Some knowledge of history is required to understand the meaning of the lyrics of this song. In 1831, some officers and citizens rose up against the Polish government, which was under the de facto control of the Russian Empire, in what was known as the 'November Revolution', but failed due to the direct intervention of Russian troops. Chopin received this news during a performance tour. He never set foot on the soil of his homeland again. When the Russians invaded Warsaw, Chopin's representatives presented the Etude OP 10, No. 12 in Paris. Franz Liszt, a friend of Chopin, then named it the 'Revolutionary Etude'. Miyako composed Swan Song based on this 'Revolutionary Etude' and Dvorak's 'New World Symphony'. Asami (vocalist), a former ballerina, wrote the lyrics inspired by Norse mythology and the ballet suite "Swan Lake", based on the historical background of the "Revolutionary Etude". "SwanSong" is a requiem for the warriors who fought to reclaim their homeland, a masterpiece that only Love Bites could complete.

In an interview, Miyako says that for this piece she was on the verge of tears, because she has wanted to play this piece ion a super expensive piano, which she did! And after the whole song was played the girls all where in tears. By the way this whole song is a master piece. Oh and wait till you listen to "Glory to the World." I have been saying that since I first heard of this band and i think all of their songs are setup for a full orchestra backing them. Its my dream for some day to see them actually do it. So the more Lovebites songs you listen too, your idea will be further reinforced that one day they will be backed by an orchestra.

I assume the interview was referencing a different performance of Swan Song than this one, since this is a digital piano and definitely not a "super expensive piano". Also, I recall reading that Miyako is not particularly fond of playing this particular piano, but I can't remember where I read that. I would love to see the performance the interview is referencing, any idea which one it is?

Miyako started piano at age 3 and she says she is a pianist first. She even has an EP released last June of 6 cover songs done on piano of rock and metal songs. I'd recommend having cc on when available. The lyrics of this song are deep. I'm glad you did this live video. They are so accomplished, they make it look easy when it most definitely is not. Asami studied ballet, perfect for this song with her movements. Recommend: A Frozen Serenade Live next.

Great reaction and analysis ! Miyako is a generational talent who is a virtuoso on BOTH the guitar and piano. She has been classically-trained on the piano since the age of 3. Miyako also composed & arranged "Swan Song". This track is a neoclassical metal masterpiece. Throughout the song, you can hear motifs from Romantic-era composers Chopin (intro, main riff, solo) and Dvořák (Chorus). Miyako's piano intro is Chopin's "Étude Op. 10, No. 12 in C minor" aka the "Revolutionary Étude". One thing that a lot of reactors don't seem to notice (or at least don't notice until after they've finished the video and listened to the track a few more times) is that the beginning of Miyako's solo is the melody of the Chopin etude, which I think is why the piano intro is that particular piece. I believe that the other purpose for having the piano introduction is so that when the chorus arrives, and the backing track of the piano starts playing over them, an otherwise uninformed listener/audience member will know "oh, that must be a recording of *her* playing the piano." Plus it's just a nice bookend to match with her ending the song on solo piano.

YESSS! I have been waiting for you to get to this. Miyako, who composes a lot of Lovebites’ music, was originally going to make classical music her career. When she was 18, she picked up a guitar, and is now (quite obviously) an elite-level guitarist. She particularly likes the Romantic Era classical composers like Debussy, Dvořák and Chopin, as well as her stated favorite, Russian romantic composer Rachmaninoff. She composed “Swan Song” using elements of the New World Symphony (Dvořák) and Chopin’s Revolutionary Etude (official name Étude Opus 10, No. 12 in C minor). For this performance, she actually played the Etude as the intro, but it’s not normally included in their shows.

The duet section you referred to as a "round" was actually a simple harmonized duet with a follow. Ie., Midori plays her harmony with a tiny fraction of a second's delay, creating a "follow" or an echo. It's technically extremely difficult to do this, because the natural impulse is to catch up and play on the beat. They casually throw in little technical treats like this as though it's nothing.

Hi from France: This song mixes several things. Lyrically, Asami draws a parallel between the Samurai and the Viking Warriors, but also with Greek legends and others from the Middle Ages (Arthurian style) which speak of knights or warriors who go into battle to defend the Country, the Widow, the Orphan or the Honor of a Damsel marked with self-sacrifice and silence in the face of danger and who, like the mute swan, would only sing on the threshold of its death on the battlefield and finally deserve access to Valhalla or Paradise. For the music, Miyako made a subtle mix between Chopin and reminiscences of Rachmaninoff (Swan lake) to develop her arrangements and in addition she slides into Dvorak's "New World Symphony" on the outro... The intro played during this concert is pure Chopin (Étude Op. 10. No. 12, known as "The Revolution") and was not part of the song originally recorded in the studio. And I would add thank you for Midori (blonde hair) and note her perfect and intelligent work during the choruses, to finally give the note to Miyako who takes over on the piano. There is one thing that often bothers me during broadcasts of LOVEBITES concerts concerning the two guitarists. This embarrassment has nothing to do with their talent, which is so high. But I noticed that, during their solo shots where each competes with immense artistic and musical qualities and plays on an equal footing (although of different styles), the directors and the cameras linger much longer and often on Miyako than on Midori, which I find completely unfair to Midori. Hoping that Google trad doesn't betray my words too much...

Always love your reactions, NittPicc. You add value and insight to everything you react to. As your channel continues to grow, I hope you'll keep sprinkling LOVEBITES reactions in there all along the way; with hopes of exposing more people to this amazing (my favorite) band. A few people have suggested A Frozen Serenade as your next stop, and I 💯 agree. As for Swan Song, there's so much to absolutely love about this composition. You covered most all of the highlights superbly, as usual. Something that stands out for me is what's going on as Miyako launches into her guitar solo after the 2nd chorus. With most guitar solos you hear, it's a guitarist shredding away while the band kind of plods along in support. But it's all about the guitarist. Here, in Swan Song, the full band totally supports Miyako; making the solo so much richer. The chromatic chord progressions bounce melodically along with Miyako's lead lines, with Haruna and Miho driving the whole piece robustly forward. It's amazing and so sonically satisfying. What's amazing about LOVEBITES compositions, and their ever-present solos, is Every note is intentional. They're all off the sheet music. You know this because you can listen to multiple performances of the same song, whether it's music video or a variety of live performances, and they are all the same...note for note. Talent, dedication, practiced, and rehearsed = The LOVEBITES Experience! See you in the next one...peace out! Oh....and happy Day of Maid to you!

I like the chord progressions and modulations Lovebites puts in a lot of their songs, even intense songs like Winds of Transylvania. You can hear the influence of classical music. This song switches between B flat minor and D minor in different sections. The final chord on the piano is changed to a major chord. The chorus is based on a theme in Dvořák's New World symphony no. 9, 4th movement. A few of their other songs also quote classical pieces.

Excellent analysis of this beautiful piece of music. There are now three versions of Swansong live and *none* of them give enough camera time to Midori doing her solo. Asami wove some references to Swan Lake into her lyrics and in every version I’ve seen (including one live) she performs the dying swan just as Miyako’s solo outro starts… so most people miss it. Obviously it goes without saying that every member of LOVEBITES (past and present) are elite musicians, but it is not unfair or disrespectful to single out Miyako in this performance. She wrote it, and she is prominent throughout. She is an amazing artist and, it wouldn’t surprise you to know, is very calm and chilled. I was lucky enough to have *her* hail *me* in the street in Osaka because I was wearing my LOVEBITES shirt. You will be surprised to learn how rare a sight they are, in any Japanese city. I’m pretty sure that’s why she said hi, pointing to the shirt. She was calm, patient, gracious and fun to talk to. Later in the year, I was so offended that 300 tickets had not yet been sold out for the evening performance of her metal cover piano recital that I broke the bank to go back to Japan to support a gifted artist. I met her at the signing after the show and she was both surprised and, I think, genuinely pleased to see me. She is LOVEBITES secret weapon. As Asami said. “Every band needs a Miyako”. (PS, the performance *did* sell out and I could tell by how the seats were arranged that I was amongst the last dozen people to get one).

I guess the concept with this etude is making the left hand do most of the work. Very much like playing the guitar, where the weaker hand must to the hardest part. Some great lyrics here, e.g., “It’s not the length, but the depth of life that counts,” and “If you’ve never hoped, you’ve never been through despair, Ignorance is bliss, it’s easier to never see.” We call it “bending” the strings. It’s time to learn their names. From left to right: MIDORI, ROSANA MIHO, ASAMI, HARUNA (AKA HARUPI), MIYAKO Just wait until you see MIYAKO play a guitar and a piano AT THE SAME TIME! You mean “re-cap” is short for “recapitulation.” The audience is not singing; it’s one of the many backing tracks we hear here. ASAMI’s background is in ballet, R&B, and Soul. Hear her Soul background in EDGE OF THE WORLD. I believe the outro is from Dvorak’s New World Symphony.

I’ve been waiting for you to get to this video for a while now, and I’m so glad that your reaction was exactly what I’ve hoped for. It’s a musician’s song, and the way that Miyako plays is just unbelievable. You should check out her cover EP that came out, including the videos that she released. It’s just amazing stuff.

LOVEBITES - Swan Song lyrics: If this was the last day you could live on this earth Would you still go on, accusing someone for today It’s better to fail than not do anything at all It is not the length, but depth of life that counts Oh brave soldier Oh gallant warrior Valor to those who died in battle to Valhalla Believe what’s in your soul For death will come to all You shall rest peacefully in God’s Heaven Floating lotus You are so graceful Saintly and glorious Till the end of time Floating lotus You are so beautiful Sing me your sweet song The legend of the swan If you’ve never hoped, you’ve never been through despair Ignorance is bliss, it’s easier to never care You might think it’s meaningless to sacrifice a life Sometimes the life of one can save so many more Oh brave soldier Oh gallant warrior Valor to those who died in battle to Valhalla Believe what’s in your soul For death will come to all You shall rest peacefully in God’s Heaven Floating lotus You are so graceful Saintly and glorious Till the end of time Floating lotus You are so beautiful Sing me your sweet song The legend of the swan SOLO: miyako / both Floating lotus You are so graceful Saintly and glorious Till the end of time Floating lotus You are so beautiful Sing me your sweet song The legend of the swan SOLO: midori [guitar] / miyako [piano] ----- lyrics: asami music: miyako arrangement: miyako & LOVEBITES (miho, haruna, midori, miyako, asami) album: Electric Pentagram 01/29/2020 ------

Glad to see you back with some Lovebites. *Miyako* (guitar/piano) composed this song, lyrics by *Asami* (vocals). Miyako writes about half of their music. She makes demos of the songs and arrangements for the other band members to make 'their own'. She is Engineer level with Pro Tools. She has a degree in Music Composition. Started piano @ 3 - picked up a guitar when she was 18 and started a band when she was 20 (and going to Uni). Miyako Watanabi is a Musical Force of Nature. BTW - *Haruna* is the drummer . . all 4'9" of her (her band nickname is *Little BIG Engine* )

Miho went out to find some of the best Sound Engineers in the world(Europe) when she formed the band. I believe she found them in Sweden but don't know if their still with LOVEBITES . Sure doesn't sound the same since she left....but maybe it's just me. I always considered that one of LOVEBITES qualities other than the obvious....

Thank you for your reaction to LOVEBITES.😀 That's a great analysis and impression.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Thank you for your continued support of LOVEBITES.🙏 💖Asami(Vo) has been studying classical ballet since the age of 2. After graduating from high school, she moved to the U.S. to study jazz and hip-hop dance. While studying in the U.S., she got hooked on singing when she sang the national anthem for a minor league baseball team, and after returning to Japan, she auditioned for various singing jobs. Originally, I was an R&B and soul singer.🎤 💖Miyako(G - Key ‐ Piano Black hair) started taking piano lessons at the age of 3. 🎹 At the age of 18, she discovered the electric guitar.🎸 Miyako was inquisitive and dexterous in everything she did, so she taught herself with a lesson book, and here she is today. Therefore, Miyako is original in the use of her left fingers. Miyako is good at tapping because she has been able to train the fingers of both hands on the piano. Miyako can also play the 7-string guitar because of her long fingers. Miyako can also play bass. She can play drums a little.

Anton DVORAK must also be proud because Miyako was inspired by his "New World Symphony" for the finale of this song. Chopin, Dvorak, it takes a genius like Miyako to insert classical music into metal. Besides, a little suggestion: react to "Eagle fly free", a metal classic, by Miyako solo on the piano. Masterpiece !

There are another songs from Lovebites for You. "Lost in the garden" with the "La Campanella" (Litz version) on piano intro, then "Frozen serenade" more prog and symphonic metal. The third is the Miyako video only gran piano, with the cover of "Eagle fly free" and the fourth the acoustic version on piano and voice of "Rising", only Asami with Miyako. If You want to hear another beautiful metal band+Symphonic Orchestra watch please the Wagakki band in "Overture". Sorry but i forgot that in background You can hear another Chopin Etude: "Ocean".Thank you.

Great reaction.👍 It's excellent to see how Miyako combines classical piano with metal. Unlucky Morpheus is another Japanese band that combines classical (violin) with power metal, I would even say that they do it in a more organic and synergistic way, plus their singer is incredible: Unlucky Morpheus, "The Tower of Blood": kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hrqlirKIq8WUomw.htmlsi=buxyz-Y3mjmhRhRI P.S. This particular song includes subtitles.😆

There are no words to say how amazing this reaction was. Absolutely Great, Amazing, Perfect. ♥♥♥♥ Thank you very very much. I was amazed that you watched and remember the great concert of Metallica with SF Symphony. That was a concert.... Thanks to Michael Kamen (RIP) with his brilliant lead of the Orchestra. I like the idea Lovebites to do the same. Once more, brilliant reaction and analysis. Try "Epilogue" next, if you want to see Miyako playing more piano, where she plays 3 instruments (acoustic guitar, electric guitar and piano). P. S. They are going on world tour very soon: THE THIN LINE BETWEEN LOVE AND HATE World Tour 2024 June 14 - New Cross Inn, London, UK (sold out) June 15 - Zik Zak, Ittre, BELGIUM (sold out) June 18 - Club Vaudeville, Lindau, GERMANY June 19 - Legend Club, Milan, ITALY (sold out) June 22 - Rock Imperium Festival, SPAIN June 25 - La Maroquinerie, Paris, FRANCE June 28 - Hellfest, FRANCE (on main stage, sold out) June 29 - Resurrection Fest, SPAIN July 4 - Roskilde Festival, DENMARK Sept 1 - Tokyo Garden Theater, Tokyo, JAPAN Sept 6 - ProgPower, Atlanta, USA (co-headliner, sold out) MORE TO COME

Thanks for the great analysis. This performance is a wonderful example of the skill of using background tape very well. Its use requires extreme professionalism and precision from the whole group, because it does not forgive any mistake. Miyako is Japan's gift to the world. He is an incredible talent whose guitar sound is completely unique. Here is the link where Miyako gets to show her soulful side in the construction of the solo. Forgive me for my bad English. I have to use a translator. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a7aTY7t8ldKynYk.html

In case you're wondering, Midori also learned to play the piano as a child, so she may not be as good as Miyako, but she should be able to play it reasonably well! It seems that as soon as you started playing guitar, you got hooked on it and quit piano to devote yourself to it.

Great job. I enjoy you analyzing the composition. Good discussion of the lifts from borrowed chords. The song is actually almost all minor tho, it’s the key changes that get ya. Something like six different progressions, half of them twice as long as you think (much more common in Japanese songwriting, to not rely on simplicity of 4chord pop). Much is in Bflat minor, and moves thru Gminor prechorus to get to the Dminor chorus, which ends abruptly back to guitar chunking a Dbmajor sound but over Bbminor again. You caught much more than most reactors, but I think only 2 (of 100?!) ever noticed that the first mid-song guitar solo is over completely different music (Bbmin with descending chromatic line) and part of the solo Directly lifted from the Etude!(she recited the same solo that’s on the album version, tho the Etude wasn’t included there). Such a great song, composition(Miyako), arrangement, live production, even if including the choir and other backing tracks (piano or guitar, whichever she wasn’t obviously playing at that moment) were needed to replicate the piece onstage. Cheers 🤘🎸💃😎
