I’m still a fan of RGIII. His immaturity at times was detrimental to him, plus having Washington drafting Cousins as well was something he was worried about. He saw cousins everyday in practice, knew he could play well, and saw him win games when Robert was out.

Crazy how that’s happened twice with the Washington football franchise?? They drafted a quarterback in the first round who wound up being a bust and the same year drafted another quarterback in the later rounds who ended having a better career mostly as a journeyman. 1994: Heath Shuler/Gus Frerotte 2011: RGIII/Kirk Cousins

A player should never be allowed to dictate when he's ready to go. Of course a driven guy never wants to sit. That's where doctors, coaches and the whole management team comes in. It was their failure, and theirs alone, that destroyed RGIII's career.

Life-long Washington fan here & this is the best video I've ever seen on RG3. I'm not going to lie, I was extremely skeptical before clicking play, but you really did your research. I felt like I was listening to one of our local Sports Reporters who had ears on the ground while this stuff was happening. I'm happy RG3 has found a second career as a Football analyst and Color commentator but as a player, he limited his potential by rushing back from injury and wanting to be "Aaron Rogers" when that's not his skill set. A former teammate of RG3 once said on-air that Teams could take away half the field from RG3 due to his lack of progression skills, this limitation is completely unacceptable at the NFL Level.

Agree. He could spin it. He just got caught up in things like conflict with the Shanahans who really did have his best interests in mind balanced with the team & at the same time it’s like he lost his edge to keep getting better. He thought he had arrived. But in the NFL teams adjust better. Mahomes is a great example of a QB who does whatever it takes to win. Hurts is another QB who grinds & works to be able to do whatever it takes.

The dumbest part of Robert's thinking is that the called QB runs were the plays that made the whole offense work. The option threat specifically froze opposing DE's which mattered because they couldn't block those guys in a normal drop back situation. Second, Robert NEVER took a bad hit on a called run, every bad hit he took was him extending pocket plays and being unable to slide. Robert sabotaged his own career.
@derrickbrown7955

As an RG3 fan I think there is one pretty important detail left out. While I agree, and even RG3 would agree, he should have rested until he was 100% after that first injury. He is at some fault for the later injuries that occurred for sure. I also blame the Skins coaching staff from not saving RG3 from himself. That said, RG3 was doomed after that first season to fail weather he got hurt or not. The thing that made Shanahan a great coach was his ability to understand and capitalize on his teams strengths. He took over the Skins who were not a great team at the time and redefined the game plan focusing on not what was NFL protocol, but what his team could do best no matter how un-NFL like it was. With RG3's speed the read option which at the time was only seen in high school and college made perfect sense. RG3 had 1 weakness in his game, he was terrible at recognizing defenses, but had the talent and speed to mostly overcome that weakness his first season while teams struggled to figure out how to stop the read option. If RG3 stayed healthy, by year 2 defenses had the read option figured out. You can watch film of year 2 vs year 1 and see the adjustments defenses made to defend the read option essentially shutting RG3 down due to his lack of being able to read a defense. So my "what if" scenario if RG3 had not gotten hurt is by year 2 he would either need to learn to read defenses to play a more conventional style of QB which would have kept the read option still viable or, be a career backup. That is what separates RG3 from LJ8. LJ8 is pretty good at reading defenses and the read option is still a very lucrative part of his game.

He won’t give that king treatment to Jayden - who from what I see does not have the same personality as RGIIi (bright but egotistical as all getup) or Haskins (RIP but did not understand the work that needed to be done to succeed). Life long skins fan here, fantastic video! I didn't even know about the college injuries and I followed RG3 very closely during his time in Washington. It is worth noting, the main reason he was so far removed from the starting position in 2015 was because of an injury clause he had in his contract. Him and cousins were nearing the end of their rookie deals and his contract had a MASSIVE bonus if he were to be injured; this was added in after some renegotiations and the team was not willing to risk that much money.
@grahamhorvath4042
@grahamhorvath4042 9 күн бұрын
It is also helpful to note, the team was constantly trying to teach him to protect himself. He was used to running over and through guys and when he got to the league that changed, he was never one to slide, and even when he did he often did it wrong and either hurt himself further or the team. By 2015 the team had little faith in his ability to protect himself from injury and that added to the fear of having to pay extra if he got injured in his last season.

His play style is/ was too niche. Like said, he was, in the beginning, a RPO QB but was suddenly rushed into a pocket passer when he should have been a hybrid. For one thing, RGIII didn't learn how to slide until he went to the Browns, YEARS after taking multiple injuries. Given even just that one fact (among others) - he was never going to have a long career in the NFL.

He is somewhat of an enigma. He obviously had great talent. He needed some time to improve his footwork from the pocket in the West Coast offense. Had he been afforded that, he could have really been a long-term elite QB. Some of that is on him as well. Then the injuries too. Unfortunate situation tbh.

RG3 and Carson are case studies as to why it’s important to focus on health over trying to be the best. The best ability is availability and if you are available to perform your best, then that’s more important than rushing injuries that need time to heal. I remember that 2012 season and I thought RG3 was gonna be my fav quarterback. It’s a shame but he’s matured and he’s grown from it as a person

The great John Madden said " players can play when they're hurt but not when they're injured". Mike Shanahan was experienced enough to know the difference but clearly he his son and Dan Snyder didn't care enough about the wellbeing of RG3 to do the right thing and shut him down for the rest of the season. It was practically criminal negligence, shame on them. Go Hawks

Excellent video and analysis of RG3’s career. I also feel that NFL defenses figured him out just like they did with Kaepernick. Lamar Jackson was actually a pretty good passer in college and played well against NFL caliber competition. RG3 was lighting up cornerbacks like Justin Gilbert in the Big 12. RG3 couldn’t even get his college team to a New Years 6 or BCS bowl, but I guess the Alamo Bowl was like the National Championship for Baylor at the time.

Was at the night game vs Dallas, Was in the upper deck and you could see him limping from his mid-season knee injury while they were in the red zone and we were sitting on the other side of the 50 yard line.

The biggest mistake the team made was not forcing him to recover after the initial knee sprain against the Ravens. The team would have been better off missing the playoffs, giving Kirk an opportunity to get looks from other scouts, and coming back strong in 2013. At the end of the day, it was not poor protection schemes or badly performed deceptions, but RG3's lack of being able to slide was what ruined his knee.

I believe he tore the same ACL twice and it’s pretty well studied that a lot of these elite athletes can recover from one tear, but tearing the same one multiple times drastically reduces the chances they can return to form. So while there are a ton of criticism that are fair about the way he handled things, but the injury absolutely derailed his career

During Griffin's rookie year, he impressed with both his football ability and leadership traits. However, once the team started losing the following season, Griffin's play declined, and Snyder empowered the QB with special treatment, Griffin became less of a teammate. Santana Moss says RGIII later boasted about getting Shanahan fired, for example, and that didn't go over well in the locker room.

A trainer should've asked RG3 do you want to play now of 5-10 years from now. Rushing back from an injury that should've kept him out his entire sophomore season quite possibly ruined him. The same thing happened to Carson Palmer. He wasn't right for 2-3 seasons after his injury.

They really should've shut him down and told him ABSOLUTELY NO after he just BLEW OUT his knee in the Baltimore game. It's a travesty how DC handled his injury. RG3 definitely wanted to NOT run all those QB draws, but clearly, he's not Aaron Rodgers.
