Stefan was her high school sweetheart. While growing up, she fell in love with Damon. He was always there for her and Elena trusted him wholly. They were both good relationships, but Damon and Elena were adults and had a passionate, real relationship. They were so alike too. It just took her time to realise it. Damon knew it all along.
