watch the tutorials on your phone).
