Todd Gurley was one of the best players in the NFL, but then he disappeared from football. So what really happened?

He was and is one the best RBs to ever play. We should put absolutely zero shade on Todd. Health often is managible, but sometimes things happen to our bodies that we cannot do anything to change. Outside of prayer, faith, science, exercise, rest, and good eating habits the body does wear down and we do have a bell curve to our physical climb, peak, and decline. It's a fact. Todd's bell curve wasn't something he wanted at all. Nobody did, in fact. But sometimes this happens. Plus, lets not lose sight that football is a full contact sport with elite, large, and very strong humans and there is a point in every person that you will break. Living in LA, I loved Todd and I still do. He was a smart, talented, and elite human on the field and NOTHING can ever take that away from him. He still holds records and was one of Georgia's all time, best RBs. TB, #30 was a freak!

Running backs should be one of the highest paid players on the team. They do all the dirty work, take a ton of damage to their bodies, make spectacular athletic plays, and have typically short careers. Without great running backs football would be pretty boring..so pay them!

@@weBeatMedicare Well the 49ers just went there with a running back who gets paid $15 million a year and a qb who only gets $4million. No single player carries a team dude. Running backs who play like CMC and Gurley never last long but while they’re great, they’re worth their weight in gold. They need to get paid like it.

This is why Emmitt smith is the man. His endurance to be good for so long will never be matched again. The record might be broken only because they eventually have 18 regular season games. But Emmitt did it in 16 game seasons meaning he got to 18k yards the longest way

Great overview of his career, thought the pacing from college to draft thru ups & downs with the Rams was really on point. Her speaking style (like how she delivers the lines) always strikes me as really good too. It's sad to think what could've been for Gurley with his level of talent, but at least he got that almost 70m contract to soften the landing....

There were other issues too. His attitude got worse. I remember when the Rams opened the season in 2019, the year after appearing in the Super Bowl, the announcer for the game I was watching listed the Rams captains and Gurley wasn't one of them. He was a captain the previous years so I thought that was strange. A member in a Rams forum I used to read also mentioned Gurley couldn't find his helmet when asked to go in in the second half of the game in Pittsburgh, a game in which he had a great first half and a game we should have won. Things were generally kept quiet but there was a mention of him being a cancer in the locker room. I thought he was awesome and he seemed like a real good dude until after the Super Bowl when things soured. My Rams have a bunch of great running backs in their history and he was one of them.

The NFC Championship game in New Orleans was brutal for Todd, who let a dink pass bounce off his hands into a Saints INT inside the Rams 20 on the teams first possession. He later dropped an easy pass in the red zone that would've been a first down. He did have TD run in the game but did not have a good game, and McVay basically just sat him. Nerves? Knee? Coach? The Rams were never truthful about what was going on with Gurley at the end of 2018 and into 2019 after giving him the huge contract. He had good games against the Panthers, Bears, Steelers, Cardinals & Seahawks 2nd games and Falcons in 2019 but was never consistent and much of that had to do with not getting touches in games. The Tampa Bay game comes to mind where he got 5 carries in a 55-40 loss. He did miss the 1st 49ers game with an undisclosed injury. His release along with Brandin Cooks in early 2020 was a shocker given their recent contracts and prominence in the LA market. Gurley was the face of the Rams from 2016-2019, and they just cut him. The Rams made a habit of signing stars to big extensions and then throwing them away. Gurley (knee?), Cooks (concussions?), Goff (contract/play?), Brockers (contract?) and Woods (knee injury?). The team even tossed Johnny Hekker without a thank you one. Brutal. I've always wondered if Gurley shone too bright for an insecure but wildly successful young coach in LA, and it was always more about ego than injury. Same for Jared Goff. Thanks for the fine segment!

Love your videos! I hope you don't mind if I add something here real quick? Although they did announce it in week 14, it was week 11 versus the Chiefs when he was injured, it was during the first quarter when someone landed on his legs from behind. That's when he was out for at least a couple of quarters and reduced the running game. During their bye-week that's when the Rams get CJ Henderson. He also ended up having a shared workload in week 13. I hope you don't mind me commenting this!
