More edit: OK I get it now, the Satanic ritual was NOT for the candle, it was just for fun. When the ritual failed because the candle broke, the Grim Reaper stepped in and hooked Kiwami up with some raw materials; this was unrelated to the ritual, the Reaper was just a subscriber/fan. As always, this is just my best guess. 1. Oil extraction from rice bran: To make wax, he is making oil. They're closely related cousins. To get oil, he needs to ask the Grim Reaper for his latest fresh harvest: raw rice with husks still on them. The vegetable oil is in this husk. - Crush up the rice + the husk into a mix - Mash them, boil them, now all the oil is taken outside of the husk and into the liquid, along with other impurities - Let the liquid air dry, leaving all the chemicals - See how this brown chemical isn't mixing with water? Because this is mostly bran oils - Mix it in water, the oil gets a bit emulsified, impurities dissolve into the water - Let it sit so the oil we want floats on top - Now we extract it by getting rid of the water slowly using this filter device made from boba straws and a funnel. - Wash it in an alkaline (high pH) solution so that more impurities dissolve out, leaving the oil. - Centrifuge device = the doll with the spinning head in the bath tub. Fun for the whole family. Anyways, the heavy liquid gets flung into the bottom, while the lighter bran oil stays on top. This is to show you the product is indeed oil. - He cooks the rest of the oily liquid in the beaker. Now that the liquid dried off, what we have left is oil. Oil is amphipathic = it is a long string with one end liking water (hydrophilic) one end hating water (hydrophobic). Amphipathic = soap. Why? Soap is used to wash away things that water cannot, like oil and dirt. You wash your hand by filling it with soap, then rinse off with water. Soap will grab onto the dirt on its water-hating end, then its water-loving other end will follow the rinse water and now your hand is clean of dirt. 2. Hydrogenation of oil: - Think of oil as tiny, tiny microscopic wood. Now oil has 2 kinds: saturated or unsaturated. Saturated = oil is long, thin, stacks very nicely, imagine a 100 planks of wood stacked on each other. Saturated = unhealthy oil, because just like that stack of planks, this oil will stack together and solidify, it will look like butter, animal fat, margarine, etc. Unsaturated = healthy oil, these strings do not play well and do not stack, because they have double bonds poking around. Imagine if your wood were not planks, but branches. Branches don't stack well. - Right now we have vegetable oil = unsaturated = liquidy oil = NOT wax. - Now we try to remove the double bonds by adding Hydrogens = Hydrogenation - To make Hydrogen: mix magnesium with citric acid = Hydrogen gas (H2). See how it fills up the balloon. Yes, this is Hindenburg gas. 9:07 see how it burns off very quickly. If he had a bigger balloon, it will make an explosion. - Catalytic converter = source of Pt, Pd metals. This is catalytic metal for the hydrogenation reaction. - Diethyl ether = water-hating solution to dissolve oil in. Like dissolves like, so water-hating oil will dissolve in water-hating diethyl ether. You need to dissolve oil to make the reaction go FAST. - Pressure chamber: not to sure TBH. I think he is using pressure to force the H2 gas into the dissolved oil + metal solution, making the reaction go. - Cook it in the pan: to let ethyl ether evaporate off, leaving the now saturated(sat) oil. That's why you see the oil solidify quickly. 3. Making wax: - Add the sat oil into water + salt. Salt = NaCl. New edit: I think this was a Pickering emulsion. Salt + oil in water will stabilize the oil into fine droplets and not blob up. He then washed the salt off the oil. - Add acid into the oil. 1.5 pH acid is probably HCl ? - Esterification of fatty acid with an acid catalyst. Or maybe it is transesterification, I'm not sure. There should be an alcohol or glycerol here, maybe I missed something. - Ester fatty acid = wax. Finally. - See this thick yellow thing? Wax - Doll bath tub/fountain: this is a distillation setup. Basically forcing all water to evaporate out. - Dryer (?) fan: probably to dry out water. - Brown stuff = concentrated wax. 4. Making knife: - Handle is made from regular candle wax with some color, oh and also used Barbie's body as a mold. - Blade is made from the concentrated, hard wax. Now you can have an affordable and sustainable Satanic ritual: burn candles AND stab the victim using an all-in-one knife candle. PS: OK usually I just explain the science behind the knife making but after the ritual in the intro I had to consult with the local Satanic Temple, who responded, and I paraphrase, no, they have no idea what unholy sorcery Kiwami is cooking up to make the knife. So I guess I'm on my own again.

Step 2 - Pressure chamber: That's actually a vacuum chamber used in previous videos. It's to purge out atmospheric gases to allow the hydrogen to interact with the solution better. Plus, a bit of safety since air+hydrogen+heat is a mixture that should be avoided when possible. Vacuum pumps tend to have low throughput, so he pumps down the chamber, closes the valve to the pump, then opens to the chamber to purge rather than pump continuously.

Ladies and gentlemen, you who have come in search of answers, rejoice and despair, for I have arrived. Sadly, while i understand most of what kiwami is doing, I find myself clueless about what he did near the end, i have hypotheses, but that do not provide good answers. First of all, because even satan doesn't want to have anything to do with this man anymore, Kiwami resorted to make sacrifices to Yahweh. Or at least that was the intent, but only death answered. Are we really surprised ? Anyway, after tormenting some rice grains that clearly didn't expiate their sins, kiwami is left with Rice Bran. To my relative surprise, this thing apparently contains some oils, and this is something that actually exists and is harvested industrially, not just some whacky essential oils for people with too much money. In the industry oils are extracted by pressing with enormous force, but an other way to proceed is to extract it chemically. To that end, he suspend the bran in some organic solvent, i.e. some liquid in which the oils will feel at least as confortable as in the bran itself, or more. so the oils will leave the bran and dissolve in the liquid. Hence "solvent" Once that's done, he separates the solid part of the solution with a filter, and tries to remove the solvent by boiling it off. At this point he realises that a bunch of weird crap were also extracted with the oils and he doesn't want it. This gooey thing is probably a mish-mash of sugars and proteins, which probably means he used ethanol for extration. Hexane would likely have been cleaner, but that's also a lot more toxic. He scoops the thing up and eats it. Prove me wrong. He then pours the oily part that's left into some water and stirs. There is no explanation of what he's doing because he knows i'll be wrinting this and wants to make it harder to me, but i won't be mislead. he's most likely just "washing" his oil. it's actually the same as what he did with the bran : he's maximizing the contact surface between the oil and the water to allow as much water-soluble molecules to wash away in the aqueous phase. The then uses a quite unorthodox setup with a funnel and a large pierced straw that acts as an high precision tap to separate both phases. That works for the most part. the oily part shows strange bubbles, but that's likely just some emulsified oils (a suspention of micro-drops of oil in water, or the opposite) or maybe there is still some other molecules mixed together. He now takes a strong alkaline solution (=basic, the opposite of acid) and adds it to some of his oil. This is a classic saponification reaction, in living things oils are usually in trigliceride form, which is a molecule of glycerol (a small molecule that likes water and can bind three other molecules) bound to three fatty acid molecules. saponificaiton is essentially separating those elements, which results in free fatty acids that like to combine with dirt and grease and makes it easy to solubilize and wash off. In one word, soap. Of course before it comes to that, he has to separate the watery soapy solution from the oily layer. I suspect he didn't put a lot of alkaline solution, otherwise all the oils would have been saponified. If you’re interested in how to make soap, go watch NileRed videos on soap. The oily supernatant looks kind of nasty, but by centrifuging it he can break the emulsion and obtain a nice clear oil. On the other hand, what was the bottom layer is now essentially diluted soap. he dries it off to show us that it is indeed, soap, but right now he wants to flex his hydrogen-making skills. This part is of dubious utility, to the point where i think Kiwami may have forgot to show us some steps near the end, or he did all that stuff thinking that would all come together at the end but it did not. Or it's an elaborate plot to confuse me. I don't know, i'm not in his head. I would like to say "thank god" but i'm not a 100% certain to be much more sane, so... Anyway, let's get back on track, what he's preparing here is the necessary to saturate the fatty acid carbon chain. Long story short, fatty acids have a long chain of - (CH2) - but some have double links - CH=CH- so there is sort of 2 hydrogens "missing". More importantly, this causes a "bend" in the structure of the fatty acid and prevents it from stacking nice and tidy. Generally speaking fatty acids like to "stack" in order to isolate their carbon tail from the water, and the tidier the arragement the more energy you need to scatter it. In other words, fatty acids with less double links have a higher melting temperature. Now the hydrogenation he’s trying to do requires a catalyst : some element or material that will facilitate the reaction, but is not consumed in the process. Here he took a catalytic filter from a car muffler, but he only needs the Palladium (Pd) part. Of course he needs so supply the hydrogen that is going to be added to the fatty acids, and for that he puts citric acid in his magnesium soup. As we saw in the previous video, magnesium wants to to give up to two electrons to whatever wants them, so it gives them to water in Mg + 2 H20 → Mg2+ + 2OH- + H2. What part does the citric acid plays in this story ? Well it just serves to keep the pH low. The citrate will give a bunch of H+ to the solution, which will cancel out with the OH- to form back regular H2O. This is necessary because otherwise the solution becomes saturated in OH- and stops, meaning hydrogen would no longer be produced. Welcome to the fun world of chemical equilibriums, one of the few fields where you may actually need to solve a quadratic equation. I was shocked the first time it happened, but that’s okay, I ran for my life and became a biologist. I’ll skip over that stuff, basically expose the right ingredients (unsaturated oils + hydrogen + catalyst) to each other and cook for a while. Again go watch the Nilered video on making margarine if you want to know more. But yes indeed, that gross thing is technically margarine. Now what confuses me is that we’ll NEVER see it again. What was the point ? Are you hiding something from us Kiwami ? You're playing with my mind aren't you ? Back to the soap again, now this thing is most likely a bunch of dried free fatty acids, and what he’s doing now is mildly confusing. Again I can only assume this is some sort of wash because nothing is really changed here, he melts them and somehow the high salt amount forces it to remain as a very thin solid ? He then scoops it up and wash the excess salt before drying it again. Aren’t we back on square one ? Now he re-melts it but this time in acid, it looks more like wax and less like oil, which would make sense if he had mixed in some of his margarine with the soap to make it estherify, but after watching this part a good 16 times I see absolutely no indication he did any of that and it is driving me crazy. His wax is kind of moist because… well he just scooped it from a water-based solution. so he melts and dries it on a hot plate with some devices to prevent moisture from coming back, but again, he pushed it so far that I wonder if he’s not actually trying to oxydize his oil ? I mean if it is oil and not a margarine-soap esther, but I don’t know what is what anymore ! This has clearly become wax, it seems harder than paraffin but I cannot tell why because I don’t know exacly what paraffin candles are made of, and I cannot be sure of what in hell he just made. How dare you do this to me kiwami ? You've won ! I don't understand anymore ! My grip on reality is weakening, I can feel it ! And during this time, he is calmly making a knife out of this ungodly creation born of unexplainable chemistry

Why? Because he made the Star of David out of wax?
@DcDreamer232 жыл бұрын
@@Canned_Beef Because of the whole doll ritual yeah. I think he got the Star of David and a pentagram mixed up. Pretty gross implications in the West, but Kiwami is Japanese so it's probably just an honest mistake.

This video took 6 months not because of the extremely low yield of his method, but because of the amount catalytic converters he had to *acquire.* Joking aside, the dedication to this extremely niche craft is astounding. Best wishes on your future endeavors in knife making.

Hey Kid…just accidentally found one of your videos the other day and my spouse and I haven’t stopped watching them! We especially love (and sorta GET) your sense of humor! The first time I saw you use a “Barbie” doll to shake something; we were hooked! Also, your use of many “gadgets “, especially the whetstone set; have me trying to find them (at a good price)… You are pretty Fn amazingly creative, ingenious, and once again, that sense of humor; AND what’s with the zucchini!? Or is it a cucumber.? Idk. But you’ve got two new fans and we appreciate your “cleverness “. I hope you keep thinking of unconventional shit to make more knives! (I’m a pretty serious knife collector, so you can understand our infatuation! Maybe!?). Just wanted to tell you how much we’re enjoying your Tubes! Keep up the great/ODD work! How about a blue-jean knife? Carrot? Flooring? Stuffed bunny?
