I just happened on this video and it peaked my interest! I have this exact same pen...it was a Christmas gift to me in about 1954 or so. I was in grade school and my Mon had given this pen to my Dad (pen & pencil set) the year before. I admired it so much that my folks gave me my own a year later! I still have it today along with my Dad's original set. His set was the same system with the same nib but in all gold (probably 12k gold-filled) cap and barrell both gold with the familiar fluted lines; my Dad's pen has his first two initials and last name engraved on the barrell. Very classy indeed! A year or two ago, I had them both restored and tuned; the sack that holds the ink needed replacing after 65+ years since new! They both write like new and are most enjoyable to use. Both gave the "fine" nib which is lightly imprinted on the under side of the nib as "f5." it is very faint but there just above the bottom of the feed. Brings back some memories for this senior!

That is such a cool story! I'm sure that pen means a great deal to you. I sure hope my pens survive as long as yours have 😂

Out of curiosity, you are around the age of the slide rule when it was used in school, do you by chance still have one or a manual for a hemmi version, Ive been trying to figure out how to use one I got as a gift from a friend who passed away, and I don't really know where to start, I have tried a few groups but only really get tossed vague information, and the books I have found seem to be missing pages of the explanation is not very straightforward, I know its a random question but hey, worth a shot!

I am not familiar with the hemmi version you mention. There is quite an abundance of information on snorkel pens online. I wish I could help you with more info. I treasure these pens as they’re made well and will last a lifetime! And there are experts out there in the fountain pen community who service them. Best to you from Kansas City!

@@joem.383 Oh my apologies, it was towards a slide rule from around your time you would have been at school, kinda like a calculator before calculators were popular. Thank you for responding regardless sir. Cheers from Redmond!

@@milolivell Hello again...Ha! just now re-read your comment/question and realized it was about a slide rule...not the pen! I actually do recall when slide rules were used; I had one and it was difficult for me to figure out and understand. I still had that slide rule and it's accompanying leather case! I sold it on eBay maybe 2 or 3 years ago for about $45...wow! I think the original cost was maybe $8 or $9 back in the late 1950s or very early 1960s. If I remember correctly, it was in a box and operating instructions were inside. I bet you can still get good info online. Technology has come a long way and now I'm fairly proficient at using a computer; but recall being totally intimidated by them when PCs were on store shelves ( at Sears of all places) in the late 1980s or early 1990s. I will be 78 this coming July 19th. Whew...we've come a long way, huh?

It's a Triumph nib not an inlaid nib,the latter appearing on the PFM which replaced the Triumph nibbed TM snorkels. And it's all solid 14K gold, the silver colour being a Platinum mask,so I believe.

I have this exact pen, but a first production with a gold filler tube. I absolutely adore it. Such an interesting bit of engineering.

When I was in grade school one of my teachers had one (yes, even as a kid I was intrigued by fountain pens) with a gold barrel. Among other things she used it to fill our our report cards.

The gold barrel means it was either a Snorkel Masterpiece, or the less expensive (and relatively affordable) Triumph Snorkel (which was gold filled) and looked the same as the 14K solid gold Masterpiece! Superb pens that are getting harder to find in pristine conditions!

Oh no!!!! Damn how long will you be gone for? Ah, I just started watching your videos lol. Well I hope you the best in the army. Prayers for safe return once you’re done. Be sure to bring your favorite pens with you!

Thanks for watching the vids! I'll be in the army for two years but I'll likely only be offline for 3 weeks. I'll spend part of the 48 hours I get each week to try to maintain a schedule. Maybe I'll even film some vids in advance to post them while I'm in? Who knows.

I have an heirloom snorkel. I’ve never tried to ink it up. Enjoy your time in the army, because it’s pretty cool for it to be like a part of the compulsory education we all endure in youth. It sounds like everybody in your original country will end up with at least some military sense, and probably promotes a sense of public involvement. I hope it ends up being a fun rite of passage that you take pride and joy in later. ❤

I lost my sheaffer 300 yesterday. Can you recommend a similarly priced replacement? I'd used that one for 3 years, it was a gift. So I'm not very familiar with fountain pens but I loved the one I had and used the heck out of it.

May I suggest getting another Sheaffer 300? Seems like you really really loved the one you had before, so why not get another?

I'd like to call that Sheaffer nib's normal slight upturn a semi Waverly. from owning one steel nibbed Imperial, not much of a fan though, since it makes for a less responsive feel of a nib, similarly to PenBBS' minifudes. I like the slight downturn of nibs that can make it feel pushy/draggy or even bouncy; vintage flex nibs have those, but even Pilot Custom no.5 nibs kind of do, the caveat is that without bouncing, or writing with slight pressure on the downstroke and keeping at it, many of them feel unpleasant to write with absolutely no pressure at all(by this, I mean only writing with nearly the pen's own weight, and many of those pens are light, like around 10-20 grams max, while the tunings look very tight by default)

I know EXACTLY what you mean - I have a Waterman 5 with a "droopy" nib just like you described. Love the thing, gotta do a vid on it soon
