My grandmother Mary was born in 1900. By the time I was a little kid in the 70s, she was suffering from severe Alzheimer's. She would sit in her chair in our finished basement for hours on end, staring blankly. One day, while I was walking by, she pulled me onto her lap and sang this song to me from beginning to end. The only thought this song brings to mind is that I wish I could have said to her "I love you".

Interesting. I remember hearing this song sung by Michigan J. Frog on the old Warner Bros. cartoon as a kid.

My mother rarely sang. But when I was growing up, she did sing this one, if only the refrain. :) I don't know if it was still popular when she was a girl or if she knew it from my grandmother. Now I'm choked up for two reasons: first, as you play, I can hear my mother singing it; second, now that I know all the lyrics, yes, just as described at the website, it's a tear jerker! Well, thank you so much for the memory. :) And the website! How I discovered it was my searching for a song that mentioned "dolls or dollies." The one I was looking for is from a later era. But what what a nice surprise that it brought this song up! I thought I'd never hear it again. Thanks. :)

💢💢My dad was born in 1905. He and his brothers would sing barbershop harmony when he was younger. In early 1960's I brought Dad, Mom and his brothers to see a barbershop quartet event and was surprised when "the boys" suddenly broke out singing "Won't you come over to my House" during an intermission. The only time I have ever heard that song! The people in the audience spun around to hear the boys. It was beautiful harmony! I searched for it and here we are in 2022! Glad I found it! Sad lyrics... 💢💢

Thank you! Great rendition! The song moves me to tears. The Frog got me chasing Tin Pan Alley tunes. Can't help joking some of the lines are used in 'Creepy' Joe Biden's playbook.

Could it be about a "witch"? Y'know fairytales teach things in a simply way 'cause children are not yet able to understand complicated matters: i.e. don't trust strangers, they could be "witches".

It seems to be mainly about consolation of the little girl. Secondarily it shows a desire by the woman for a surrogate or replacement child. Shows that times have changed. Today that seems creepy. It's good music. I think we've uncovered another classic.
