Here are TWO of the original Shelby Cobra 427s. You can find street versions and replicas - but these two are the actual competitors circa 1965.

"Change the rear end gears and the car will do 185 mph". The Cobra Daytona Coupe with a little 289 with just under 400 hp hit 197 on the Mulsanne Straight with Bob Bondurant at the wheel! That's how important good aerodynamics is for attaining top speed. You still have to love the 427 for all its bravado and sheer muscle.
@BradThePitts Жыл бұрын
The fastest speed ever recorded in a Cobra roadster is 202mph in Dick Smith's legendary red #198.
@Loulovesspeed Жыл бұрын
@@BradThePitts - Dick Smith's 427 S/C hit 198 top speed at Daytona and that record lasted 40 years until a Superformance replica hit 201. However, that car was not an original Cobra and the 427 FE was opened up to 496 cu. in. and had many internal mods done to put out 690hp, well in excess of any stock Cobra roadster in 1967. The typical top speed with the gears used in road racing for the 427 roadster was 165-170. As with any car, you can put taller gears in to bump that up to 185 or so. The 289 Cobra roadster was not capable of keeping up with the competition at long tracks like Le Mans as its top speed was closer to 150mph. The 250 GTO Ferrari could hit 183! That is the whole reason for Shelby to make a Cobra coupe, as the roadster was about as aerodynamic as a brick. If they had finished the project of putting a 427 in the Coupe, it would have destroyed all the records set by the 427 roadster. However, that never happened.

All I can say is “Holy Cow”! For one person to have procured 2 true Comp 427 Cobras is a phenomenal feat of perseverance and means. From the dialogue I can tell you understand the full responsibility of being the caretaker of American history. Thank you for sharing insights of these two amazing machines.

Great movie, well done. My grandparents lived in Esher, Surrey and we would have to drive thru Thames Ditton and past the AC factory. I would get my dad to stop so that I could look at the Cobras sitting in the window. Wow what a thrill. 45 years later it is still a crowd stopper. Just can't beat that look and when it appeared on the front of Hot Rod mag it was amazing. I try to go to the Glen every year in September for the SVRA meet and fall in love all over again. Thanks.

The Cobra Daytona Coupe went for $7.25 million in August 2009. That's the new record holder. It sold at the 1st Mecum auction held in Monterey, and Bob Boundurant and Peter Brock were both there to watch it sell. I was able to get their autographs! Every car guy needs to be in Monterey during the second week of August. It's the biggest car week in the entire US.

I also wanted one of these jackets as it really looks even better than the Shelby "Team" jacket. Racing Division Los Angeles [RDLA] made only 2 of them according to Mike at RDLA. The "COBRA" letters on the back of the jacket alone were $150.00. I found a "Blank" blue quilted jacket very close to this one and had my own made with my choice of Shelby Cobra patches as well as the "Cobra" embroidered on the back. The cost to me to make my own up was around $250.00, that includes the cost of the jacket, getting the patches sewed on, and having the "COBRA" embroidered on the back.It turned out great I must say

Great video. I like the soft piano music, instead of some raucous rock music, as you might expect. The narration was done very well by the owner... articulate and easy to listen to. I was a bit confused at the beginning when he was talking about 289 Cobras with 260 engines, and the suddenly jumped to '65, but that was a minor problem. Five stars.

I graduated HS in 1966, rarely missed a race at the Glenn. This was my dream car. I figured at around 10k (for a street SC), I could afford one when I graduated college. Well, the best laid plans. When I could afford a 10k auto, these things were up to 100k, now that I could scrape that up, I think they're in the millions, if you can find one. Oh well, love lost.

You can still see replicas race @ Elkhart Lake, WI in vintage races...and they still give me goosebumps. The body is not quite as SEXY as an XK-E, but they're pretty damn close.

Bob Holbert was a neighbor of mine at one point. He said the FIA cars were always faster than the 427 cars. Part of the reason for that was the 427 cars were never fully developed. They came at the end of the company. He always believed that had Shelby continued they could have made the 427 cars faster than the FIA cars.

Anthony has two beautiful cars, both of them are truly fantastic! I still can't get over the CSX 3026 FC red cobra with the Original mag rims. both of the cars shown I bet are worth price-tag wise in excess of $1 000 000, 00. but who cares about the $ and cents value, when you can own a piece of history and drive it too! great video Zillis! I bet you can't wait until the next time you see anthony to go out for a cruise!
@ednorton18535 жыл бұрын
The red one which Im sure you are aware will make over 600 hp vs the medium riser in the blue one making only 500+ even stroked to 450 cid. That is what a huge difference the high riser was to the medium riser. 99% of the people think that because they have a 427 side oiler that they have the good 427. It is a good motor for sure, but they have no idea what a huge difference there is between the 427 street cars that were all medium risers, and the high riser. The high riser was never available in a car you could buy. They were supplied to Shelby obviously, and to factory backed racers only. Even the Thunder bolts were medium risers. The high riser intake manifolds runners were about 5/8 of an inch taller than a medium riser. The intake ports on the heads were a 1/4 larger and a big portion of that amount was from the floor of the port up. Allowing high riser to make huge top end power. That suited the 427 very well due to the over square bore to stroke ratio. The High riser would turn 7800 rpm with the flat tappet cams they came with., as to the medium riser about 6800rpm Its like night and day between the two.

Amazing, thanks for this video and the correct info to go with it. You're keeping history alive. I also love to hear people talk crap about Shelby and the fact that the Cobra was designed around the old British AC Bristol, or formerly the AC Ace. Trust me, those cars are NOT Cobras anymore than the original Land Rover was a Jeep even though it was an aluminum body on essentially a Jeep chasis. The Brits love to claim the Cobra, but it's as American as anything. Awesome cars!

Actually, I watched that one on Mecham. They had a $7M offer--and said no! Wow!! Not bad for a "used race car" that almost got shoved into the North Sea in '66 rather than pay its freight home! Love my Vettes and I loved my CSX6000 but the fact is: one was a stock car that was adapted for racing. The other was a race car that was only offered to the public to qualify for racing classes.

The red car raced in WV...that probably would be Summit Point which opened in 1970. There is a good chance I raced against it. I have a photo of the start of the "Big Bore" National which shows a Cobra on the front. Did it run at Marlboro,MD in 1969? There were several A Production Cobras that ran there in '69. I raced there in every race that year. I had the opportunity to drive a 289 Cobra for a couple of laps at Summit Point in 1970 or '71.

I'm dying in envy. Well done for owning not one, two pieces of art. Shelby Cobras are simply sublime. People get over the kit cars. Like you said, it's a kit. No originality in it. Don't demise the originals, if it wasn't for the originals. No Cobras would exist today. So don't compare imitation with originals.

Thank you Wherever they come from,I respect the great leaps forward in motoring,especially when someone takes a standard roadster & turns it into 1 of the most seductive monsters on road or track I feel Shelby achieved this with Bristol's handsome pre-World War II AC Ace,to produce his Cobra in 1961,as he did with the equally hot 1965 GT-350,based on a Ford Mustang,which was coincidently named after my fav plane,which was itself,a US reinterpretation of a great British bird,the Spitfire 8)

I've got a copy of the original repertory of the cobras, coming from AC cars. CSX 3026 went out of the manufacture the 2.5.1965, with no paint, and black interior. Same, save for the 6000s aluminum body vs fiberglass. Like the ERAs a lot, just lack the time to build. Very faithful. Had to buy a roller & just dropped in an aluminum 454 FE (stroked 427). I wasn't saying anything against the replicas. My argument was people comparing the replicas against the originals. I'm in same boat as you. I'll never own an original. I can only dream about it, thus it is my dream car. Until I hit mid-life crisis, I don't think I will get serious enough to go after a cobra. Chances it will be a replica. But my choice would be between a cobra or a Mustang GT 500. Till than I'll keep on dreaming. Thanks for your honest reply.
