I read a variation on this story in Science Fiction and Fantasy magazine many years ago. In that version though the guy wasn't evil. He was just a bit shallow and so he kept reliving the same day because he wanted to "edit" his life to perfection so he would go on a date with a certain girl over and over having a better and better time making a better and better impression but not being totally satisfied and starting over to try to make it perfect. Nothing really terrible happens because he's not evil.

she didn't say so directly, but she says mean things and i've always had to make the first move before we interact. I've been pursuing for years and i'm gradually getting stronger at letting go. When i think about her, i see myself doing things with/for her that i cannot yet afford to do even for myself. Last Christmas i told her that i would love to take her to the beach , put a flower on her hair and a necklace round her neck. (i was thinking out loud) Her reply: Are you okay? You're not okay. Have no sympathy for people like that guy they are only nice because they want something not because they care about anything or anyone other than themselves. The nice guy or nice girl in reality is a horrible person. They just don’t have the balls to do all the horrible stuff they want to do. So they think let me manipulate people by being so nice no one can say no and if they do I will guilt trip them. Again, being nice to guilt-trip people into doing things for them. these people are not nice. They’re pretty deplorable, but they want desperately to be seen as good.
