Goodwood missed an opportunity by ignoring the rest of the field, especially when there were thousands tuning in just to watch the Hall and Scott. Don’t believe they’ll make that mistake again. Thanks for showing a lot more of the racers.

So the young lady you mention was, I think, my daughter who was under strict instructions to come and say hello! We go together every year, but sadly I couldn’t make it this year so she went with her cousin and my brother. I love your channel and you, Millyard and Brunel are my hero’s!! Hurray. Somebody has had my experience with powder coating. It’s recommended by people who know more than me and deny there is a problem with it, but I’ve never had a good result. In addition to what Ivan said, if the base metal is steel, it corrodes under the coating suddenly and vociferously for some reason. Leaving large rusty pits in a very short time. It’s a relief for somebody as knowledgable and experienced as Ivan to have seen the same as me. Great videos by the way!

Totally agree re powder coat.... also we always specify to mask the tapers on the hubs to keep a metal to metal face... often overlooked.. Thank you for such good and honest content...

Hi Guys, I came to say hello at Goodwood. You seemed busy but Ivan you had time to say hello and shake my hand and I thanked you for the channel, Also Suzi thankyou for the sticker you gave me, I will stick it on my car. Today on this episode I was delighted to hear your opinion on powder coating Ivan! I have come to exactly the same conclusion on how temporary this finish is! For chassis components I now use Simoniz tough paint. Again thanks for the videos, they are a great escape from daily stress.

Powder coating is the devils work. Stove enamelling never dulls never flakes off.

Well done to Shed Racing, as has been said it was a shame the official recording team didn't film the cars further down the field, but still loved the fact you managed to get out there and have a go. Be interested as to what Julian says about rim tape as well, personally as an Ex-biker of 60's and 70's bikes I always used it with tubed rims. Agree with yourself and others on here that powder coating is for the car show scene and not for use in the real world of stones etc being flicked up, I once had a 80's bike frame redone with PC and I removed it all a year later, too many huge chunks fell off and water was getting under it as well - rubbish stuff. Anyway keep up the good work and well done again for a great weekends entertainment.👍

You can make a rim tape with the old tube or grind the spokes so they are not sharp

When I worked for Vintage Tyre Supplies I fitted hundreds of beaded edge tyres and don't ever recall any having rim tapes also i suspect that the amount of flex in a spoked rim would easily cause powder coating to flake off especially under race conditions. Just my observations.

A great result, it does fly now, interesting about that hole in the carb inlet elbow, maybe it gives a bit of swirl to the air going in having a second flow hitting the main flow at right angles . I totally agree about powder coating, we had some machine bits done, the stuff once chipped came off in sheets, I do wonder if it is down to the quality of the guy doing it.

Great video, Ivan. Sorry to hear about the wheel-tube. As for the powder coat, I had a good bit done on a car I built and after the parts were dipped for stripping away any oil the powder coat was sprayed on and baked (The rear axle housing took a long time to come up to temp then cool down again), The powder coat is still on and looking good after thousands of miles and 25 years. I think your right that the undercoat of those wheels had no tooth and may also have not been compatible with the powder coating used or the baking process. Just my opinion. The car looked great and I'm glad the Miller carb worked well.

I am with you about powder coating there are much better paints and enamels available. Powder coating really only any good for indoor trinkets.

I took some wires to the Dayton factory since I live close by. They said they only use baked enamel. The same reason you said. Love your channel!!!

Having had steel products powder coated, practically since its inception, at the request of clients, I completely agree with you. I've seen rust creep underneath it undetected until the point of structural failure. Stove enamel every time! The only time it's firmly attached is when you want to strip it.

Brilliant, very informative and gives us less wealthy vintage owners an insight to what goes on. Thanks to Suzi for the excellent work filming editing and asking just the right question. Powder coating and painting will reduce the friction between the tyre beads and the rim and may be dangerous, especially on driven wheels. Coreagous and highly skilled driving as well. Agree totally on the powder coating, nothing on these old cars should have it. With the tyre problem, I have taken to covering the spoke heads with strong tape because under racing conditions rim bands tend to slip and expose said heads, plus your tire pressure should be north of 60psi.

The wheel building shop I used to deal with just use duct tape on all their motorcycle rims.. kind of like mentioned above with the gaffer tape. At the time they were the guys to go to for all the vintage racers. Congratulations On the car running so well…

Dad had a hell of a lot of trouble on the 1907 40/50 Darracq with the tubes. They weren't spoked wheels, but once we fitted rim liners we never had any issue ever again. Did the same on the Napier as well, and never had a tire issue. Hopefully the type 30 will be the same.

Gaffer tape would do for them spokes Ivan .Powder coat is fine until the moisture gets underneath it . then it holds onto it and ruins stuff..TVR Chassis for example

I was looking out for No2 on Saturday and thought you hadn't made it to the circuit. Found her on Sunday in the background during the race and, given that a couple of cars were seen as they retired, or spun, I had just formed the though that Tom needed to retire when the tyre came off and he got a couple of replays. It was never my intention to put the Murray Curse on the car, but it was a bit frustrating to see that the cameras just follow the leaders most of the time. I have always enjoyed the Goodwood TV coverage of the Goodwood meetings on YT, and, to be fair I have never had any one in particular to follow before, so it didn't dampen my enthusiasm too much. Pleased you had a good time as well.

Hello Ivan I'm not a big fan of powder coating either, on motorcycle wheels I found it's often to thick an comes off in big chunks when useing tyre levers, I reverted back to cellulose spray paint an occasionally Oil based red oxide an gloss black or japblack. On the subject of rim tapes there's bicycle ones a company called Velox - Fond de Jante they're adhesive and made of a strong woven canvas come in different widths an to suit various wheel sizes, beats electrical tape or rubber bands that shift about while you fit the tyre an tubes on. I agree Power coating is only for Trailer Queens. paint is superior and serviceable.

The problem is the length of the race. If it is long more of the cars are featured in the coverage. Goodwood for us living in Yorkshire is a long and expensive trip. But hope to get there one year. We are going to Cadwell and Snetteron for the 60s races and Donington the following week for the Touring cars. Hope to get to a few VSCC events through out the season too

Two pack paint ( epoxies) has replaced all that powder coating stuff . Bike guys still do it on the frames but I think that's out of tradition. Give it to 'em Ivan.

I might have miss something along the way but has Ivan explained who "Tom" actually is and his back ground in racing?? I know I am interested and other probably would be also. Thankyou all. Just something that I used to do 40 years ago with dirt bikes, I would do away with the rim tape and wrap it with a sticky tape that was 2 inches wide so the spokes wouldn't touch the rubber. Mostly had to redo it at the next change as it would creep from movement of low pressures. A thought from Australia.

As long time Members Meeting attendees, the 'icing on the cake' this year was meeting Ivan on Saturday, after the S F Edge morning practice session. My brother and I interrupted Ivan whilst he was wiping oil from the engine and had a lovely chat about the recent modifications (carb de-icer and rubber oil control gaskets) and then out of the blue, the Capri 'tin top' racer he is building with Tim. I think Ivan's charm is that he'll talk to anyone as if they are a friend and equal if they are as enthusiastic as he is about a subject. In real life he is just like he is in the videos, totally genuine, top bloke. Just a bit jealous from reading other comments that we didn't get a sticker from Suzie.....maybe next time🙂

Yet another great video Suzie and Ivan, I totally agree with you regarding powder coating, my son had a good frame powder coated, once the coating was chipped the damp got behind on to the metal and corrosion soon spread along causing the coating to flake off.

Same as a pushbike, Ivan. It has the flat rubber on the inside of the rim, on the spoke bolts. 😊

We have been powder coating midget chassis in the U.S.A. for over 35 years and never had an issue. All of my vintage racecars are powder coated. The EPA in our country has made painting very expensive with all of their regulations.

May I suggest you try a version of a rust ring .these were used on truck tyres before the tubeless rims become the norm👍👍🇦🇺🦘.shame they don't put a little more time into the rest of the field.

Might the "second hole" have allowed air that's been warmed by the engine block to enter to help colder running, whereas the main inlet would take in increasing amounts of colder air as the machine started to move at speed?

Powder coating works on bare metal…..prime first and it will fail.

The new single carb set-up is an improvement, but I can't help thinking that the multiple pieces and turns are restrictive. Surely a 4-branch manifold in one piece would be better?

totally agree powder coat isnt good on lots of stuff , if you get a pin hole in it it will lift , shame about the tyre but looks good

I had a Harley frame powdercoated and it flaked off wherever I tightened a bolt. I guess it was too smooth for it to grab onto.

Your opinion of powder coat is correct from personal experience. Never again.

You didn't mark the tube levering on the tyre did you?

i used to fit a inner flap to wheels like that it holds the beeds apart stops tube pinching trucks tractors bikes all used to have them

Ive seen tyres on powder coated rims on bikes actually slip round under heavy braking and on a tubeless tyre that means instant flat. Poor prep in both cases. No key no sticky

Powder coating is beloved by MANUFACTURING as it is quick to apply, quick to dry and has alot less over spray. It is not made to last long it is made to increase production speed and be alot cheaper for company. I DON'T LIKE IT BUT YOUR CHANNEL IS GREAT PS I WOULD DEFINITELY CONSIDER BANDING THOSE TIYERS TALK TO THE TT BOYS AS TO WHY OR HOW ELSE TO SORT THE PROBLEM..

That is my main gripe about watching racing they only show the front runners! And I hate powdercoating too! I dont understand the hype about it.
