The ref in the West Ham game was spot on with his decisions. It is quite clear what happened when watching frame by frame stills and studying the movement of Bowen just before the cross came in. The ref is perfectly positioned in clear line of sight. Anel holds a central position and stays (important to note here) in the same spot. Bowen sees him and moves forward towards Anel - the ball is still out wide. Anyone who has played as a striker might question why a 1.75m striker goes to engage directly a 1.90m defender rather than seek to find space in behind - and there was certainly an opportunity to make a run in behind the United central defender and the right back. However, the ref is obviously very close to ending the game, and might it just be that Bowen is intent on a clash? Quite apart from ulterior motive though, Bowen engages Anel and puts his left hand on his shoulder. Anel has his arm out - and indeed he had his arm out before Bowen engaged him, perhaps protecting his space and to block an easy run past him. As the ball is at its highest point Bowen is in no position to go to head it and then places his right hand on the defender's left shoulder. A still-frame shows both hands on Anel's shoulders. Both players are at this point engaged almost in a "shall we dance?" routine. The ref is watching this with clear line of sight as both players go to ground. There is no way that any referee can conclude that was a penalty, though close-up video footage from the other side of the moment the players go to ground certainly gives an impression of there being a foul. They say the camera doesn't lie, but you can certainly use it to tell a story that's someway short of the real truth!! Show less

He seriously had absolutely no chance with 4 of the goals, and two defenders let a 33 year old Danny Welbeck run 50 yards to get to a position from which he’s been scoring goals against great keepers his entire career… if you guys are this unwelcoming to a keeper on his first game, against a club that has only failed to score in two games this season through 2 domestic cup competitions, the premier league and the Europa cup group stage…. I think he’s going to regret moving from Atletico Madrid…

At the game it felt like blades dominated, mainly the first half and the last 15 mins but for the rest brighton had the ball

I was at the game, it just looked like a typical Brighton game, with Brighton pulling the strings from start to finish, they always play out and build from the back, and recycle to the back after a probe attempt, they invite teams to chase them down, it’s risky and occasionally delivers chances to teams, good teams… and bad teams, like Sheffield, and they relaxed a bit before the end of the first half, which is how Sheffield scored, completely against the run of play. When Brighton play like this It causes the other team to be running about constantly and I actually think opposing fans think that means their team has been aggressive and dominant. Especially if the tactic hands out a few chances, Sheffield were never dominant, not at any point… They just weren’t, they huffed for about 5 minutes at the start of the game, and for 5 minutes at the end of the half. Second half Brighton were in total control, especially when they took off most of the kids and popped a few of the usually starters in. Yes sometimes, against a half decent team the Brighton system hands chances that costs them, that was never going to happen against Sheffield United, I mean seriously, you’re fielding a player we dumped years ago, you’re at the bottom of the league, you’ve got a clueless manager who’s already failed miserably at your club. The last 15 minutes that you think you dominated, was basically a 7ft man holding a 4ft kid at arms length, they were playing with you. See… if you really try you can express your personal concept about a 106 minute football game with a bit more detail than a sentence of delusional partisan bullshit.

Proper blades fans like myself acknowledge that we were outplayed barring the opening 10 minutes and a mini collapse from Brighton just before half time. Wilder's comments don't reflect how neutral fans will feel. The penalty decisions were correct. Sheffield fc aren't a professional side by the way. Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday are the only professional clubs in the city
