MANIKOS: Shame about the TV series which completely bastardized the books. I've rarely seen such a mish-mash of a series compared to the books and the people responsible for whatever reason for destroying the excellent Sharpe series should be kept well away from any future series by any author ever again.

​@Matthew Shrubsole The reason Bernard Cornwell worked on the scripts was that he probably got very well paid for it and it was in his contract, however, to be fair, he said he did like Sean as Sharpe. But my criticism still stands as they entirely wiped out all of the India stories and just adapted them to France. @Matthew Shrubsole I'm sorry you're so ignorant of reality. Tons of authors have "sold out" and most have been well paid for it, not all, but most. The TV series you love is a travesty of the books and I honestly wish Bernard Cornwell the best of luck and I sincerely hope he keeps writing more of ALL his books. Just because you decide to misinterpret what I said and really decided to get offended on Bernard Cornwell's behalf doesn't make your point/insult valid. I believe there's only been two TV shows I've ever watched where the productions were nearly word for word and scene for scene to the author's. And that's a very rare thing. If the books are so fantastic and worth making a TV series of them, why bastardize them so badly? The Hornblower series is another one which was another mish mash of an excellent series of book. All fine actors and they really were on ships, but the books were horribly mangled.

I really enjoyed the way the TV series interpreted the books - it made it possible to appreciate both mediums on entirely different levels.

yes it would have there was basicly no budget it was a 90s UK TV show not some hollywood mega production. people today are spolied by netflix

I think there's a old Russian movie called Waterloo that did exactly that. They got whole battalions of the red army in period uniform and re-enacted massive maneuvers from the battle. Complete with cavalry charges.

I think TV was just different back then, you didn't have the movie level burgers you get now for Netflix and HBO shows. Star Trek the next generation was the most expensive show filmed in the 1990s, looking at it now the sets, costumes and makeup look pretty solid but that's it. In Sharpe I think the idea of a small group of skirmishers works because it's closer to how modern combat is. Some of the sieges are bigger scale but the advantage of a small group is you can delve more into their characters.

HBO needs to pick it up for sure.

A thousand years apparently isn't enough to be unhyphenated -Irish. It's a odd position that has a colonial whiff about it, though I take your point about Wellington.

well the war ended at Waterloo. The later movies set in India was inspired by the book that takes lace when Sharpe served in India as a Private and sergeant. before getting back to europe and becoming an officer. And Bean is getting older, so any new movie would have to be set in the 1820ties or later...

In the books he did, but the films had to shorten it.

Yea, I was expecting the hair-raising shock of the opening of 'Glory' with it's pretty accurate depiction of how horrific Civil War combat was. 'Gettysburg' was okay as it had some really good moments that salvaged the rest. The uniforms were sparkling clean and another thing was the immaculate regimental flags which after 2 years of war would have had holes and many times were nothing more than shreds. In 'Gods and Generals' there was a little joke that was completely unnecessary-it was when the Confederates were attacking a Union camp and a box labeled 'chili powder' exploded. I wholly agree-very little blood, neat uniforms, little dirt, no incessant coughing. I'm reading 'Gangrene and Glory' right now and I was surprised to find out typhus (caused by body lice) was relatively unknown during the Civil War. The soldiers washed at least once a week with soap, especially during the summer so lice wasn't as big a problem as I expected it to be. The 'Sharpe' series did very well with cut, patched, faded and dusty uniforms.

A couple of the box sets might have some as extras. My set that includes Waterloo has sofme extras. One isn't exactly a documentary, but tells the story of Sharpe from the prospective of one of his surviving Riflemen after Waterloo.
