You can never directly wish the Djinn back into it's imprisonment. It is a contradiction of it's own power. You can wish the events leading to it's escape not possible to have happened but you must fully be aware of the event beforehand. Thus she did not wish the imprisonment. She did not wish the ruby contain the Djinn again. She wished the event that would lead to him being LESS likely to happen. The dice rolled again. The statue was never broken. The entire event chain breaks. The Djinn returns to waiting. The monkey paw is passed on to another less likely to break chain of events person. You realize this too late. He isn't beaten. Merely delayed.

Nobody is stupid enough to smash open an ancient artifact if they don’t know that something was inside. And if her memories were intact for some reason, and she tried to get her hands on the gem to hide it somewhere else, then it would just lead to the djinns freedom once more.

I think one of my favorite genie/wish stories is the original Supergirl story. There have been a few different Supergirls, and the first couple were not Superman's cousin. The first one was an interesting story. Superman saved and freed a genie from servitude from some evil men. The genie was like, 'usually I won't grant wishes unless forced to, but you did me a solid, so have one on the house, what would you like. Name your wish.' and Superman was like, 'No thanks, you have a good one now.' and flew off. Feeling oddly insulted, the genie followed and spied on Superman to see what kind of powerful, wealthy character wanting for nothing would so casually turn down a wish from a powerful genie. He learns that no, he isn't any of those things, he's selfless to a fault, down to earth and more to the point, lonely. Lois hated his guts at that particular moment and wasn't speaking to him, and he basically had no friends. Learning about his origins, the genie gets an idea. The genie thinks, 'okay, if _anyone _*_deserves_* a wish...its definitely _this_ guy, but he also will never ask for one. So, I'll just grant one that I know he'll like. The genie used his most powerful magic to make a female Kriptonian with all Superman's abilities, moral scruples and ideals. Plus she came out of the box madly in love with him. The genie made her and sicked her on the confused Superman. Sadly, they had her die in battle some time later.

It seemed like the gem has the power, he was only the facilitator, the middleman as it were. He probably had enough power on his own, but the gem was like a nuclear engine with the ability to re-write reality. The gem accepted her wish as valid.

The Djinn had unlimited power, but was only able to use it when somebody asked for something a Wish, as he explained to the security guard a little earlier in the film. Once someone wished for something, then the Djinn had the power to manipulate twist the granted wish to his liking but still had follow the rules as long as he collected their soul in the process. However it's a clever wish, because there wasn't anyway the Djinn could twist the wish to his liking like he normally would. So by the rules and power of the gem stone, and thus everything had to be undone.

The reason it's important to set down rules, is (for me at least) to be able to explain to my players during a D&D game what wishes can lead to. If I can say, "Did you see Wishmaster? It's like that.", then we can all operate on the same level, and no one gets mad because they had the wrong information, and we can all have fun -- which is my wish.

I watched some more clips, and it looks like a wizard captured him in the gem, so, my mistake, I thought he had it to begin with. So the gem is a prison, he's just holding the souls in there because it's available, and easier because that's it's job.

Ok that's funny but there's no reason whatsoever why he could not bend this wish too. He could make him sober but have the container fall anyway somehow, or turn him from drunk to drugged or just give him a seizure or something. I think at a certain point they wish him to hell or that "evil never existed", and it didn't work (he IS from hell and he conveniently states that evil can't be ruled out of existence or there would be no good either) but I don't recall anyone simply wishing him out of existence, or, I don't know "I wish your wishes couldn't hurt anyone". Still, I'm quite positive if he plays the "interpretation card" in a smart way, he's actually unbeatable

This could be arrogance. He's so sure he's already won that he just grants the seemingly pointless wish without bothering to check what the extended consequences are. And by the time he realizes that granting that wish somehow undoes his plans the wish is granted and it's too late.

If the djinn is forced to grant her wish, couldn't she just wish it to never have existed, or to be stripped of his powers, or to be unable to do harm or want to do harm to anybody ?

I dont think u can actively wish any of that to the wishmaster, the key is to mislead and manipulate fir the wishmaster to do what you want. The wishmaster still has a certain degree of control over what it approves.

"You cannot change that which is eternal" or something, I seem to recall him saying that line, maybe that was in the sequel? It would be a logical paradox, to ask a djinn to grant the wish that the djinn cannot grant wishes, implying the djinn has so much power he can even overpower himself, sort of like "could God make a burrito so hot even He couldn't eat it?" It's also a super obvious wish, so obvious that someone would have wished it already, so the existence of the Djinn here implies that wish has never been made, which seems unlikely, so the more likely thing is that a wish that affects the Djinn directly doesn't work, because the Djinn's wish-granting powers are eternal. I mean, off the top of my head.

@@gospelofrye6881 That was in the first movie, after the protagonist gets a free sample wish from the Djinn and asks him to blow his own brains out. He does so, but the damage immediately undoes itself in seconds and he states that 'you cannot harm that which is eternal' or something to that effect. It was literally the first thing she tried to wish for, even before using her three allotted wishes. Didn't work, probably to answer the very same question OP asks here.

My favorite 'wish confounds the granter of it' was Ron Glass and Sherman Helmsely in a brief Outer Limits episode. It's about 10 minutes of pure acting in a single scene. Comic one was when Nemesis wanted Lobo's soul in exchange for a wish. Lobos' wish was for Nemesis' soul (which he either couldn't or wouldn't grant).

Djinn at the end: 'Wait, what's happening? Who the fuck is Mickey Torelli and why is he fucking with her third wish?!' Serious question, though. How does this work in terms of timelines and stuff? Because the movie shows that time is reverted to the day the statue was dropped at the pier because Mickey was drunk, with the only change now being that he's sober but Alexandra is apparently still aware of the existence of the previous timeline, because she's made changes to her own personal life by finally hooking up with the guy that was putting moves on her at the start of the film. If this is a new timeline in which the only change is that Mickey wasn't drunk on the job that day, she would have never met the Djinn but her life should otherwise be completely the same as it was at the start of the movie. The fact that she was able to make changes to her own life to give herself a happier future implies that she retains knowledge from the pre-wish timeline and was able to use that to change the post-wish timeline to make her life better. She should just go back to her life the way it was before the gem found its way into her hands, not to this new life with a boyfriend. I know the movie was just trying to give us a happy ending, but it doesn't really make sense. Timetravel rarely does, lol.

I didn't see the movie but I don't get the impression she remembers anything, she was smart enough to ask for a change in the timeline before the djinn was released which effected a different chain of events., she reverts to being herself before the events and the timeline unfolds in a different way. Basically this is her in another universe. The original universe I suppose no longer exists. But someone mentioned earlier that the djinn cant grant wishes which "changes that which is eternal" which certainly includes past events as changing the past and time travel in general violates causality.

I’m glad the movies from my youth are still awesome movies but it’s kind of sad because it shows the lack of quality in the movies made today. Wishmaster wasn’t even that big of a deal when it came out, like a B+ movie. Wait until these kids discover the original puppet master, dolls, pumpkin head or silent night deadly night. Killer clowns from outer space and the budget they had to make that movie will blow them away, now they spend almost 40 million and make something like twilight. It’ll really warm my heart when they rediscover Motown music, today they have Taylor swift lol.

One flaw in this outcome. Dude literally shat on her and every other wish made in the entire film. He has a millennium of wisdom to pull from. Like he couldn't have fudged her last wish to not only grant it, but ensure it didn't interrupt the current time line. Also, the lore states, he granted his master's 3 wishes, the djinn come out and conquer the world...... He still wins if they have power over time and space, yeah he gets zapped, but they still win

No, because he also needs 1000 souls for them to be freed. Undoing the movie from the time the statue was broken stopped him from ever gaining the souls he won up until the final wish. And no 1000 souls, no freed Djinn no matter if he granted all three wishes or not.

@@GuilynSlothbear again..... He fudged every other wish he made in the whole film until that point, even the first two wishes she made. Like he couldn't have had the dude not have been drinking all day, but have the other guys loading up the cargo have been drinking, high, or whatever?? Could have given the dude a bad hangover from heavy drinking the night before and still have the same outcome. The djinn literally monkey pawed every other wish in the movie... He can't monkey paw the last wish that also grants world domination???? Again, bullshit writing.
