I'm 73 and followed Linda since 1967 she was the best I ever heard. 2 years ago I came across a singer 20 years old now Lucy Thomas like Linda amazing voice, technique and range from very low to contralto, they don't sound like each other and Lucy currently at least favours a different style but the sheer talent they have is about equal. reassuring to know talent is still out there.

@@richardmoore2124 Karen Carpenter was absolutely phenomenal, but the things Linda Ronstadt could and did do in so many different genre’s is untouchable by any other. Now to say she’s your favorite? We all have favorites, and I love so many great artists male and female, and some I love more than Linda on a personal level, but Linda’s voice is flawless on every single road she traveled. From Country to Rock to Pop to Classical, to Opera, to Folk to Mexican. There was so many levels where she was flawless! I’m 57 and have been around the music industry for over half my life. I promise I know a couple of things. Again Karen Carpenter was also flawless, but unfortunately she didn’t live long enough to accomplish all the things Linda did. 😊

One on the Johnny Cash Show where June Carter Cash was shocked and upset while watching Linda rehearse, when she discovered that Linda obviously wasn't even wearing panties! She storms up to Linda and tells her "honey you aren't singing with my Johnny like that! We'll find you some panties!" Its on the Johnny Cash Show DVD set, 🤣

Linda's 2nd big hit song, when she was very young. (Different Drum was her first big hit, when she was very very young) The crazy thing about Linda is as iconic she was singing love songs, she never married or found a lifelong love. She dated California Governor Jerry Brown (who also ran for President) for a long time in the 70s, and she dated a lot of musicians. But, for whatever reason, not a lifelong relationship. That makes songs such as Long Long Time about a love she wanted but did not get, feel all the more emotional and heartbreaking. Even her biggest rock hit, "You're No Good", is about a relationship that didn't work. Ironically, probably the 2 most beautiful heartfelt female voices of the 70s and early 80s were Linda and Karen Carpenter imo, and Karen also had a frustrating and disappointing love life and you can hear that tangible heartbreak in her songs and voice. There is a pretty good video of Linda singing this song live, I'll try to find the link. A very young Linda.

Loved long drives, with Linda Ronstadt playing full blast, You're No Good, Heat Wave, Blue Bayou, Desperado, the list goes on. Great choice to highlight, she's one of the best of her generation. Up there with Streisand. ❤ Was totally blown away, that she lost her voice, I think from Parkinsons . Such a tragedy. Thank you Linda, for leaving us so much to still enjoy of your magnificent voice. ❤

Linda Ronstadt, Patsy Cline, Edith Piaf… in no particular order, the three best female vocalists of all time. The story on this song goes as told by Linda, a friend/maybe producer told her of a song he heard that might be good for her. It happened the songs writer, performer Gary White was playing a set at a club in LA, they went to see him. After the show backstage, Linda said she wanted it. The next day they recorded it. The fact that it is a slide guitar in it is incredible. And how seamlessly Linda can with one breath, go from octave to octave . The amazing thing about her, and this song specifically is the fact the many live versions you can watch on KZfaq, Linda absolutely nails every single one of the performances I’ve seen.

"Singing the phone book" tends to be overused, In Linda's case it's true. Just look at all the different genres she's tackled, perfectly, over the years --- often over the objections of her record companies and others.

Another female singer who had a great deal of power to her voice and also enormous control-Judy Garland. A great example of just that is her performance of "The Man That Got Away" in the 1954 version of "A Star is Born" As far as the next place to go with Linda, since you mentioned opera she appeared on Broadway in the Gilbert & Sullivan operetta "The Pirates of Penzance" as Mabel followed by the film version and her spotlight number "Poor Wandering One" really shows off her upper range.

I'm glad you did the studio version. When she sang it live they usually cut out a verse, because of time constraints.
