I think the whole conversation about the opposite sex being friends, in particular, best friends, has to be looked on from at least four angles. 1. The view point held by the person about gender relationship and interaction. If a man sees a woman as purely a sexual being or vice versa, then there is no way a platonic relationship can work. 2. Lack of maturity. The truth is some people are just not evolved mentally to look at certain things outside of the closed mindedness they lock themselves to. This is somewhat tied in with point 1. 3. Lack of trust for self and/or for one's partner, and lack of self control. Sometimes because of the inability to trust oneself around the opposite partner; to keep the interaction purely platonic without falling/ developing feelings for them, alot of time that is projected on to the partner. So a man would say to his woman, "I don't want you to have a male best friend or male friends for that matter because all men are after one thing, sex," which is not true at all. I can tell you though that, as a man, it is hard for alot of women to believe that I just want to be their friends and nothing more. 4. Also, there may have been situations where persons got bit in the pass and are just afraid of going down that road again.
