Essential Craftsman And that sir is, in my opinion, the most important thing in life! It does not matter what you do, just do the best that you can do ! 👍 The only difference in the way I sharpen an axe is I file into the edge, yes it's a good way to get cut but so far haven't happened. Thanks for sharing and take care.

My Grandfather taught me to rough in the blade filing the way you did but when the wire develops on the edge like that to flip the axe and file into the blade to remove the burr and get it amazingly sharp. He did preface it with the strong warning to not let your attention stray because you WILL cut your finger if you do. He then showed me a scar on his 2 knuckles where that very thing happened, but he still said it was the fastest way to get a great edge on an axe. Personally these days I use my die grinder with progressively higher grit sanding pads to get an edge on my axes but only since I don't have times these days to do it with a file.

My favorite handle for files has rapidly become a humble golf ball. Drill a hole wide enough so the ball will accept the tang about 2/3 of the way in. Then clamp the file in a vise with the tang up, and turn the ball clockwise and you tap down on it with a mallet. More comfortable than any wood handle IMHO.

This is why I only use only cheap whetstones (with grits of 100, 200 and 400) instead of power tools to put edges back on my axes and hatchets. Overheating the blade edge is never an issue. As long as you keep the edge up every once in a while, it's easy to do, and well worth the effort. Excellent video.

On cleaning files: if you’re really particular about a clean and even cut with your file, cleaning them with a piece of wood works a treat: use a small stick 1by1/2inch and push the end grain into the teeth and essentially push the debree out of the teeth. So across the filing direction and along the teeth. Go down a file once and its good as new

Right to the point..great vid👍👍👍.. Tip: Back in Germany during my apprenticeship we been thought to apply regular chalk on the belly/ cutting edges of file and use soft aluminum or brass strip ( ~1/8" thick by 1" Wide by 3or4 inches long) when cleaning files.. You will push AL strip along the belly section in the direction of cutting edges. This will remove any build up inside the file grooves (grime, oil, shavings).. Very important if using same file on different materials... From steel ALbrass... etc

Love to watch you work, the experience shows in every move. Free and light, good stance, no energy wasted on gripping too hard, precise enough for the task at hand. The guitar player might be you, but whoever it is could improve their playing by paying attention to the same. When we are inexperienced, we often tighten up muscles to compensate, this binds up movement and we get tired and inprecise quickly.

Use a golf ball as a handle for your files, they fit perfectly in your palm as you push the file across whatever you are sharpening.

Little chalk on your file will help keep it cleaned out also. I purchased some new belts recently for my sander and they had some belt grease. I have to say I am impressed. It helps to keep the belt from clogging up and keeps the work piece cool.

We used a double bit ax as I grew up, one sharp for cutting across the grain (sharp, cutting) and one not as sharp for splitting firewood. ("He who cuts his own firewood is warmed by it twice.") We used mauls and wedges for the knotted and tough stuff e.g. sweet gum. Pa used the chain saw to fell hardwood or dead pine on lumber company land. Everything else by manual labor.

I've found a palm sander puts an edge on an axe as well as any other method....increasing the grit successively and polishing the entire head is also a major advantage....following with some Johnson's furniture wax completes the job nicely....

Wranglerstar is mostly about promoting the stuff he features so he can get paid. Providing an actual service is not part of the gameplan.
