Airdate: June 24, 1967
The “Saturday night edition of Shebang“ is shot out of a cannon today with the Summer of Love’s inescapable sound of “Light My Fire”. While the original, 7-plus-minute version has been out for about 5 months on the “The Doors” album, this shortened, radio-friendlier version is just entering the Top 40 today at #24 on its way to #1 next month.
American Bandstand regulars dancing today are Famous Hooks at 2:42, Forest Hutchins & Joanne Edmunds at 3:32 and Bud Schwimmer & Olivia Favela in matching gold outfits in the front at 3:37.
Casey Kasem has a beard today for a part he is playing in the movie “The Glory Stompers”.
Jim Morrison was one of the musical geniuses that lived in Laurel Canyon in the 60’s, a small section of the Santa Monica Mountains that separates Hollywood and the LA basin from the San Fernando Valley (many of the 60’s Bandstand dancers lived in “the Valley”). Some of Morrison’s neighbors included Peter Tork, Mickey Dolenz, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Mark Volman, Howard Kaylan (Flo & Eddie), David Crosby and Cass Elliot to name a few. I highly recommend the 2020, 2-episode documentary about this special place in time titled “Laurel Canyon” on Epix.
Bonus: Name the song in the Billboard Hot 100 Top 40 this week with these lyrics:
“You try to be smart, then you take it to heart
'Cause it hurts when your ego is deflated
Ooh, you don't realize that it's all compromise
And the problems are so overrated“
Thank you for watching!

After going through basic training, medical corpsman school, and, airborne training, I came home on my first leave as a gen-u-wine, US Army Paratrooper in late June 1967. I missed my sister's high school graduation by a day, and the all-night party, at Disneyland. But no matter, I ended up in Disneyland a week later. All during my first leave I heard, Light My Fire, all the time, along with every track on the, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, album. Ergo, whenever I hear, Light My Fire, I associate it with my first leave. I would like to share a couple of FYIs. The first one is, I used to go to these dances held at a recreation center at a park in, Thousand Oaks, California, where Casey Kasem used to host them. He was the host with the most. I saw the Turtles in concert when they came out with their first hit single, It Ain't Me Babe, back in the Summer of 1965. The second one is, seven years ago I had to take a DNA test to track down our family's genealogy, and in the process, found out we have Scot-Irish ancestry through Northern Ireland with, Morrison, being one of several family names. I also want to give a shout out to Van Morrison who also had a song later that year, A Brown Eyed Girl. We are all members of the same Scot-Irish clan, who would have thought?

Hi Peggy, I’d think the long version would be hard to dance to. I’d start off all excited but by minute 5 or 6 of the keyboard solo I’d definitely lose steam. Lol. Great song though. Did they play the long version at teen clubs and/or school dances. With Dick Clark’s penchant for strict time management and frugality, I’m sure there is no way they ever played any 7 minute song on AB. I know right about Famous. Every time I pick a clip I always chuckle when he pops up which is almost always between ‘64 and ‘70, even on other shows! Lol. Good to hear from you Peggy. I hope you are doing well.

@Jean Lankton, Hi Jean, I love Casey, listened to him for years like the rest of the country on AT 40, but I prefer the more laid back, smoother hosting style of Dick Clark. It’s fun to compare the 2. I think you have to be in the right “mood” for the full 7 minute version, lol. I listened to it last night for the 1st time in a while and remember how much I like it, but yeah, the shorter version gets right down to it. I hope you are well. Excellent clip, I really like Shebang. I think the camera work on this show was better than on AB around this time, but clearly that changed after awhile. The energy in the room is great! I spotted a couple in the very front doing some nice dips, which was different than all the other dancers, so they stood out for me. All of the kids, including the few AB regulars, were fully engaged here. It also helps that they had a great song to dance to. Light My Fire is a legendary song! The Doors really made the psychedelic rock sound a thing & brought it to the mainstream hard! One of my fave rock music stories is about The Doors lone appearance on Ed Sullivan & we all know what happened after that! Lol Stevie Wonder does a cool version of this song btw. Great choice for today Aaron. Sometimes you need a little break from AB & this was a great one. Hope all is well man, I'm hanging in there myself!

Always listened to American Top 40 with Kasey Kasem - it was kind of part of the whole teenager routine. I remember Shebang, my brother and I watched it. Also watched Shindig and Hullabaloo and later The Music Scene. Now we get all sorts of programming, most of which is distasteful, lewd or so badly done you feel it's a waste of time. Sad, really. But its not 1967 and I'm also not a teenager any longer.......

I wonder what those numbers running across the screen meant. Maybe they were put there by a KGB agent as a coded message to other agents. ;)

1. Casey Kasem looks like Steve Carell/ 2. A unshaven man on TV/ 3. Mixed races dancing together?/ 4. All of these kids look possessed. Surely the start of the end of civilization. Cool!

I'm pretty sure that's Jim Miranda on the far left riser dancing with the girl in the yellow dress. Is that Mark Santos dancing on the center riser talking to Casey?
@YCDTI
@YCDTI 4 жыл бұрын
@James Maddox. The guy at on the far left looks and dances a lot like Jim Miranda for sure, but he has a few closeups later in the show and it’s not him, but Jim was definitely on Shebang. I don’t think that is Mark Santos. For a minute I thought he kind of looked like Frank Vanderpuil from the side but it’s not. I don’t think Frank was ever on Shebang...not sure.

Note how society was clearly more NATURALLY diverse and 'inclusive' in 1967 vs. 2023. It's not that ironic when you know what's actually going on in US media programming.

It’s funny how people wore proper clothing and how they were suitably attired in general, during that time period. I mean, the people had a lot of class in those days and you wouldn’t see young men wearing scruffy long beards with torn off jeans and their dress shirt coming out of their pants, like we normally see nowadays. There were no smartphones and there was no Internet around. People would take pictures in groups with real actual cameras. Not just stupid digital selfies that you would erase the next day, only because you’d get bored and tired, like the so-called millenium generation of today. In 1967, the cars looked great, the radio stations, on the AM band, were much alive, the drugs were good, the people showed love and respect for each other and the music had so much soul, back then, as opposed to all the crappy degenerate commercial music with listen to, on our digital devices today. That’s only because the society values have imposed that on all of us, over in time. But, they haven’t imposed anything on me and yet, i’m only 53. Lol! Thank you. Johnny, Montréal, Canada.

Everyone sees the year 1967 and thinks hippies and summer of love whereas the mainstream, like the kids you see on this show, we're much more conservative and looking more like you would think they would look like in 1962.
