I can't believe I thought I came up with the melody and chords they play here at the start. I listened to it maybe a year ago and forgot about it, and I had this melody and chords randomly come up in my mind during an online class and immediately jumped to the piano to figure out what I just heard, thinking it's my creation. The mind is so weird. I actually remembered the chord progression and melody a year later. Unbelievable. A month later I open this video and my high hopes of having composed something cool immediately shatter lmao

Oh my word yes! Love this era... such great 80's jazz synths and keys from Russell Ferrante, Tom Schuman of Spyro Gyra, Graeme Coleman of Skywalk and Russ Freeman of The Rippingtons. All those guys of course being influenced by Chick Corea, Jan Hammer and David Sancious from the decade before. I'd say Shaun's tune here brings to mind passages from Ferrante's tunes from the Mirage A Trois album...especially Claires Song, Elamar and Nimbus. Some of my favorite stuff ever! Great job Shaun!

+samcooke343 I was expecting that too. But then it started to sound like him establishing his identity outside of the almighty pups. Plus he's a church based musician. You can hear it in the Cire of all of his songs. Probably that's why it's not as much moog and synth based stuff.
@pneptun
@pneptun 7 жыл бұрын
same thing on my mind too! :-D but on the other hand i think the snarky puppy style might actually really be just michael league style, not necessarily what the other band members would sound like on their solo records (given that e.g. cory henry has the funk apostoles as his solo project, which sounds wildly different from SP; now shaun has this as his solo ... :)

I'm getting some Lyle Mays vibes there in the solo, bless his soul. In fact, this song, especially the melody, gives me strong associations to Metheny Group, as well Yellowjackets of course, with the 3/4 signature and the uplifting vibes... Great stuff! Love it.

Lol! This is the dude who dumped his headphones when Cory Henry's solo became too much for him. Martin? You are a GREAT keyboard player. When I grow up I wanna play like you.

I've been watching Shaun Martin since I've been seeing Snarky Puppy back in April just sitting around watching videos. His talent on the keyboards is so tight and great. His solo material is on another planet of jazz and being cool. The music is so cool and laid back and I can't stop watching this video with my earbuds. His other musicians are so cool especially the bass player who was just jamming so effortless. Please keep bringing the cool jazz and peace. If you go on tour, I'm there at your shows. Keep the vibe going Shaun!!!!
