I pleased the wife with some DIY pantry shelves. These pine pantry shelves were super easy and came in under BUDGET.
Hi my name is Mike and we're building our family dream, one project at a time.
I used 1x2 pine strips attached and glued to the wall and capped them with 1x12" white pine for the shelves. Then made some simple 1x2" strips for vertical supports. Below you will find a material list. Also some of my favorite tools used.
Thanks for watching.
The cost on materials has skyrocketed! Sorry, but at the time, this project cost $190.
MATERIALS-
10- 1x2" x8'
10 1x12"x 8"
1- tube of construction adhesive
1- box of 2 1/2" 16 ga brad nails
MY FAVORITE TOOLS-
Bosch laser level - amzn.to/3vILH9D
Bosch 16GA brad nailer - amzn.to/36Z0tP5
lock tight construction adhesive - amzn.to/3KlX7Eg

went to bed one day and heard a big crash around 11pm. basically closet fell down. Construction glue with brad nails only last maybe 10 years. Just use screws.

I was wondering about this. I would use screws for the cleats.

Nice job. I've been making shelves like this for 40 years. I take it a step further though. Where you fasten the front 1x2 uprights, I cut short pieces that fit between the shelves, and glue and screw them to the uprights from behind. That way, the shelves are supported by wood, not just the fasteners. I just feel its more secure.

Nice! I would use screws. 🥴Glue and Brad nails are iffy. I am building a pantry and I’m worried about the weight of my canning jars and small appliances.

Great video! Put the shelves all the way to the ceiling, great place to store light stuff like boxes of cereal, cookies, oatmeal, light bulbs, etc. My father built shelves in our pantry about 1950, my ma was not home at the time. It's a family joke, he made the shelves not level so the water will run off when the roof leaks! LOL!

Good video. One question though. Do you think Brad nails are enough to hold vertical supports? I would use some good screws, or framing nails. Depending on the weight a better approach would be using supports cut for each shelf height and glued behind your vertical supports, so the actual weight sits on top of that support. Or use a 2x4 with notches for each shelf to sit on. Your support would be solid and face of the support will only be 1.5 inch thick.

Hi, I originally came to your channel via your tree house video but it's really interesting to see how "normal life" can be in the US. We (my wife and our two little kids with 2 and 4 years) live in Germany and bought an older house some time ago and it's always my turn with the two little ones to bring everything in the garden and house up to scratch and I find your videos very interesting. Greetings from Brühl, Germany Fabian

I was hoping for a french cleat wall with extra wall cleats. Then shelves would be adjustable in case you had some taller items later on or needed to rearrange as the years go by.

did you use pocket screws on the lighter shelf to the right @8:10 to secure it to the darker shelf you were nailing, as I don't see how you supported the lighter shelf from canting down once some weight gets on it? and thanks for sharing your projects!

Thats a nice design and looks great! question: how do you attach the smaller shelfs on the sides to keep them in place? is the wood support along the back enough to keep the shelf stable? Also did you somehow attach the two shelfs (long and short perpendicular) for more stablity? thank you!
@phillanier390

This is what I’ve been wondering too. Doesn’t seem like it be stable enough with only two sides leveraged.

miter saw, nail gun(electric or air, air nail gun and little pancake compressor from harbor freight cost same as battery nail gun so pick your poison), traditional bubble level, pencil, stud finder, tape measure. all are regular household tools that you will find a use for later on if you do decide to invest in them, also nowhere near the $5k you mentioned.
