How to re-sharpen the carbide tipped cutters (inserts) on your turning tools.

Blog article: blog.woodturner...
Did you know that you can sharpen the carbide cutter on your Easy Wood Tool or similar carbide insert turning tool? It turns out that you can, and it is really easy to do!
Check Your Cutter...
First, determine if your cutter is dull and needs to be sharpened. The easiest way to tell is if there is a lot of chatter or vibration when making a cut. Also, a dull cutter will require more force to make a cut.
Once you’ve decided it’s time to sharpen, inspect your cutter for any chips or dings. If the cutter is damaged don’t bother sharpening it, it is time to replace it. If it looks good make sure to wipe off the surface before sharpening.
Prepare to Sharpen...
Because carbide is so hard, traditional oil and water stones don’t work very well. We recommend a fine diamond stone between 600 and 1,000 grit.
IMPORTANT NOTE!
The only surface of the cutter you should sharpen is the top! You don’t want to sharpen the bevel and change the shape of the cutter. This is true for all shapes of cutters: round, square, diamond, radiused, etc.
Sharpen the Cutter...
Lay the stone flat and apply a few drops of lapping fluid (lapping fluid helps prevent clogging and rust).
Place the top surface of the cutter flat on the stone
Move the cutter around in a circular motion using light pressure
Use as much of the surface of your stone as possible to evenly apply wear. Sharpen for about 30 seconds (a black slurry will build up) and that’s it! Don’t forget to clean and care for your stone before putting it away for next time. You can sharpen your carbide cutters multiple times before they need replaced.
PRO TIP!
Most likely the rotation indicators on your cutter will be worn away during sharpening. Simply make a new mark on the bottom of your cutter with a permanent marker so you can easily keep track of dull surfaces as you rotate the cutter.

5 years later and this helped a newbie tremendously. Just started turning last year and had been using and fighting with traditional tools. Got some carbide tools en route and wondered if there was an easy way to sharpen them, but didnt research it as I figured the old inserts were simply throw away. Good thing this vid popped up in my recommended list. Subbed!

Try using acetone or a degreaser. Or you can try Trend Tool and Bit Cleaner that's available on our website. www.woodturnerscatalog.com/p/90/5821/Trend-Tool-%26-Bit-Cleaner

Question: Can you use the back side of the cutter as a negative rake without damaging the blade? I'm just learning to turn pens and figured the best way to get the wood down (didn't know the things I know now about using the square blade, so there is that) and I flipped it over to use as a negative rake because one was not available in my area. Gave me very, very pretty, consistent shavings once the blank was round (and I trim excess from the corners to facilitate that).

I know this is an old video, but I hope this still gets answered.... on that diamond stone, when sharpening carbide cutters, is there a big difference between the 600 grit, and the 1000 grit?
@CraftSuppliesUSA
@CraftSuppliesUSA 3 жыл бұрын
There is a fairly big difference between the two. For carbide cutters I'd recommend the 600 if the cutter is in really bad shape and the 1000 for more of a touch up.
@joesheble5458
@joesheble5458 3 жыл бұрын
@@CraftSuppliesUSA Thank you. One more quick question, is there a point where this isn't feasible, and to just replace them? Realistically, how many time could one do this to sharpen the cutters?
@boooshes
@boooshes 2 жыл бұрын
@@joesheble5458 since these are carbide, you are removing a very small.portion of the top of the cutter when you sharpen, and only slightly changing the size of the top if the cutter. I would guess hundreds of sharpenings if you don't chip it.

What if I dont have any "lapping oil"? Is there anything I can use in its place, temporarily?
@CraftSuppliesUSA
@CraftSuppliesUSA 4 жыл бұрын
In a pinch, water will do. Just be sure to dry off the stone immediately afterward to avoid rusting. Also, be aware that using water will likely void Trend's 5 year warranty (they only guarantee their stones if you use their lapping fluid that is formulated to prevent rust, etc.)

For the most part this is a very good video. First of all, you're making carbide tools, not carbide cutters. Second, the reason you put a radius on the end of the tool is for clearance, NOT to give you a bevel that ride on the bowl. That would be very dangerous with the carbide cutter at the angle it would have to be at to rub that bevel. Sorry to be critical of an otherwise good video, I'm just trying to keep your audience SAFE. JIM
