Insecurity at the Off Grid Cabin - Doors, Firewood and an Outhouse

My Self Reliance

My Self Reliance

6 жыл бұрын

I finally install a front door on the cabin and explain whether it's the final product or not. I almost complete the outhouse, I add some more moss to the walls (chinking) and I cut and split a face-cord of red oak firewood. I cook three meals - venison stew, spanish frittata ( • Cabin Cookout: Breakfa... ) and sourdough grilled cheese.
In My Self Reflections, I talk about insecurity, shyness and the overcoming of it to lead a happy and successful life.
The off grid log cabin is starting to feel a little more like a home with operating doors and windows, a functional outhouse, a pile of firewood to heat the tiny home and the beginnings of a stone and wood plank floor to keep the cabin warm and dry under foot.
Winter is basically here - the weather fluctuates around the freezing temperature mark, with snow one day and rain the next. The clay and moss that I have stored in the cabin for chinking is frozen solid and it takes a hot fire in the wood stove to thaw it out.

Hey Shawn I just want to say thank you for being a father figure for me. My dad passed away last year and your videos and Joe's really helped me get through that dark time. I ship for bootcamp in a couple months and your videos really help me relax after a long week of training. You give sound life advice and you've given me a longterm goal to work toward in the future. Thank you so much for everything you do. Please keep up the good work! God bless!

Nick Howard : I’m so sorry about your dad passing away! But from reading your comment I know you will be okay in life. You are so smart to choose this man Shawn as a role model. In my eyes you could not have chosen a better one. Shawn is a very solid and good man. Treats his dog with kindness, which is something I judge people by. Isn’t it amazing and inspiring to see how he’s built this cabin by hand? Best of luck in your future, Nick. You are a strong man already and you make great decisions! 👍🏼❤️

An observation. It's just the old Army medic in me, I hope you'll take this advice...When chopping wood I HIGHLY recommend using eye protection when doing so. It just takes one piece of wood or ice to do serious damage, and shut down production. Remember, when by yourself, YOU are your own first responder. Thanks for posting these awesome videos! I think your observation is of great importance, me and my family have lived in isolated regions in south america for years. a "SILLY" ACCIDENT AS THIS ONE YOU MENTION, ( sorry 4 caps ). Imagine yourself caring a 3 y old son, mother, veterinarian working 30 miles away without cellphone coberture , any "sully " accident compromisses the safety of the whole group, because is not just you. Mi inglish isnt for sure the best , but I hope good enough to make my point clear. This guy should have thankyou a lot, about your comment, but he stayed silent. I think his channel is great but, theres nothing top do abut that, we r just inperfect humans and some people even doing great things, are only worried about to get aplauses and cant reserve some 1 min to say " hey, thanyou for your good advice"

He's right. Im a retired RN. A friends husband was going to do just one more small thing to a wood project to finish for Christmas and didn't bother wearing his safety glasses. A small sliver of wood kicked up into his eye and within a short time he had to have a cornea transplant.

We live in a world that is full of insecurity. I came from a military family that was traveling around the world. As a child I learned if you didn't speak and learn lessons, you din't have opportunities. The main reason most people are somewhat insecure is fear of failure. Yes, not being able to be everything the world expects of us. I learned you will never be successful in life if you don't separate yourself from what others expect of you. Thanks for a wonderful video!

In a world that’s so cold, confusing and seems at times hopeless, it’s inspiring and motivating to have met you. Dreams can come true and you can live the life you want if you believe, are willing to have the courage, passion and will to do what’s necessary to achieve those goals and dreams. I have been at a very very tough time in my life. At 58 you can lose hope and sight of what’s most important. Thank you so sharing so much more than the cabin. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, your dreams and your life with us. You have impacted my life more than you could have ever imagined. I never really had any role models or people that I have truly looked up too. If I can achieve some of what you have in character and action then I will consider myself successful. I have only seen a few videos so far but I intend on watching them all to learn to live life more fuller and with meaning. Thank you

Watching you work is nothing short of orchestral. It's like watching a balarena dance. There is no fumbling or discord. You just glide through everything so smoothly and calculated. I find it absolutely hypnotising and therapeutic. I love all the little tricks you use like nailing a thin strip of wood on your boards and to hold them in place between panels. You just slip it in place and then nail it in place. Or the guide boards you use to put up your long boards. Simply brilliant!!!! Also, your camera shots are superb and you narrate your story of work beautifully!!!! Great camera angles and story telling and you don't even have to talk. I.e. you got up, found everything was frozen, had to go out to collect wood and then started your fire. And all without saying a word. I LOVE THIS CHANNEL!!!!!!!!!!

Tip: It's a bit late now I know, but you can utilize this technique on your next build God willing. Because you're not using screws, with play from various sources i.e. wind, wear, etc and/or settlement over time your nails will start to work loose, because of the way you're placing them (all parallel). When you're hammering nails in groups: Angle each one at a different direction from each other. As opposed to straight (90 degrees). For example hammer each nail at say 70 degrees from the surface, and point each nail at a different "trajectory", if you know what I mean? This will cause them to behave more like anchors, and will increase the lifespan of your projects significantly.... Or use screws. Use screws! Congrats on the build. It's beyond impressive. As for your philosophy on life and regrets: My momma told me what's for you wont pass you... And I believe her.

I came back to watch again. You remind me of my father, by the hard work and dedication. My father worked hard like that and I did my whole life. He raised 7 kids, but we all drifted apart. Sad, but is what it is. I raised 2 girls and have 2 grandaughters and 2 baby grandsons. I raised them alone because I devorced my husband and he took off and never came back. When he did, he still never helped me ever. He died a couple months ago, left nothing My children never had a father relationship and it is still so tough on them, even as they wept for it at his side when he passed. Anyway, I'm 59 now and still struggling, but my babies all are my life, and I have such great admiration for a hard working man. I miss my parents. They are with the lord. But I will see them again. Keep up the great job, and please watch out for the moose, and bears!♡♡♡

I've been "lurking" here for a while and would like to congratulate you on your drive and successes! I grew up in rural northern Maine with my grandfather as my primary father figure and mentor. We spent countless days camping, fishing, hunting, trapping, and working on his off-grid camp. Even though I couldn't think of a better way to spend time than to do it with my superhero grandfather (In my teenage years, time with him usually won out over partying with friends- they often wanted to hang with us!), I didn't quite understand how incredibly important those times were. Despite his absence now, I am still finding lessons that he taught me, either directly or by example, that make me who I am. What you are doing is important to so much more than your self reliance. It is formative- rippling to a huge circle- and will positively impact generations of your family long after you have gone! Keep passing that shit on, sir!

Good talk you gave. We are being conditioned to use our ego's that are taking us away from being civil to each other, which then creates unrest in people. I grew up in a time when ego's were not prevalent and sure miss the human side of life we had. People talked civil to each other, didn't make conversations into head butting competitions and they cared about their fellow man. It's still around although generations are being altered and we are seeing a change in the public attitude for sure. Beautiful cabin you are building. I will subscribe, all the best over the holiday season.

You captured the curling smoke and the coziness of a meal roasting over the stove in a seasoned pan, the sound of crunching snow and leaves underfoot yet again. I like the zoom in on that great chimney action. About insecurity, I often ruminate over the unknown lost opportunities of my past from not feeling good enough to play certain sports, speak up at the right time or make myself known but because I am a work in progress, I joke that if I had accomplished what I have a lot earlier I'd be President by now. Haha.

My wife and I had to go through the same thing - loss of our business in 2006, It has taken until today to recover - I suppose we have never actually "recovered" but we are okay and living on our homestead. Not as rustic as your place but we make and grow some of our food and love to do homemade meals, so much better. we cut firewood for heat, well for water, now if we can just get away from Ontario Hydro...one day we will.Great postings. Really love all you do.

I really like your advice. I’m one of those shy women. I do have grown boys and been divorced for a long time now. Shyness has kept me from my goals. In elementary school I was in a spelling bee. If you win you go to the big city and win some money. I misspelled a word on purpose cause I was afraid to go. My whole life has been like that. I’m 70 now. Still have a lot of interest but I feel pretty much done now. I had an over bearing Grandmother I think that’s my problem. Anyway, thanks I enjoyed it. Love the cabin.

Hey. I am 23 but go for it! You have made it, you have made it through all these years! You don't owe anything to anyone, your are probably retired right now - you have the freedom I wish I had already now. To tell people to go screw themselves and to do whatever you want. Don't wait for tomorrow, go today.

I just stumbled on your KZfaq channel, and am loving your videos. Listen, I'm not in the habit of making the remarks I'm about to make to a complete stranger on a digital platform. But I just read your description, and listened to your last audio commentary, and learned that you suffer both from insecurity and from shyness. I know that shyness has a genetic component, which research is proving can be incredibly strong, and no comment from a stranger is going to undo any insecurities you may have. That said, I'm likely old enough to be your mother (59), but let me tell you, you have an awful lot going for you! First, you're handsome as hell, fit, have a lovely voice and beautiful eyes. But your skills! Oh my gosh. I love the cabin you're building, and am so impressed with your precision and quiet, capable nature. To many people --men and women-- this type of personality is very appealing, as a friend and as a partner. I certainly don't know the rest of your life, and would never want to trivialize anything you feel you're struggling with --never. But, man, you're an impressive guy. (And cute as can be.) Ok, I'll take my blushing cheeks and shut up now. (Thanks for making the videos; they're fantastic and I'm hooked. :)

I've split a fair amount of wood with an axe. One day several years ago I was at it and had a piece of the log come off the blade and shoot directly back up into my face. It happened fast enough that there was absolutely no way to react and avoid it- it struck me directly over my right eye. I'm fairly certain I would have literally lost that eye except that I wear prescription glasses... AND I'd taken the precaution of having them made from safety glass material since I'm a pretty active person. As it was I had cuts from my glasses frames in my eyebrow over my eye and my cheek directly below my eye, and got a decent shiner from it too. Super glad I made that precautionary decision to have my glasses made the way I did! This comment isn't meant to be a criticism at all, just an anecdote that might make you interested in wearing safety glasses yourself when splitting wood. It must be a pretty rare thing to happen; I've only ever had it happen to me once in any event. Best of luck to you sir, and tons of respect for what you're doing and how you're putting yourself out there.

Ironic. I sit here reading this comment while my eye hurts. I watch KZfaq videos during breaks when working at home. I was cutting PVC pipe 30 minutes ago and a cut off was just barely hanging on, so I hit it with the back end of my saw to break it. It broke, flipping hard upward into my eye, didn't even blink. Now I'll be an hour behind on my work. Feeling dumb, lol

Similar happened to me when I was splitting Ash cordwood out in the woods one day. It happened so fast I couldn't react and it hit me on my right eyebrow. My eye swelled up so much I could hardly see to drive home later. Put ice on it but had a huge black eye next day. I had to go out and had an eyeshadow which exactly matched the colour! So I stuck that on my other eye to kind of balance things out....haha. Everyone said how "well" I looked. When the bruise turned yellowy green that was a bit more challenging.
