As a musician and guitar player I have to say these few minutes of gritty VHS-quality video are what I keep returning to when life gets too much to bear. There are many virtuosic instrumentalists, but Shawn's intensity and expressiveness were not from this world. We owe you Shawn Lane, you were one of the most important voices humanity has ever had. I shed a tear thinking about how hard your life was. You should have been a king. Love forever.

What a lot of people fail to notice is how Shawn used the whammy bar with utmost control, and not just for divebombs or wiggles. How he countered the tension using his fingering hand against the whammy bar was so musical.

Explain more? This sounds interesting
@eon5417 Жыл бұрын
@@TheOriginalBillyYO If you want more insight into this, listen to the solo on his song "Esperanto", and watch his breakdown of that solo in his second REH video (the one where he's playing his yellow Ibanez). He uses the whammy to start notes bent up, sliding them down, sort of backwards compared to how bending is typically used, where you start with the note fretted normally then bend upwards. He also just used his whammy for particular accents and sounds to shape the notes. As mentioned, "Esperanto" is a great example of this.

By the time Personae came out I knew he was special and by the time he did Icon and the Paris DVD I knew this was someone far beyond the Shredder label and just a pure musician. I remember the day he died and I wrote on the white board at work 'Shawn Lane is Dead' and no one knew who he was but I felt it and goddamn I was going to let everyone know. I still miss him and the excitement I used to have for a new Hellborg album. Luckily they still sound awesome so go buy them all on CD and listen to them on repeat. Cheers.
