Sheku Kanneh-Mason, the record-breaking 19 year-old British cellist who became a viral sensation after being personally invited by the Duchess of Sussex to perform at Royal Wedding in May 2018. He previously rose to fame as the first black musician to win BBC Young Musician in 2016 and winner of The Times South Bank Breakthrough award 2017. Performing regularly as a soloist and twice at the BAFTA awards, Sheku’s debut album ‘Inspiration’ was released early 2018.
Sheku’s version of Bob Marley’s ‘No Woman, No Cry’ went viral worldwide and he became the first BBC Young Musician winner to enter the Official UK Albums Chart with a debut recording, as well as the youngest cellist ever to reach the Top 20. He is one of this year’s biggest breakthrough artists - across any genre.
Sheku has been on a whirlwind adventure since winning BBC Young Musician 2016 - performing Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ at the BAFTAs in front of Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, playing at 10 Downing Street as part of the 30th anniversary of Black History Month, and making his BBC Proms debut as a soloist with Chineke! - Europe’s first majority BME (black and minority ethnic) orchestra - with the video of his performance going viral. He now studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London.

When one considers that this composition was something like Casals' signature piece, one realizes that it shows a good deal of confidence in one's own playing to decide to post one's own version online. Sheku Kanneh-Mason passes the test on both counts: both in terms of belief in his own playing and, even more importantly, in terms of his ability to achieve a truly beautiful performance. Chapeau!

I don't often show my non Pollyanna side as it doesn't pop up too often. But it did this morning when I thought of all the lost years I didn't have with my grandchildren and how sad and cruel it's been for us all including Alex. So I sent Max this piece of music telling him how sad I feel of the loss of his and their childhood and that I would like to have a 2 hour lunch with him and see what happens...... I told him that Catalonian Pau(Pablo) Casals wrote Song of the Birds at his outrage and sadness the cruelty Franco's dictatorship created. The music conveys all that and also conveys all mine too. Let's see what happens...... The musician is the first black musician to win the UK Young Musician of the Year + he is the eldest of 8 from Nottingham and they all play.

A beautifil composition from Pau Casals. He composed it when he was away from his country ( Catalonia) during Franco dictature in Spain.

The song of the birds (el cant dels ocells) it isn't a composition from Pau Casals, it's a tradicional catalan song that Pau Casals play it everywhere he went, but he make it more beautiful than it is. Pau Casals va ser un exemple per tot el poble català i el portarem al nostre cor tots els violoncelistes i els catalans que han de suportar la repressió de l'estat espanyol.
