THE PIECE
Kevin Volans about his piece:
„She Who Sleeps With A Small Blanket was written for Robyn Schulkowsky and premiered by her in Salzburg in October 1985. Robyn had been a percussionist in my earlier pieces for harpsichord and rattle, and her incessant drumming on the tables during breaks in rehearsals made it clear that neither her talents nor her energy were being fully utilised.
This piece is often mistakenly associated with African drumming. However, the only overtly African thing about this piece is the title, which means "she who sleeps alone", i.e. without a lover. I wrote it as a virtuoso showpiece for the player and as a compositional study for myself. After a few intermediate versions, I decided to limit the instrumentation to the percussion, with a short coda on the marimba. I explored different types of patterns, the most important being the cross rhythms played with two sticks in triplets.“

She has been described as a "star of classical percussion" by Radio Classique, for example, and „The Times" is delighted with the "impressive flair" of her music.
