Part 2 • Shaver Lake Off Road /...
Central California Wheeling on Swamp Lake 4x4 Trail, Mirror Lake Jeep Trail and Red Lake Offroad Trail in the Red Mountain OHV area.
This is part one of an epic nine day off road, rock crawling, overland adventure in Californias Central Sierras, near Shaver Lake, outside of Fresno, CA.
This trip started with a day on Swamp Lake Trail; up Roster Rock, past Grouse Lake and down to the camping areas near the rocky shore of Swamp Lake. Day two was a full day of swimming, fishing and relaxing at Swamp Lake. On the third day we headed out from Swamp Lake, past Swamp Meadows and the old cabin, over the winch rocks, out past the Dinky Lakes Trailhead and onto Bald Mountain Baecamp where we had to address our first set of issues / near-breakdowns.
The Jeep Wranglers noisy steering pump was replaced with a spare pump we had on hand. Some JK traction control issues where bypassed by pulling the ABS fuse.
Day three; we were off to the Red Mountain OHV area to start on Mirror Lake Trail.
On the way to Mirror Lake, an undersized wire in the CJ started tripping the fuel pump breaker. Doubling up the problematic wire solved this issue and we pushed on. Down the Mirror Lake Winch Hill, we had plenty of summer time day light left for more swimming, fishing and floating in Mirror Lake.
On the fourth day we started our climb back out of Mirror Lake Trail, and into Red Lake Trail before we continued on to Coyote Lake.
Once at Red Lake, we had to stop for a quick lunch, a swim and an attempt at fishing. The fish were there, swimming right up to us at the sandy shore of the lake, but no bites.
