Loraine story is very inspiring, her Chinese ancestors immigrated to the Philippines over a century ago, then her parents to the United States where She was born with no real cultural connection to China, she felt strange and even upsetting to grow up looking Chinese, but felt more Filipino and American.
So in 2016, She moved to China knowing no one but wanting to learn more about her heritage. In 6 years, she has gained a better sense of her identity and met Max in Weihai, China and the two are married.
They shared their experiences about life in china with LIVING IN CHINA SERIES.
Our conversation centered around life in China and why they moved to China.

It’s indeed a privilege to live , work in China as a foreigner !As for his strategies of adapting to Chinese culture, it’s quite interesting. Going to bars and mingling with with foreigners and locals ! . It’s quite unfortunate that they want to leave Weihai and go back to their families. China Weill Miss this amazing couple . This was a great one Mr. Blessy . Keep them coming

I agree with foreigners being privileged. That sometimes causes a lot of resentment amongst overseas Chinese who move back to China and see those foreigners get ahead simply because of their skin color. Continue with your great job in bringing the world to China. God bless your family.

For those Chinese who were born in foreign countries, and feeling identity crisis, are in need of coming to China, not only to be in touch with your mother culture, and but also help yourself as a being to grow and feeling confident and comfortable with yourself. I know someone who were born in North America and went through painful growing period as a kid, she came and traveled in China for two years. She gained complete confidence and went back to North America and became a politician!

I am not a fortunate teller, but judging by the way how things are moving, you will be better off in China than anywhere else, especially, you are still in China! Most foreigners I know usually return to China, after they go back home! If you leave, you will lose what you have now, cause foreigners are not in such high demand anymore, especially, within the last 5 years, most Chinese are returning back home to build their future in China! Please reconsider before you leave China...

Many Chinese emigrated to South East Asia countries were from Southern China, and majority were from Fujian. It came about on the bigger part the civil war where Fujian was the last battle ground and many civilians had to escape from. Though those KMT Fujians Forces retreated across the straits to Taiwan, others sailed to South East Asia, and thus lived on as citizens there.

SE Asian Chinese, for the most part, migrated a century or more ago. Nothing to do with the civil war. That's more of a Taiwan thing. I personally don't know anyone who traces their roots to the KMT diaspora.

I am always so sadden & truly disappointed when a young person states they are ashamed, resentful of their roots. How terrible. As a young adult, why did Loraine not go to her father to learn of her Chinese side? She definately has the southern Chinese look. Glad that she has acknowledged her Chinese side and seems to become proud. Thank goodness. Good video.

@Sora L my father left China more than 100 years ago too. But all our family members are well rooted and connected with our Chinese culture and traditions even though we don’t have much connection with China. Nowadays I am learning mandarin and Chinese characters on line and love it. My children are even more embedded with Chinese culture and traditions, they read Chinese and I am glad I have put them thru this route coz these days my adolescent daughter is helping and supporting me with my “learning mandarin journey”

Japan, Korea, Filipino,Vietnam were all borrowed China culture from China mainland , if you been to guangxi province, you will find the people more like Vietnamese, if you go to yantai, weihai , people very much like Korean.
