Thaank you so much for this video. Very educational and answered all of my questions! I have sooo many hook knives and have been a little intimidated to sharpen them in fear of messin up my edges. The reason i have so many is when they get dull, i buy new ones. No more of that! Time to sharpen my knives.. THANKING YOU FROM SAULT ONTARIO

lot of good tips and tricks as usual. keep up the great work. i really like your no nonsense practical real life videos. not the Rambo/gear worshiping ones i see on so many sites. it really is all about the basic principles applied in creative ways.

Thanks Dave. Great video! There is so much BS on the net about "how to" this and that. You've nailed this method! I love the Tormek paste. Used it for the last 18 years for my wood carving strop. GREAT STUFF! It produces an edge that would shave the hair off a gnats butt...

Great lesson as always, I'll take a piece of PVC and glue the sand paper or leather to it to get into the inside curve. Even a piece of wood with the compound on it will work but of course not as good as the sandpaper or leather. To cover the blade, a piece of card board from any old box wrapped with duct tap will work. I'll get some help with it and wrap the card board around half of the handle so the blade doesn't touch the card board going in or out. Thanks for all of your video's.

Great lesson thanks! I got some more curved knife its more like 180 degrees angle, thats a little bit harder to sharp but this technique works still preety fine.

Can you make a video talking about the difference between canvas and oilskin tarps. Specifically about how much to worry about a fire around them. There doesn't seem to be any good video online about them. There is one guy but i respect your opinion more. Thank you.

Dave, when's that water distiller going to be available? Heading for Europe soon (July, hopefully) & was hoping to order it before I go. Seems like it'd be expensive to ship that far.

I worked over in OK as a toolmaker back in the 70s (I'm English) and in those days there were so many stones and lapping tools available in every shape and size. I wonder if companies still supply them. I suspect they are replaced with CNCs and EDMs nowadays.

For stopping, I drag away from the edge, but for sharpening, even with sandpaper, going against the edge, just as you do with a sharpening stone, works far better. You won't harm your edge, and you won't harm the sandpaper, but you will get a razor sharp knife much faster.

It's a matter of shape... a long flat surface is more amenable to sharpening a flat blade than a hook knife.

One of the best compounds for strops is Chromium Oxide, a green powder you can order off the Internet, mixed with hand cream to a stiff paste.

is it just these knives that you drag the edge on, or all knives? ive always pushed the edge of my knives while sharpening and ive never had a problem.

If you're sharpening on sand paper or a leather strop you 100% want to drag the edge. If you use water stones that's fine because you can't cut a stone, but you can cut leather or paper. I made that mistake at first and cut up a 50 dollar strop. It was still usable but I was only able to use half of the length after and as a result it takes twice the amount of strokes to get a knife sharp.

Why so hard? Find (or make a spring-lathe diameter-dowels) ... or appropriate store bought poplar dowel diameters, glue on emory, papers, and sharpen the length of the dowel. Easy squeezy.

Dave, how on earth do YOU go about sharpening a filet knife? I can sharpen just about anything that remains static, but these knives are so damn bendy!
