Did you know that Pat Benatar could’ve been an opera singer and that Blondie’s Debbie Harry got her start singing backup for a folk band? Pat Benatar, Debbie Harry, and Joan Jett are three legendary female rockers that all got their start in the 1970s. All three singers are still around today, though they don’t look quite the same as they used to! This is especially true of Debbie Harry, who has aged pretty terribly given the hard-rocking life that she has lived.

Pat Benatar’s mom was an opera singer, though she put her career by the wayside so that she could take care of her daughter. Lo and behold, Pat went on to sing professionally herself. Pat had the range to sing opera like her mother, but she decided to become a rock star instead. She released her debut album in 1979, though she didn’t find her big success until the 1980s came around.
Debbie Harry was already a big deal thanks to her band Blondie by the time Pat Benatar first showed up on the scene. However, it had taken Debbie many years to get where she was. Debbie had been hanging around the periphery of the entertainment industry in New York since the 1960s, with her first professional gig as a singer coming in 1968. That year, she recorded backup vocals on the first and only album from a folk group by the name of the Wind in the Willows. In 1974, she started up Blondie with her boyfriend Chris Stein, and the rest is history!
We’ll also be looking at Joan Jett in this video. Joan got her start with the band the Runaways when she was only a teenager, though she would go on to find even more success as a solo artist when she started up her own band. Join Facts Verse as we explore how time has not been kind to these female music icons from the 1970s.

The Runaways performed at the first concert I ever attended, in August of 1977 at the Whiskey-a-Go-Go in Los Angles. Cherie Curry was still with the band, who were performing on their QUEENS OF NOISE tour. Incidentally, you forgot to mention that Pat Benatar kept her first husband's last name, and that "Heartbreaker" from 1979, was a huge breakthrough hit for her. 'I am more like Lou Gramm {of Foreigner} than a female rocker", she once said to ROLLING STONE.

As people age they look older, now there is a fact!

All three are still going strong, and all of them look and sound terrific for their ages. Two I would add to your list are Ann Wilson of Heart and Susanna Hoffs from The Bangles.

Agree with you 100%, Ann wilson still has possibly the best female voice in rock and susanna is simply stunning even in her mid 60s, I saw her recently and I was knocked out by how staggeringly beautiful she still is.

All three of them may not be the beauties they once were but they have all aged like the fine wines they are and are still all handsome ladys.

We trade our youth for wisdom. What difference does it make what we look like. What we become and how we contribute is what matters. Wear your lines of wisdom with pride.

Well seeing that Debbie Harry is now 77 years old, I'm not surprised that she looks different.

I agree with the others . These ladies aged beautifully. Time was very kind to them .Not cool and shameful to say that. Think before you post.

Completely disagree we have just lost one Goddess of Rock, the other 2 leaders of Female Rock were Janis Joplin And Stevie Nicks. In Prog Rock of the 70's we have Annie Haslam (lead singer of Renaissance) and Kate Bush so Suzi Quatro doesn't even come close!!

All three are great talents. I liked all of their music 🎶 🎵. All three women still look good. Recently I saw Pat Benetar on PBS. She may not be the sex kitten like she was earlier in her career but she can still belt on some good music.

People get older, their bodies age. That's called being human.

But rock stars, esp. of the female variety, are not human. They're immortal mythical creatures that are never supposed to age.

40 years from now, the current female singers are going to go through the same thing. We're going to have new female stars. It's all a cycle of non-stoping events.
