How I sharpen my chipper blades with a tip from Arborist Blair Glen. If you chipper doesn't 'Self Feed' and vibrates a lot it's time to sharpen the blades. Sharpening and changing chipper blades is a dangerous job. Do it at your own risk.

Nice tricks, thanks! That cardboard shim to support the blades while re-mounting saved some serious fiddling time! It's a shame how gun-shy folks get about their sharpening technique; too many edge-perfectionists. If it works and does the job, it's a win in my book!

Always look forward to your videos and this one was no exception as I will beed to sharpen my chipper blades. You talked me out of buying a HF chipper Shredder, (may be difficult to buy parts should something go wrong) and was great advice in the end . This past week I bought a PTO driven Chipper and I am so pleased with it. It self feeds. I measured one limb that was 4 inches in diameter, and the chipper ate it like a champ on its own. Mostly I feed 2 inch limbs, or smaller as anything larger goes for firewood. I start the limb and go get another one while the chipper eats that one, yet it out works me. I am rethinking how I pile my limbs, and how I cut off the branches that "Y" for I can feed it faster. Good video and thanks for posting.

I use a Flat neodymium magnet that i embedded and glued on flat thin 1/8" wood paint stick you can put the blade on the magnetic stick and move it where you need to go to get the bolts it works great, Great video ....just subscribed

Hi, neighbor. I'm across the river in Southbury. I have a Wallenstein 3-point hitch chipper for the back of my 30-HP JD that worked great when it was new, but doesn't pull the material in any more. I've had the blades out and sharpened them on a surface grinder, but maybe I got the angle slightly wrong. A little different system, in that the blades work against a fixed base blade in an almost scissor action. Done right, the chips are huge, almost too big for mulch. But it does eat 5" diameter logs! Now your video makes me want to try sharpening them again! But after this snow melts... And I think it's kind of funny that there would be a wood chipper video from Newtown. I' m sure most viewers are not aware of the gruesome history. :-)

If you tell me you've got some land, or horses, I'm going to be very jealous. You wouldn't go wrong getting a second set of blades. First, you could compare the angles to the ones in the chipper. Second you could see how the machine runs with the new blades. If it runs like new you know it's the blades. Then you can decide whether to give it another go or drop them off to be sharpened. I admit my sharpening is nowhere near as good as new blades but it's good enough if I don't get crazy.

Back in the 80's I ran a lawn service. I took the lawn mower blades, and had a welder put hard surface on the blade cutting edge. Then sharpened them They would go longer between sharpening. May work for chipper blades as well.

Cabela's sells Yutrax ramps aluminum and arched. I load my chipper up in the rain with ease into my pickup truck. Also, the blades don't need to be razor sharp, a thick piece of wood will chip the blade because of the thin edge on the blade.

Better than the prybar, always unplug your spark plug before you open anything up on a chipper.

At 9:00, the foam pad conforms to the blade, resulting in a slightly rounded edge that noticeably changes the actual edge angle.

Tripp Knightly Is the idea really to get these blades that sharp? Beyond some nirvana sharpness don’t they wear out / get nicked faster like lawnmower blades if too sharp? Although, I know my thickness planer has sharp blades so maybe similarly chippers despite all the noise are just glorified wood shavers.

No point going beyond the air grinder. Hand finishing with the diamond files and the micro-bevel are a complete waste of time on equipment like this. If he's happy, cool.

should the blade fit into the notch of the disc its screwed onto? Look like you had it too low and it was at a slight angle. freeze frame at 15:35 and look at bottom of blade to see notch I am referring to.

Both OSHA and EPA were there doing the video taping. Bejamin. You asked what would be wrong with that? Nothing other than you can expect to be red tagged and fined even if you did nothing wrong. It's kind of the same as getting puled over by the D.O.T. YOU'RE GOING TO GET A FINE NO MATTER WHAT? The EPA will be notified and will come over to fine you for that pile of saw dust!

Great for quick sharpening, but... in the end, you use the diamond file and you don't follow the proper angle of the blade and are actually dulling the blade again. Another You Tube video out there shows the proper way... use a wet file and takes a lot longer, but razor sharp and you never loose the angle. Clean properly with air compressor- better maintenance saves a lot of headache down the road!

Do you really want a "razor sharp" blade on a chipper ? Breaks easier, gets dull faster. Do you want a filet sharpness on a cleaver ? No

I was told sharpening with a grinder is no good cus the balance gets off and messes up bearings. Grinder also takes the temper out the metal and they’re able to get dull easier in the future. But a machine shop does it for 40$
