Abel said this about the album “picture the album being like the listener is dead. And they’re stuck in this purgatory state, which I always imagined would be like being stuck in traffic waiting to reach the light at the end of the tunnel. And while you’re stuck in traffic, they got a radio station playing in the car, with a radio host guiding you to the light and helping you to transition to the other side. So it could feel celebratory, could feel bleak, however you want to make it feel, but that’s what “The Dawn” is for me.”

I dug your analysis on this. This doesn’t sound as cynical and chaotic as After Hours thematically but it definitely retains a similar aesthetic in The Weekends sense of melancholy and flair. The Tyler feature made Tyler feel at home sonically speaking and Wayne has yet another solid feature under his best. I liked the poignancy in the Quincy Jones peace and Jim Carrey was a curious but a hypnotic presence. I think this amongst Abel’s best work and one of my favourites of the year this far

If you listen to the album beginning to end and let Apple Music spin it back to the beginning again…it blew me away. This record is cyclical. As if Abel is in a cycle of trying to redo his life until his is finally permitted to rest. The audio cues really make me feel this way…the chirping sounds dying down at the end and then them coming on in the beginning….wow. Idk I’m probably not articulating this well but…I was blown away by it.

Abel has always had a story with all his albums and I think these two albums are connected in a way. After hours was like him dealing with his addiction to drugs, sex, addiction and how he had to live with this version of himself. All his past relationships were coming back to haunt him and he was becoming this person like the red suit was pretty symbolic that he never took it off. And then with dawn it’s like he’s gotten older. He’s seen all his past mistakes and how they have affected him in the future. He’s seen the light at the end of the tunnel, aka the dawn.

To those who don't initially like it, this album is gonna be like WLR when it first dropped vs now. I find people tend to be distraught when an artist tries something new but after getting used to it then it becomes amazing. My belief about the cover is that he is showing himself in a state of near death - as if to say that the next album is to be him re-incarnated as a changed young man. Hence the name of the album, "dawn", following the night, "after hours". I think the next album will be more upbeat and vibrant in aesthetics - so he made this album to be what is essentially the middle-point of a transition from night, to day - aka, dark, to light. That's why this album wasn't completely fun or fast, as it tried to capture the feeling of morning, and just waking up. Dawn FM is the album that we had to have in order for the next one to happen.

What I love the most about Shaun Cee is his ability to instantly pick up the theme and message of a track right after it finishes, e.g. “here we go again”, and then articulating it to us - the audience- which gives greater appreciation for the track (and album as a whole ).

Bro Take My Breath was elevated in this album. It was honestly better than the single release. I know there are people who don't like it as much as I do, but those synths and radio transitions just do it for me. They mixed this so well and the songs fit the albums theme. It really feels like I'm listening to 80s radio hits in middle of the night while driving with nowhere to go.

I think a lot of the mixed reception I’m seeing comes from comparing this to After Hours along with it being the biggest departure from his trademark style to date. With time hopefully people will enjoy this more and more as it forms its own identify in Abel’s discog. Personally, I def prefer after hours, but I’m loving dawn FM more each listen, It has a great concept. Is There Somebody Else? followed by Starry Eyes is crazzzzzzy.

To me After Hours and every one of his projects - - has had an amazing blend of 80s Synth pop and alternative RnB this is just Synth Pop on every track which sort of wears you down after a while.. by no means a bad album - just mid. Could’ve used more RnB to space it all out. Cos it got kind of boring after a while.

I think my biggest issue with this album is I feel like he should've waited a few more months to drop the album or keep working on it. Also feel like he shouldn't had directly stayed in the 80s style for the entire album. Some of the songs needed a trap beat towards the end of them to switch it up. Don't get me wrong, it's a brilliant and sexy album but I feel like it should've stayed in the oven just a little bit longer! You know

I actually really liked Wayne’s feature. He doesn’t feel out of place to me at all. His flow is fantastic and I love his lyricism in the verse. It’s not like the listener doesn’t know he’s coming, he’s literally listed on the album, he isn’t a hidden feature. So I don’t see how he’s out of place. For me he seems to be another voice displaying their same displeasure for a lover that has moved on to another man. Like 2 men with the same fucked up story coming together to share their thoughts with each other.

So not too sure if this is right but from my interpretation this album follows right after After Hours, either Until I Bleed Out from standard edition or Final Lullaby from deluxe (both work for this narrative). I feel like Abel (at least the red suited character from After Hours) dies on either of those tracks and ends up in purgatory which is where Dawn FM takes place. Dawn FM is the station that is played for everyone in purgatory. The only way to proceed to heaven is as Jim Carrey says, "You gotta be heaven to see heaven". For Abel's case he has so much pain and regret from his life on Earth that he isn't able to proceed to heaven. My guess is the old Abel is him aging while in purgatory and the music from this album is him stuck in that headspace where he tells the tale of this girl and him from his life on Earth.
@firstlast9846
@firstlast9846 2 жыл бұрын
I think you took the titles of both songs too literally - - Until I Bleed Out was about repeating the same mistakes till it kills him (drugs, heartbreak) it’s a cycle that was gonna lead to his downfall, and final lullaby was about putting a relationship to rest.. Dawn is himself growing old and learning from those mistakes and visiting his younger self. His younger self is mortified by what he has become - and kills his older self in defiance of what yet is to come. His older self is mortified by the self destructive life he was living once. But it’s all different takes on it - and that’s mine.

what also supports your theory is that the album actually loops itself, so him growing old in the purgatory, listening to this album over and over, is totally possible.
