This movie was such an emotional rollercoaster!

I absolutely LOVE this movie. A lot of people think if it's Stephen King, it has to be guts and gore. But horror is subjective. Being thrown in jail for a crime you didn't commit is absolutely horrifying!! Brilliant writing and brilliant acting.

In 1995 I turned this movie on alone in a hotel room at 2am as something to listen to trying to fall asleep. 3 hours later I was standing on the bed teary eyed and clapping. Best movie ever. Glad you both loved it too!

This film was always so special to me. I had a brain aneurism some 30 years ago and was not expected to live. After a very new and at the time very experimental surgery my family was not sure how much of me was still there mentally. My brother was my bedside when I woke. He asked me if there was anything he could get me, he looked so concerned and I wanted to make him relax, but I could feel myself falling back asleep so I said "A poster of Rita Hayworth and a rock hammer", and I fell back asleep under all the drugs. He went dejected back to the quiet room and told the family what I had said and he was sure I was not there mentally. My wife burst out laughing and said "Oh no, that's him, its his favorite movie, he is saying he wants to escape". She was exactly right. a couple of decades later after my wife was diagnosed with cancer and got through chemo, I took her to Zihuatanejo

"I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope..." Few movies have a better closing line. An absolute masterpiece.

There's a reason why this movie is still one of the highest-rated ever. Great story, acting, direction, characters, score, and very re-watchable.

This masterpiece is not the only one by Frank Darabont. He is also screenwriter / director of *"The Green Mile".* It's another prison movie also with an original story by Stephen King. An ABSOLUTE MUST WATCH!!

The one aspect of Andy’s escape that most people don’t connect is that by exposing the nature of the system a softer approach was adopted and that is why Red got paroled. It’s the last and most important part of the brilliance of the writing. Will always be my favorite movie.

It was nominated for seven Academy awards including Best Picture and Best Actor(Morgan Freeman) but didn't win any of them. After being released on home video and shown on cable TV it soon became one of the most popular films of all time and is regarded as a classic.

To me, there are 3 perfect "non-horror" Stephen King movies. This, The Green Mile, and Stand By Me. I highly recommend you react to the other two if you haven't seen them already. Also, if you haven't seen Dead Poets Society, that is a must watch also. Especially since you guys are teachers.

My heart was aching for you from the moment I saw your reaction to the first brutal scene. I just kept saying, "hang in there, you'll love the redemption in the end". I'm glad you stuck with it, and there's NO SHAME in "turning away from the evilness". Love that about you!

The last 20 minutes of this movie is so totally perfect. The use of quiet, the use of Morgans amazing voice. It was simple and so still; doesnt need big action with small and quiet is more powerful.

The Green Mile is another movie that is always great seeing people to react to. Tom Hanks at his finest, next to Forest Gump.

I love that you put in Reds honest and full answer. How he wishes he could talk to his younger, dumber self is really profound. Hits home that its not just the time hes served, its all of his own life he wasted when he committed that crime. Whats more an example of a changed man than him admitting hes got to spend the rest of his life wishing he knew then what he knows now and nothing will ever change that?

When Amber was so upset, I wanted to reassure her to stick with it because of the end. The end makes it all worth it. This movie is about deep friendship at its core. It's one of my favorites. Even though I always cry about Brook dying and Red being denied parole, it's in my top 5 movies.

We are all crying with you...this movie is so powerful the emotions don't stop, even after many, many watches.

This movie has it all. It's a buddy movie, an odd couple movie, a revenge movie, a movie about making the best of whatever situation you find yourself in, a movie about coming to terms with your past mistakes, a movie about hope and disappointment, a movie about trying to help others even when your own situation is bleak, a prison break movie, a movie about good and evil, and most of all a movie about the human spirit and never giving up.

My great-grandfather was incarcerated in the actual prison used in the filming of 'Shawshank Redemption' (The Ohio State Reformatory). He was there in 1913 after he and some friends robbed a saloon in Cleveland, Ohio (he got shot 5 times by the saloon owners bad-ass wife! and somehow, he lived.) He was there in 1921 for another crime (some kind of robbery) I found a prison record for him and it said he was thrown in "the hole" a few times for making skeleton keys (he was a tool maker). And P.S. the apple fell VERY FAR from the tree! lol

Both Shawshank and Green Mile were short stories by Stephen King adapted into movies and directed by Frank Darabont! I think that you can tell in the story telling,comedic timing,and overall delivery! Both outstanding films!!

I love the line: "the last thing to go through his head other than that bullet..." What makes this movie great is the breadth of emotion... the extreme lows... AND highs.

Fun fact: "Captain Byron Hadley" (The cruel prison guard leader) is played by Clancy Brown. Clancy also plays, in probably, the most popular KIDS show right now. He's the voice of 'Mr. Krabs' in "SpongeBob SquarePants."

The letter scene towards the end, especially when he says chessboard ready and hope is a good thing and good things never die, gets me every time. I have seen this film over 100 times and still cry buckets, a true masterpiece.

You guys reminded me how difficult it was to watch this the first time, many years ago. My hairstylist so heavily promoted it, that I was encouraged to push through, like you guys did. Such a big reward at the end - and not just for a moment, like many movies, - but the whole sequence of hope, victory, and retribution playing out was worth baring through all the tough parts before that. Much easier to watch over and over, knowing how it all works out. (and I did watch with you until the end)

Definitely one of the best reactions to this movie I've seen. After watching the first 10 minutes of the reaction (with the 'new fish' beating part) and knowing what was coming next I knew you guys would find it hard, especially Amber. Thought she was about to walk out the room at one point. Glad you both stuck with it.

This is a perfect film. Not a second wasted. Every scene, word, and note played perfectly to yield an emotionally and spiritually fulfilling experience that gives the viewer the greatest feeling of catharsis.

Took me a few years to realize just how amazing Andy was. He had just broken out of prison and went to bury the money and letter to Red before he headed West. He risked his own freedom.

The best part of watching Rob Squad is watching you both explore new music and films and the expansion in your tastes in both. Rap and sports movies are cool but there is so much more in this world out there that is still waiting to be explored. I knew the actor who played Captain Hadley - the worst security guard in the world. His brother and my college boyfriend played D1 football together. He did everything to be at his brother's games. He is one of the sweetest men I've ever met. He, his parents, and his brother, Roy, we're the sweetest family ever. If it helps you with his character, he is the voice of Mr. Krabs on SpongeBob SquarePants. Clancy Brown is an absolute sweetheart. We always sat next to each other and had so much fun together (even when they were losing!). I miss our time together (over 30 years ago) every Saturday. He's an amazing and talented man.

The greatest movie of all time! Nominated for 7 Oscars including Best Picture but lost to Forrest Gump which took home 6. Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood, Robert Duvall and Gene Hackman were considered for Red, The Film's narrator. Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Kevin Costner, Nicolas Cage, Charlie Sheen, and Johnny Depp were considered for Andy.

Every component of this film is superb, actors, script, direction and Thomas Newman's amazing score.

This movie is amongst my favorites, for sure… it’s just a brilliantly written story, the character development, the way you see that when Red says he doesn’t care if he gets out of Shawshank or not at the end, it’s exactly what they wanted to hear because it shows that the time he spent on prison made him realize that being “rehabilitated” means he knows there’s no way of going back in time, and that the person he became is all that’s left, period; he says “I’m the only guilty man in Shawshank”, which means he knows the “truth” so to speak. And the twist on the end, in Dufresne’s cell, is just spine chilling goosebump inducing… it’s just a masterpiece movie

A very interesting historically accurate detail that this movie includes that most people don't get without being told (I didn't) is, during the part where the police come to the prison and are arresting the big guard, the detective pulls a card out of his pocket and reads him his Miranda rights from the card. I never thought to ask why the cop wouldn't have the memorized. The reason is because, the year that scene was supposed to have happened is 1966 and that was the year that Miranda rights were introduced, so reading those rights to a suspect was a brand new procedure.

I’m a picky movie watcher, but when people say this is the greatest movie ever, I don’t necessarily disagree. I don’t agree, but I don’t disagree. There’s just something about this movie that makes it a transcendent experience.

I am SO glad that you enjoyed my all-time favorite movie. This movie SHOULD HAVE won the Oscar that year, which went to "Forrest Gump". "Gump" was a really good movie, but this one was great. A movie of far more substance, in my opinion. Again, I'm so happy that you enjoyed it.

If there is such thing as a motion picture masterpiece, I’m pretty sure this is the one. Probably on most everyone’s top 10 list of all time. This movie came out in 1994, maybe the last great year in movies. So many classics that year, but 4 movies that came out that year that should be seen by everyone! Shawshank, Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction and The Lion King.

Many of the scenes were filmed at the former Ohio State Reformatory, which was in operation from 1896-1990. It actually offers regular tours--which is something you might consider if you're planning a Rock and Roll HOF/Pro Football HOF trip. That's because it's located in Mansfield, Ohio--about an hour away from both Cleveland and Canton.

This movie is an emotional rollercoaster. The highs are right up there, and the lows are way, way down. It is such a great movie!

You guys aren't built for the rough stuff. Neither am I and I feel every inch of your emotions.

It can be painful in part but when you get to the end you realize that it's a perfect story of all the aspects that make us human. Ultimately the resilience and friendship triumph. It's a beautiful story that you don't often see with male leads. And the story is crafted beautifully so that the audience is just as surprised as the characters in the cell when the rock goes through the poster and the truth is unveiled.

The last act of Shawshank never fails to make me tear up, and fill my heart with joy.

When the movie was send out in the cinema's, it wasn't well received but when the movie was put up for rent, millions of people watched it and liked it and then it became one of the best movies of all time.

This was based on "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption - a short story by Stephen King... it was considered by many to be the prelude to him writing "The Green Mile" - not sure if Mr. King thought of it that way, but it was probably Michael Clarke Duncan's finest movie performance.

38:34 is one of my all time favorite compositions in cinema history. You have Andy who is hours away from breaking out of the prison walk into the light, while Red who still thinks hope is a bad thing in there remains in the shadow of the prison. Except for his head. Red's head pokes just past the shadow in the backwall as Andy tells him about what he plans to hide under the rock - giving Red something to hope for when he gets out. Its such a simple shot, but the composition and lighting thoroughly match what's going on in each characters psyche at the time. Andy is already out of the prison walls in his mind and Red, while still institutionalized sticks his head out from the shadows as Andy gives him a small reason to hope. Beautifully simple but entirely complete shot right there.

I’ve seen n loved this movie so long it was refreshing to see reactors that didn’t know going in that Andy was innocent or how brutal this film is. Love you guys💜

What a tough movie to watch...emotional all the way through. Well worth the message in the end...and it left everyone with an awareness of what went on in the prison world so we can try to reform the prisons, right the wrongs done to so many, learn to have humane compassion, to look for the good in all and encourage that goodness. Great movie! 💙

The thing that always struck me was when Andy entered that pipe corridor, the tunnel had long been completed. He knew he had to plan his escape on a night when there would be a big thunderstorm to cover the sound of him cracking open that sewer. That alone might have taken over a year-just waiting on the weather.

I'm glad y'all got through this movie too because it really is such a great story, full of great actors, done by great filmmakers. It's well worth the rollercoaster of emotions on the way, imo. I love that you both are so compassionate and empathic that the moments of human misery hit you so hard though, as a compassionate, empathic person myself, it's hard to watch how much it hurts you. That being said, in a movie like this, it helps to understand that the darkest parts of it are there so that you feel the brighter parts even more deeply. If prison wasn't so horrible and tragic and the warden and guards weren't such monsters, Andy's triumph wouldn't feel as euphoric and hard-earned as it does. The bad parts aren't there for us to enjoy in some gross, uncaring way; they're placed there to hurt our hearts so the end of the story can not only refill but overflow them. A great example of top-tier storytelling and filmmaking comes with one of the saddest moments. After setting up Brooks' inability to make it on the outside, we see him give up and hang himself and it's, obviously, a horrible, tragic end for a lovely character. But, in addition to giving you a scene to feel for this nice, old man and providing a dip on the emotional rollercoaster, it does two things for the story: (1) It sets up a contrast between what happens to Brooks and what Andy does for Red to save him from the same fate; and (2) because we see Brooks hang himself, when we later see Andy sitting in his cell with a rope, looking intense and in what we think is his lowest moment, the obvious expectation is that he too is going to hang himself. Because of that expectation based on having just seen someone use a rope that way not long before, it sets up that mind-blowing moment when you suddenly realize that Andy didn't kill himself, he didn't give up, he's made his escape. Basically, the script sets up an expectation in your mind and then subverts it to HUGE effect, thereby increasing the joy you feel in Andy's escape even more. It's just really, really well done. Great reaction, y'all! You're really finding the right balance for this movie channel already and I'm loving it. But, for real, give yourself a break and go for a lighter movie on the next one! Maybe "Back To The Future" or "The Princess Bride." You will love both of them, guaranteed, and they'll be a nice, fun ride for you both without any heart-hurting. There'll be more opportunities for darker movies that are still worth the ride but I feel like you two could use some comedy and adventure next to catch your breath.

Great reaction as usual! The part where the warden finds the rock hammer in the Bible, the book was Exodus. That’s when Moses led his people out of slavery from Egypt. Great detail in this movie! Keep up the good work!

One of the best cinematic masterpieces ever. The outdoor scenes were filmed at State Penitentiary Mansfield OH. Andy's wife didn't leave - had side action while pretending. King writes true horror better than anyone, past or present. Having you share this with us was a privilege.

Oddly enough, some of my favorite Stephen King works are the ones that don't contain any supernatural elements. Rita Hayworth And The Shawshank Redemption (the full title of the novella) is easily in my top tier of great films. Stand By Me (based on the novella 'The Body') is another masterful adaptation...as is Misery. Great reaction to a brilliant film, you guys! Keep rockin' and stay heavy! My favorite movie by a distance. I remember watching this for the first time and feeling blown away, I wish I could watch it again for the first time.

THE BEST MOVIE!! Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman were excellent in this film. This movie had a rollercoaster of emotions but made the ending worth the watch....bear with it, Jay & Amber...you won't be disappointed.

I love your final reactions, your early reactions to it, made me think you might miss out the full appreciation of the movie, the bad stuff going on early on, is intended to be a counter to the final third of the movie. Andy winning in the end, and the prisoners telling stories about Andy is a big point of the story and the concept of hope and perseverance.

Not sure if anyone else told you this but the movie was filmed in the old Ohio State Reformatory that closed in 1984. It is open for tours. In October they do a Haunted Prison that is amazing. You get to see a lot of the prison such as the cells, solitary and the wardens office. BTW, this is my favorite reaction video from the two of you. Keep up the amazing work.

Frank Darabont directed three movies based on the works of Stephen King - Shawshank, The Green Mile and The Mist. Actually, he adapted them as well by contributing the screenplay. He really has the feel for bringing King's works to the screen as these are among my favorite movies made from his works (I also include Misery, The Dead Zone, Stand By Me, and Carrie) .

A little symbolism. When Red and Andy are discussing escape and the tree in Buxton, Red mentions 'I don't think you should be doing this to yourself Andy, it's just s----y pipe dreams.' But that's LITERALLY what Andy escaped through! LOL
