6 of us worked and lived at a commercial salmon buying station dock on the Kenai Peninsula for two months. This video shows some of the happenings at our dock and the buying process for salmon. We did not do any salmon processing at our dock (thankfully), the salmon are trucked a few hours away to be processed. It was a wonderful experience…getting to work with like minded coworkers that became friends and also getting to talk with all the commercial fisherman and have an insight as to where our food comes from. Seasonal jobs like these allow me to travel, living the VanLife, the rest of the year. So thankful for the friendships I make along the way! Thanks for watching!
PS this video jumps around a bit, it was more difficult than I expected to put this one together…so much went on during our time at the dock in Alaska! Thanks for your patience!
About Me - Said peace out to corporate America, a mortgage and a schedule and signed on to the open road, freedom, adventure and working seasonally. I like to bike, boat (kayak/packraft) and backpack along the way! Most videos are on my adventures along the way but will also be doing a series of gadgets and gizmos of travel! The micro world fascinates me the most…which you’ll quickly realize in my videos. Thanks for stopping by!!!

So you worked hard & played hard & saw nature flourishing in the short season. What an incredible experience! I can imagine that 50 years from now you'll still remember the summer with a smile. It is so cool to see some of it with you. Sometimes it is easy to forget that the jobs you work is more than just a job but really part of the experience.

Did you work a night shift? Do those commerical boats fish in the river or out to sea? Sorry, so many questions! Lovely vlog of your summer work
@WildWanderland
@WildWanderland 2 жыл бұрын
We are on call most of the time (with ice/supply deliveries and skiff rides during the day) but the crazy organized chaos fish unloading is almost always at night. Oh and good question, they fish out at sea and come into the river to deliver.

Hi Kelly. I found Brians channel and left a message that I would like to talk to you. You and Brian are the only people I have found on KZfaq who are from the USA. I've been following a few people in Canada but I want to know how it is in this country. I'm going to retire soon, next month and want to buy a van to travel and live in. I'm not going to just jump into van life with out a lot of planning. So it's going to take a bit of time. I won't be doing all the activities that you enjoy so, hopefully that might help with building the van for me. Heck, I don't know where to start (ok, buying a van is first) so if you have any advice, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks. Take Care & Safe Travels ❤
@WildWanderland
@WildWanderland 2 жыл бұрын
Don’t get overwhelmed with over planning, you end up with paralysis by over analysis (or at least I do). Just get the van “good enough” to travel and go exploring. You can always change it later! It’s fun out here! ❤️

In general, about how much does this job pay for a new person?
@WildWanderland
@WildWanderland 2 жыл бұрын
There is SO much variance. You could make $7k-10k+ your first season. Depends on how the salmon are running and how often ADF&G decide to open commercial fishing on any given season. More fishing days = work/pay.
@jimsteele7108
@jimsteele7108 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. Can you share what kind of money can be made for a stent like that?
@WildWanderland
@WildWanderland 2 жыл бұрын
Average is probably ~7-10k, it all depends on the season. How many days are open for commercial fishing for the season is super variable year to year.
