You got me with that title. I was like, uh oh! 😳 😂 I love that y’all are having a respectful dialogue about this. It’s so refreshing in these social media days. I understood what you were trying to say in the other video and I appreciate the info about mature stems producing more mature leaves. I’ve kind of seen that on the internet with moss pole chops but to see those thick chonks produce larger leaves is really interesting. I hope you get ahold of a “v1” and do your experiments.

Being a tech person myself is simple. You have to have both to do an accurate comparison. Kaylee Ellen's points were very truthful videos. She has been doing this for years. Small form vs large form, for instance. But thank you for being respectful. Her Thai 1.0 vs Thai 2.0 are very good. Her dish the dirt series is awesome.

im still on the fence with large vs small form because if I put 30 plants up against the wall and you had to tell me which is which I dont think you could. I actually wanted to test this out but when i reached out to experts in the monstera groups none of them could tell me how to buy a small form or large form and declaritively know that im getting what i think im buying. basically it boils down to a very large monstera is obviously large form but anything small is either small form or poor conditions.

I have seen the differences, there are many videos try monstera deliciosa vs borsigianna. There are many differences. Just like an Albo borsigianna vs Thai Constellation plants. I look at various sources. Because there are sports or variations. There are differences to plant ages, and plant species. Look how many plants go by pothos names.

@@EMuro-wu7uy can you link me some good sources about small and large form. Ive tried to ask experts in facebook groups about the difference and its basically. Small form is small form until it isnt then its large form. Like there is no definitive way to test besides literally setting it a conservatory with best conditions and if it doesnt size up in a year or two it would be small form. I want to put this to the test and buy for sure small form but no one can give me a 100% way to verify im getting small form and not just a plant that wasn't grown in optimal conditions.

I understand your point. There are many factors that can make a plant grow differently. Not only the fact that it's a cutting or a seedling, but also the lighting, the ambient temperature, the type of soil, the climate, a moss pole, in some cases even the wind. You can't tell that the plant is different, just because their proportions are different.

You guys are my top two favorite plant KZfaqrs. I feel like the way I think about things is very similar to you. I 100% understood what you were trying to say in your video. Although, I will admit it could be a bit confusing. The early days of Thai’s everyone was getting a cutting since tissue culture of them hadn’t been done really. So, we’re trying to compare cutting to tissue. And of course, cuttings are basically an established plant whereas tissue is a baby plant (for lack of better wording). And it’s gonna take a few years for the more recent ones to catch up to the ones being sold a few years ago. I have no skin in the game when it comes to Thai’s. I only have one and it’s a baby and we’re not getting along right now. 😂

I just bought a Thaicon and a Deliciosa from a Thailand TC lab (I bought it from a live seller in the lab). Allegedly, it was unrelease tc specimens from 2019 since it doesn't have enough fenestration; specifically holes in the mid ribs. They just kept them in the lab to grow and neglect it since according to them it doesnt fit the standard look of the monstera that time. I can tell there's a significant difference from that specimens to the monstera in the current market. The leaves looks thicker, rounder and bigger. The leaf and stem ratio is also looks smaller, it looks more compact. The fenestration only on the sides, it doesnt have holes in the mid ribs. They've showed a relatively matured form it really looks different. I would definitely say that newer batches of monstera now looks different 5 to 6 years ago.

Kaylee is really the one who could do the definitive test. Send tissue from her T1 and tissue from a T2 to her TC lab, then grow out a batch of TC of both at the same time. Not that she probably cares enough to put that much time and money towards it.

Everything depends on the mother plant you pick for TC or for taking a cutting. Obviously if you pick a cutting from an adult plant with a very thick stem it’s going to grow faster, cause evidently the size of a TC plant it’s going to be smaller (it grows from a couple of cells) but it doesn’t matter, you are going to have a clone from your mother plant, so you can’t say it’s going to be weaker or not compact, it’s going to be a clone, and when it’s acclimated out of TC it has the potential of growing as good as a non TC plant.

I agree that tissue cultures, cuttings and seedlings all have different growth characteristics. I don’t think it’s very fair to compare them either. I have several monstera in multiple varieties including Thai Cons, and even my two Thai’s being the same age grew completely differently in the same conditions. I think when a monstera is leggy, it’s almost always because it’s not receiving enough light, especially when it’s overcrowded in a nursery setting by growers. People dramatically overestimate how much light they are giving their plants, even with grow-light and not all grow-lights are created equally either, they are not all full spectrum. I don’t know really if there’s a difference in the newer Thai cons due to a change in mother plant or possibly some kind of mutation due to being tissue cultured for so long, but I think your point stands about the comparison not being applicable between a stem cutting and a freshly deflasked tissue culture. My Thai cons are both exhibiting very compact growth by the way, and they sit in a south facing window in my plant room. Light, I believe, is the most important factor when it comes to compact growth. Now, that’s not to say I don’t believe the people who are losing their tissue cultures to rot, because I do think there is a lot of poor quality Thai Con tissue cultures out there on the market and for whatever reason they really are prone to rot super easily. I haven’t had it happen myself but I believe the folks who do, I’ve seen it all over the internet and a lot of them are rotting right in the tissue culture flask before even being touched.

Sorry didn’t think it was a good debunk myself. But… I don’t think I can see a difference personally. I have a tc I got in 2022… so definitely version 2.0… I also have a low variegated I got in 2023, my lower variegated one grows much slower than my original one that is highly variegated. I personally feel it has to do with each person‘s conditions, lighting, humidity, and temperature. I think all of it plays apart into what comes out in this plant… because the one that I got in (2022) is very compact. The lower variegated one I do not have in as bright of light and that’s the one that’s growing slow. It also it not terrible leggy, even though it’s not in the brightest light, but it is not as compact as the one that has the bright light. I know because you don’t have 1.0 that you can’t compare it, but I do agree growing a cutting versus growing a TC also is not the same results but again it’s gonna really have to do with the conditions.

Sometimes the truth is hard to find, and if you can have fun chasing it, why not? TC is tissue culture. It's how many houseplants can be mass produced. You clone and copy the plants in a laboratory using specific plant hormones. So if you get thai con node you can cut it up and put it in sterile jars with basically plant food and hormones to make it divide. The plants will be able to to it because there is no fungus or bacteria in the jars to cause issue and its perfectly Humid and nutrients as well. You should youtube plant tissue culture it's really fascinating

As far as I can tell, everyone is sharing their observations from a sincere place. And it seems like the various channels that have covered this topic, are ran by people who make reasonable judgements. Glad you responded with humility and gratitude. Kaylee does come across defensive sometimes but it makes sense, she’s attacked more aggressively than a dude would be. I’m glad you didn’t go that way. I was totally expecting the Pretty in Green channel to come up because my impression was your concerns were more focused on his statements. Anyway… I think when people mention they’re taking a scientific approach it sets people off. Kaylee made good points about sample size and the need for a true side-by-side comparison but whatever. It’s fair but it’s not exactly the point. I think your message would be better received if you leaned more into phrases like you’re taking a deeper dive into a topic than applying a scientific approach. The caveats everyone has to use when they’re talking plants in a way that isn’t 100% academically sound can be annoying, but they can keep people calm in these circumstances 😊 Overall, thank you. You’ve raised topics I found interesting and it led to some interesting insights.

At this point thai 1.0 and 2.0 shouldn’t even be a conversation because the pre covid “1.0” isn’t even an accessible option for the majority of your viewers… having a “2.0” myself I spent way too much on before their prices crashed makes me FARRRR MORE interested in how to care for and keep my new Thai alive than dwell on why it’s inferior when the money I spent on it could’ve gone towards something else…

@berghauss I feel like your own comment could be applied to you, haha. "headlines", "bashing", "respectful backstabbing", "ridicule". What are you smoking?... because I want some. (that's me ridiculing you) I'll admit the titles are blatantly clickbait. But a lot of what you said is made up gibberish that doesn't apply to the situation. Who is being backstabbed? Where was some trust or loyalty broken? Who is throwing around insults? No one claimed to be the only one that's right. If you actually listened to what each person said, they were focused on different things. They pointed out problems they had with certain things stated by the other while also trying to clarify their own positions. It's almost like you have some made up reality in your head where no one ever disagrees, and now you are the one that feels betrayed by KZfaqrs that have shattered that fantasy. Otherwise your word choice makes little sense. You complain about how unscientific the discourse has been, but I'd disagree. What is the point of science? I'd say it's to find an objective understanding of how something works by isolating different variables and understanding how they affect outcomes. The earlier videos may have been a bit sloppy, but the more eyes and criticism the "arguments" receive, the more refined the focus and experiments become. This little back-and-forth may lead to something beneficial to the whole plant community. I'd argue discourse and science go hand-in-hand.

I think you are inadvertently driving the usage of the term and demand for 1.0 Thai Cons. I don't agree with everything Kaylee Ellen says, but I agree with her on this point that we don't want to do this.

The problem is ur video's title,, understand that u want to be catchy, but it's misleading. Like on this video, ur title is again misleading from the actual content.

yeah I was mirroring her title but kinda trying to be more over the top with the declarative stuff. I agree tho these are click baity as all hell

I used to like your content so much, but this Thai-con drama stuff just shows how you are trying to get more views by hopping from "Pretty in Green" to Kaylee. You get much more views with this stuff than with your regular videos (You are lying in the video). Sad to see you turn out this way (or showing your true face now)...

Yeah my true face is spending way more money on these videos then they will ever earn. The pretty in green saga was like 300 dollars in the hole. This series which I'm already 200 in the hole just getting pre 2019 plants and God know how much DNA testing will be and also like 2000 dollars for tissue culture equipment. If I did this for views I would just make top 10 videos or 'I love these plants right now' videos that most plant tubers make. I make videos that interest me or may be helpful with others. Maybe you are sincere in your comment but it doesn't feel that way given the hundreds of videos I've made that make up the bulk of my channel that have helped millions of people. Also let's not forget the thousands and thousands and thousands of comments I take the time out of my day to answer and help people with questions or the thousands of dms and friendships I've made through Instagram. These are my true colors and if you fail to see that there is not much I can do.

no worries and I always appreciate comments like this. Going forward I can try and make it more formal and less "drama" like so it feels much more like a discussion instead of an attack. So I appreciate what you had to say

@@TechplantChannel no don't stop. Keep going. You gotta know how the scientific community is. This is literally just another day. One of my favorite rivalries growing up was between Jack Horner and Bob Baker, two paleontology legends. They bickered often but it was in good fun in the end.

I'm not sure why people get so upset when there's a disagreement. It comes across as narrow-minded. I think people grow the most when their views or ideas are challenged. You can disagree with someone and still be respectful and get along just fine. Once you work out a resolution, each member of the disagreement comes out better for it. If you dislike it that much, YOU should stop voluntarily subjecting yourself to such a situation.

You don't have to stop, and it Is always interesting how the narrow minded do EXACTLY what they accuse others of doing. "Just stop" is exactly why people aren't successful and don't achieve "beyond" a comfort level. You are so respectful because you love to learn and have the drive to figure things out and how and why they work or don't. Don't let anyone bully you, we have enough of those in this world. And NEVER apologize to a bully. It's great to see you respectfully interact with "fellow" tubers. Keep up the Great work and ENJOY!
